I got the" BLUES"

Like alway ---- Searching again!! Friends, I spent part of the week searching 1971 mint sets --- 18 of them and also looking for a variety in 18 Proof Ikes I got in a trade. Well as I thought,43 years after the sale of these Ikes I would not find a variety. One thing I surely got that they could not find on the 1971 proofs 43 years ago is "The Ike Blues". Enjoy, Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Almost complete is not quite the same as complete

Buying my first $4K coin! I never would have considered spending $4K for a single stock or option but I am quickly reaching the point where the cost of one single coin will mean the difference between a complete set or one missing a single coin. Well, through hook or crook, I have managed to obtain all but 8 American Silver Eagles (MS and PF). I can see the finish line in sight and it will only be a matter of time (and money) to add the final coins. It has been great to perform the research

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals

Medals with Presidential provenance... I finished writing my first numismatic book (the name of the book is the same as the title of this journal entry). The book is based on documents from the White House, US Treasury Department, and US Mint in Philadelphia. These documents were part of a working file belonging to a top military aide on President Eisenhower's White House Staff. The file was kept by the military aide. After his death, all his papers was passed to his son. After the son passed,

Obscured Sets & Sets with NO PICS or DESCRIPTIONS???

Those of you with good pics and even better descriptions worked your A-- off getting there... I know!!! BEWARE there are a couple of "rants" below! Greetings Collectors, Well the coins I was waiting on finally arrived today. And with these four additions I am broke, but did finally reach my goal of making it into the top ten of my $10 Liberty/Coronet gold (1838-1906) minted at the New Orleans Mint with this 1854-O small date. I have just two more coins I will be able to trade for and after t

Numisma-Quest Win and then the let down ....

It is not very often, since I moved from Utah and would frequent the Nevada state line and Wendover, NV. for a little excursion gambling, that I find myself in the position of actually winning something. However, I overcame the odds somehow and actually knew the answer to the weekly Numisma-Quest trivia question a week or so ago. As is known by all that participate - knowing the answer is just part of the challenge as you have to be picked randomly as well. I felt confident that I had answe

Long Term Goal Reached

IMPORTANT NEWP Well, I have always wanted to write a Journal Entry. I promised myself that, SOMEDAY, when I got to a certain numismatic milestone that it would happen, since I wanted to write a proper and appropriate one, after all. As it so happens, TODAY is that day and I have FINALLY reached that momentous point! I joined the NGC Registry here back in 2005 and I then made an attempt to buy some Early Walkers for my set. I bought the 1917 PCGS MS 64, 1918 NGC MS 64, 1918-D PCGS MS 63,

Recent upgrades

Mercury and Barber dimes At all of the bigger shows (ANA, FUN, etc.), Mark Saltzberg does collectors a service by giving his opinion on coins free-of-charge. Never pass up the chance to have him look at coins I think have a chance at upgrade. An almost sure thing for 68FB in my mind was a 1935 Mercury I'd bought in a third-world slab. Sure enough, Mark saw 68*FB in it. Image attached. At FUN a few weeks ago, I got a surprise when 67+FB came out of nowhere on a '40S Mercury. Image attached. An

Clarification on wait times for grading

How long is it really if the estimated wait time changes while your coins were "Scheduled for Grading"? OK...I submitted some coins at the FUN show in Orlando and they have been scheduled for grading for quite some time, which was expected since the estimated time for Economy service was 28 days when these were submitted. This week, I noticed now that the estimated time for Economy is now up to 35 days (probably with the Silver Eagles coming out creating a boatload of submissions). While the

Blessings and Windfalls from Recent Roosevelt Dime Submissions

What's happening all. Cold enough for ya? I just wanted to post a quick journal about a few NGC submission blessings and windfalls that have been recently returned. Please note that these are just the winners. There were plenty of boners in the bunch. Coin: 1946-S 10C ~ MS 67 FT (Cert# 208212-027) Service: Designation Review This dime was graded MS 67 and encased in the 7th generation of NGC slabs; before the company began FT designation. However, all of the vertical and band lines on th

Did you know.

I love trivia. FYI: Five-cent coins minted from 1942 to 1945 did not contain any nickel. A special wartime alloy was used consisting of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% maganese. And I thought only the penny was different due to the war. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Little Latin American Rarity

Rare and maybe the finest. My newest and lovely Latin American Beauty! Guatemala 1829-NG M Real, KM75. One of the classic rarities of Latin American, a rare one-year type, provisional issue as the State of Guatemala. The SCWC reports only 4 known, but realistically about 12-15 exist. I have traced most of them and the majority are in low grade and/or damaged. The few that are nice and two that are numerically graded by NGC in the same grade I find to be in lower grade than this example. Even

ADOPTION CENTRAL WAS OPEN TODAY.

