A continuation of my journal entry from 11/4...
Yes, this is a continuation of my journal from a few days ago. The impetus for this entry was an editorial (I think) that I read a couple of years ago. The writer made the point there is just too many Canadian coins being produced and that the RCM should have to cut back.
My feelings on the editorial are simple. Why would anyone complain about our great hobby, especially to complain there is too much of something. My point here is, unl
In with the new out with the old.
Well, seems I can't stop trading, buying selling and so on. Last week, as you know I got the WTC coin and am still talking to the new Freedom Tower and the Museum regarding displaying in New York.
But yesterday, a new adoptee arrived at our nursery, an 1883 CC $20 Gold Piece Pop 59 in MS61.
Seems someone sold their entire collection and a friend of mine was on to it just in time before a dealer got it. I'm not sure what else was in it, glad to glean
Finances are improving and my personal do's and don'ts
Hello everyone,
I know it has been a long time since I've posted a journal entry. But to be honest, I've been using the time to do many things; the best of them is I'm close (a year at most) to being back in the hobby.
First of all, my finances are improving! The last thing I have to do is find a good part-time job to help with my bills. As soon as I'm ahead of the game, with money enough to pay a month or two ahead,
Not to happy with the Quality
I have been able to review 50 sets of the 50th Anniversary Kennedy 2014 Half-Dollar Silver Coin. Now these sets were not all mine. The set belonged to friends and family. This is what I found after reviewing 200 coins. I recommend that 30 sets be returned to the Mint for a refund. These coins lacked quality that one would expect from the Mint. One Mint produced great looking coins. Many of these coins would grade 70. So lets take look. The best coin in the collec
I made a purchase at the Baltimore show.
As I mentioned last time, a dealer was going to bring a coin to the Baltimore show for me to examine. So after putting in a few hours of work Thursday morning, I headed off to the show. I saw the coin, an 1838-O half dime, and liked it. I did not buy it immediately, since I wanted to do my usual scan of the whole bourse first. I did not find anything better for my collection, and proceeded to seal the deal.
The coin is housed in an NGC holde
But I did get a couple...
Part 2 of the Gardner collection sale was conducted Monday by Heritage. A couple posts ago (going back to late June) I mentioned that I would pursue one of the half dimes. I decided that now is the time to spend some money on top quality coins to add to my set, so I got my wife's approval to spend way more (at one time) than I previously have.
The target was the 1846, PCGS graded MS62, and sporting a Gold CAC sticker. Mr. Gardner also had one of the two M

Another BLINDING task
Friends,
I recently acquired around $2500 in mint rolls of coins from Jackson. Quite a few rolls and plenty of searching. The great point in this search is the dates were mostly 2005 to 2010.
With the Sacs, Presidents, Kennedy halves, and State Quarters completed I am down to Nickels and Lincolns. There will be some nice business strikes added to my sets this winter for sure!! With the coins I acquired over the past 2 years added to the new lot I should have

I just bought a new Belgian Congo Pattern that is interesting. It is a 1944 1 Franc similar to KM 26, but struck in steel. It is the same design and metallic content to another steel pattern that I have, but this piece has the "PATT" punch above the elephant, while the other steel example has no letters punched over the elephant. Both the copper and brass examples have the "PATT" punch as well. I am not sure if the coin without the punched letters was intentional or just g
When a details coin looks better
The leeuwendaalder aka lion daalder was first minted in the province of Holland in 1575 during the revolt against Spanish rule. By 1581 the seven Northern provinces were able to gain their independence, forming the Dutch Republic, formally recognized by the Spanish Empire in 1648. Freed from the burden of supporting a monarchy, the Dutch became a trading powerhouse, developing a globe-spanning colonial empire and the largest merchant fleet in the 17th century
My most recent acquisition is worth the wait. Especially sweet is that I could of bought a nice example of this same coin at any time during the last eight or nine months.
I have an interest in collecting the entire series of 1870 Spanish Provisional Government coins. The copper coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 Centimos. The silver coins come in denominations of 50 Centimos, 1, 2, and 5 Pesetas. There is also a gold 100 pesetas that is very rare. Needless to say I probably wont b
added a couple more coins to my Modern Comm Set
Hi everybody,
It's been almost a year since my last post and last purchase...but I have visited regularly to keep up on the conversations and posts.
I recently got back into the game and made a couple purchases to add to my modern commemorative collection. The first is the MS Baseball Hall of Fame. I am a big baseball fan I think the Mint did a great job with this coin. Both the obverse and reverse along with the curved feat
US Mint series uncovered after over 5 decades of being hidden...
I've been receiving many emails relating to family numismatic heirlooms as it relates to President Eisenhower appreciation medals. This is the most recent.

