Replacement

1833 Capped Bust quarter I wrote a journal a while back about a 1833 Capped Bust quarter that I purchased. That particular quarter wound up being stolen and was returned to the rightful owner. I had been searching for a replacement and found one about a month ago. PCGS EF-45 To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

LOOKING FOR HELP/GUIDANCE/CRITIQUE WITH REGISTRY SET

Looking to pick your brains! Hello, I am new at the hobby and I created a Custom Registry set in August of 2013 titled THE GLOBAL SILVER COIN COLLECTION and I was hoping to get some guidance, help and critique from the forum users. I strive to eventually receive a registry award and I am looking for pointers on what more I could do to help my set reach that standard. Please go to my profile to view the set listed under CUSTOM SETS. I really appreciate your time and hope you all have fun

I Am Honored

Before I get started, I want to congratulate all the winners of this years awards. That said I also want to thank all those who have congratulated me for the Most Informative Custom Set. Your kind comments mean more to me than you know. I also wish to thank the judges for recognizing my set among the 72,000 other sets in the Collectors Society Registry. The last time I won a major NGC award other than a journal award was a best-presented set award four years ago. At that time, I wrote a post e

Wow! What a year full of education ...

It has been close to a year now that I first became involved in numismatics. I was buying and selling gold and silver bullion prior to becoming intrigued by the coins that I saw being bought and sold on eBay. It was not so much the buying and selling that intrigued me as it was the history involved with these coins. It was not long after discovering this hobby I decided to become involved and it has been a year, or close to it, in which I have bought many coins, both raw and certified, and dab

The fun we had at FUN 2014

You should have been there... As Doug mentioned, we did lose a great friend prior to the show beginning. We shared several toasts in his name during the week and some of us thought of him often. However, with the occasion at hand, we went on with the week's tasks. Oh, what a time we had. Let me sum it up by borrowing from a well know marketing campaign like this: Taking a well-deserved vacation: $1,000 2010 P Lincoln in NGC MS67RD: -$40.00 (+$40 after trade) 2008 D SMS Lin

High end collecting

Finding that most elusive coin. Since I have joined NGC, I have been concentrating on completing a high end Lincoln set. So, I have been purchasing rolls of cents to have graded. All uncs of course! Some, yes the price will choke a horse! But I have been doing okay with them. My best so far was a roll of 1943 cents UNCS. 80.00 but managed a MS-67 and a MS-66. I also sold one for 15.00 and the guy was happy. He bought it through the chat boards. Real nice guy. It could have been 10.00

Online Auction

Question First, before I ask my question, I would like to share a find that I made today. I was making a deposit at work today and I found a $1 Silver Certificate. It has been through the wringer, but a fun find, none the less. So, this has happened to me twice in the past month with two different sellers, both with feedback of 500 or less. I bid on a coin, lose the auction and receive a second chance offer less than an hour later. To me, it seems like the seller or a friend bid up the p

I thought that I was going to feel FREE!

Talk about an addiction. First of all, congrats. To all the society members on their collections. Winning or not. After all, we all have to start somewhere, and without a collector pool. How could there be any great top sets. So, as I say, congrats. To all. Here I am in Jan. I've been collecting Canada pl coins for quite a few years. In Dec. I completed a few sets. My prize sets are the 1953-67 pl dimes and quarters. As well as the 1950-67 pl dollars. Now, the costs to complete these sets ha

He was to meet me at the FUN Show and I found out from his family the night after he was too arrived that he had passed away. I will not mention him by name out of respect for the family and their privacy. I will miss him as he was a mentor and a friend. RIP Sir. The weird adventure of an eBay purchase

It got lost in the mail. O.k.. Here is a quirky story. It all started in early December 2013. I purchased an NGC graded coin on eBay. This coin is not all that rare. Not valuable at all. It is a top graded canada pl nickel from 1973. The coin? A canada 1973 PL-68 nickel. Now. Since I needed it for my collection, I bought it. Purchase price $32.00 plus $15.00 shipping. I know it was close to Christmas, so I didn't expect much for the delivery time. On Jan. 6 I went onto eBay to track it. To

Congratulations Coin928 on your well deserved second consecutive Best Presented Set Award.

Since the Registry Awards started in 2003 NGC has bestowed this prestigious award on only fifty-eight Registry Sets. Coin928 is one of only eight individuals that have been recognized with this high honor on more than one occasion. Look at any of Coin928's Registry Sets and his enthusiasm and dedication to the hobby is readily apparent. All of his sets are fully illustrated and annotated and the photos, and coin descriptions are truly outstanding. Unlike some U.S. Philippine collectors

I wanted to say Congratulations to this years 2013 Registry winners.