This Morgan has only one better, the MS67 and there is only one. The Beautiful Morgan Silver Dollar Minted from 1878 - 1921. I opened my door here at my home (and my wallet in this case) and in came a fantastic addition to my family. A 1921 S MS66 Morgan Silver Dollar. Lady Liberty on the obverse, and the Eagle holding arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. 90% Silver, 10% copper. Total weight 26.73 grams. The beautiful coin is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who de

The satisfaction of completing a registry set!

Will the pleasure be followed by pain? This is my first post. Yesterday I purchased a coin to fill the last slot in my presidential dollar error set. What I felt was unexpected satisfaction of proving my brother wrong. He said I should be happy to add a few error coins each year. I had also felt I would never fill all the slots. I've enjoyed receiving the awards for best set. Now I guess I will attempt to upgrade a few of my slots to higher grades if affordable. I hope all of you will comp

My First US Silver Dollar!

Although I bid on many world lots, the first win of the year was an 1846-O Seated Liberty $1 Happy New Year fellow collectors! I started my New Year by participating in several of the big world coin auctions held in January, but failed to win lots, including any of the 8 reales from Guatemala that our esteemed NGC registry colleague, Isaac Rudman, offered in the Heritage World & Ancient Coins Auction in New York. So my first win of the year was a US coin from the Orlando FUN auction.

IN WITH THE OLD: PART III

Adoption central has been busy. I have set my sights on rarity not just numbers of graded coins as I have been accumulating anything I could afford and acquire with little focus. Now, for the past months I have been trading up. I have gleaned out of my collection coins which I included as I sought after PF70s for my 10 Collections of the IMPRESSIONS OF LIBERTY. I have been able to put together 10 complete sets of the 5000 minted and all in PF70. In so doing, I also had many 69s returned fro

Photo's & Info on Four Modern "MUST HAVE" Coins...

There are others but these are four pictured below that won't break the bank...If purchased one at the time. Greetings Collectors, I've been doing a lot of talking about the waste of many modern pieces. But with all due respect there are a few on the flip-side that for the average collector these ARE as I said, MUST HAVE PIECES that will not destroy one's pocketbook. Any reverse proof coin in silver or gold, and if the funds are available, the Reverse Proof $50 Gold Buffalo which by the wa

TIPS, Regardless if you're a Collector or an Investor...

One should ALWAYS remember a couple of things...Which are oh so important tips! Greetings Collectors, First of all I wanted to say that my greeting in my journal posts should be addressed to collectors, rather than collectors & investors for the simple reason that this is the NGC Collectors Society and not the NGC Investors Society. I had quite a few emails concerning my last post and while I answered several, I felt it better to address the many questions and comments here rather tha

I am at it again!!!

Anybody out there got a group of mint sets or proof sets they want to trade off Friends, I am getting a little bored as my usual routine in extra time involves searching coins. I checked everywhere here and seems I have searched all the rolls and mint sets I had. If anyone has a bag, box, or group of U S Mint rolls or mint sets sitting around I would be happy to do a swell trade for them. I am always calmed when I sit in front of a large group of beat up coins looking for a nice one. It su

Auction House

I finally decided to use a different option to sell these sets. Friends, I sent in quite a few submissions last year. Of course there are great coins and then plenty of lower grades when you submit them. I added to my sets as I got my returns and then added to the sets here on this page as well. With 2013 over and still so many coins left on this page I decided to try a auction house and see where I end up in value percentage in sales. I was waiting for some coin sales last year to be able

1968-S JEFFERSON, MS64-FS Business Strike

* Full Step Rarity * If you know this date you will understand the importance of a full step coin for the 1968-S Jefferson nickel. In this year they are super scarce in any grade with fullsteps and is considered rare among the rare. With this coin showing stunningly clean steps it is not far from being the first 6 step coin for this date and mint. It was much easier on my pocketbook purchasing it at this grade for the value on these skyrockets as the grade gets higher. Currently on Ebay

This is ridiculous. Verify a certification # with a more security?

This is totally retarded ! Of course, due to heightened security at NGC all collectors are now required to type in an analog number and also another set of numbers to verify what the coin is on the holder when you go to verify NGC certification.. I really cant see why in the world you really need this.. OH by the way, that second small box, you cant the numbers because the numbers are too dark sometimes. This is becoming a pain. Next NGC will be slabbing a slab. This way you really know its re