At the Bank
Hello Collectors
This morning I made a trip to my Credit Union to pick up some cash for a little walking money for the wife and I. As the clerk was count out the cash I notice a stack of kennedy halves in the tray so I ask if I could get them well they was $9.00 as she was counting the out I heard that sound of silver so I got them finishing up a returned to the truck to take a better look at what I got low and behold $6.50 were silver $4.00 64 and the rest between 65-69 need
Special coin for a special Nation
This addition to my collection has a special place, not only in my collection, but in my heart. I had owned one of these before, not as rare and valuable as this one, but still most important.
The first one was similar, but an MS69 and the significance was not lost because of it not being a perfect 70.
This coin, in my opinion signifies the great loss, sorrow, pain and suffering, which coalesced a fragmented country into one again when t
A beautiful coin in my collection.

The Royal Hawaiian Mint (RHM) is commemorating its 40th anniversary by emptying its vaults.
I first reported their sale of past issues (i.e. hoard dispersal) on September 12, 2014 at my website. These are originally struck issues and not re-strikes. On September 16, 2014, Coin World reported the 40th anniversary of the RHM and the availability of related commemorative issues. Coin World's write-up did not mention the sale of past issues.
Many of the RHM issues are available for N
I would be really impressed if it's included in the book's update!
I've initiated discussion (at a So Called Dollar (SCD) discussion website) about the inclusion of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals in the update to the Hibler-Kappen book.
No previous references or documentation has been available on this entire medal series. I performed research on the Eisenhower appreciation medals and documented my research findings in a book that was released back in February 2014.
A Matching Pair of Top Pops!
Only 11 Alaska-Hawaii uniface pairs were struck...
This is the only pair encapsulated and graded by NGC.
Both were originally part of the Harold E. Hibler collection (author of the reference book: So-Called Dollars by Harold E. Hibler and Charles V. Kappen). Sold as part of the Ostheimer Collection back in January 2011.
The Alaska uniface is the plate coin in the Hibler-Kappen 2nd edition book.
Both are great additions t
Hopefully this should ERUPT with a search ...
I've been reviewing my previous blog entries at my own website (not here to promote it) and would like to engage the members here to search or locate a possible non-existent So Called 50 Cent (SC50C) variety.
Back in March 2013, I documented the existence of a low volcano and high volcano variety for the 1959 Silver SC50C Hawaii Statehood Heraldic Art Medal at my website.
I'm in search of a specimen to disprove a theory. I'm l

All I want is some Peace...
All I want is some Peace Dollars and some Morgans. I have just returned from a 6 week 8000+ mile tour of most of the eastern states, including upper Michigan looking for treasure. I found a few things, but nothing on my list.
Six raw Morgan and two Peace Dollars which will, for sure bring more than I invested and one is a 1921 S.
I am seeing more and more shops buying gold and silver, but not selling it. The metals keep falling and falling and those win

These 2 recent additions were both recently certified by CAC and I added them too my collection. Sorry about the picture quality. Using my phone camera until they are sent off too be photographed. The scratches are on the holders. NGC MS67RD 1941 D and NGC MS67RD 1955 S Lincoln Wheat Ear cents CAC certified. I have had some success so far with coins sent into CAC and a few others I bought and added to my collection. Might have 1 more submission too go in by the end of the ye