Each winning member has a unique way of expressing themselves about their collection. These members seized the opportunity to showcase their talents within the Ngc Registry, and I am certain each one deserved their award. Ngc has grown significantly over the years where these awards honor each member who has provided a truly outstanding collection. Its getting better each year. I enjoy viewing/reading these, for each member has a unique way of expressing themselves in their collection. I hope

The Crazies are at it again

Gold Label Fever Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! As usual, I'm looking closely at a number of coins in the Heritage auction at the FUN show. One of them is an 1870 half dime, PCGS graded MS66, in an "old green holder" and sporting a gold CAC sticker, indicating that CAC thinks it is undergraded. The PCGS price guide (typically a bit on the high side...) says $1975 for this coin in MS66. And for those who believe it is undergraded, they say $4500 in MS67. In

A Rarity

Searching old rolls? Friends as we run through rolls and mint sets looking for the sweet taste of varieties sometimes I am overly surprised. I was on a variety check in the Lincoln variety club and a fellow collector said something about a DDO Kennedy he found. I jumped on the thread and offered my opinion also mentioning that I was searching for DDO's. A week later a dealer sent me a couple nice trip die obverse and a quad die obverse. --- So Cool!!! Here is a shoddy pic of the 1964-D Qu

New Years Day

The Good, the Bad and the YUCK! On New Years Day, my wife, sister and I went down to D.C. and visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History. That is the Good. I got to visit my coin collection. (As a tax payer, I consider myself 1/380,000,000 owner of the collection. ) I always love going down to visit the National Numismatic Collection and I will love it even more in 2015 when the expansion is complete. I was telling my sister about some of the histories behind the coins; the 1933 D

Garys January 2014 Coin of the Month

Garys January Coin of the Month (Volume 3, Number 5) is a NGC MS-64 RB, 1795 Great Britain Halfpenny Conder Token (D&H-23). The Industrial Revolution at the end of the 18th Century dramatically changed the labor market throughout Great Britain. This resulted in an increased need for small copper currency. However, the supply of government issued coins failed to meet the needs of commerce for the newly industrialized British economy. In response, a large number of merchants throughout the B

Interesting lessons learned about selling PF70 coins

Sharing (for what it is worth) for proof coins from 1999 to current In a previous journal I had talked about scaling down in some modern coin types to allow me to have more funds for other coins. The results of my selling spree have been enlightening so I thought I would pass them on- again for what it is worth. Now we are not talking about expensive coins here, mostly in the 15-40 dollar range. My observations are only relevant to coins that fall into this price range so they are not raritie

Displaying my Lincoln Memorial Collection at the January 2014 FUN Show Part 2

FUN Show 2014 Hi everyone. The 2014 FUN Show starts next week here in Florida. It is being held in Orlando and as I mentioned before my 1959-2008 Lincoln Memorial circulation issue registry set will be on display. Just wanted to post a quick picture to show everyone what it is going to look like. There are 124 coins in the set and you are limited to 7 cases. With my cover page info and my coins I was able to have them fit into the 7 cases. This is just 1 of 7. I think it turned out pret

2013 what a great year

I had to buy a much bigger safe Hello Fellow Collectors, Happy New Year... What a bunker year 2013 was for the Fielding mini hoard. thanks to the 21st century special, I was able to have well over 800 coins and medals graded. And for the most part, They came back with what I was expecting. I was a little disappointed with my 2013 mint set. I thought I had a few MS 69 and 70's in that set and the highest graded was some MS68's. But oh well such is life. I said in my teaser that I had to b

California Gold Tokens

Arms of California gold tokens on eBay Howdy: If anyone is interested in California Gold Tokens, specifically Arms of California gold tokens, I have decided to sell a number of duplicates from my collection on eBay. OldWestGold (a well-known eBay seller of pioneer and fractional gold) will be listing about thirty or so pieces over the next few weeks. Might want to take a look. They are in NGC holders and as you may know, NGC will no longer slab these tiny gold pieces, so they are get

A Look Backwards and a Look Forward

2013 has been a very good year for my collection. In 2014, I plan more of the same with the exception that I will have to scale back my new purchases significantly. 2013 has been a phenomenal year of upgrades to my Netherlands eleven-coin Queen Wilhelmina 10 Gulden set. In comparison to other years, 2013 has also been the best year for upgrades since starting this set in 2009. I began 2013 with three coins below my target grade of MS-65 and now there is only one MS-64 left to upgrade. At the e
