NGC Journals

A True Journal Entry

... and not an arbitrary thought (or about American Silver Eagles). I have been a member of NGC's registry for about six months now, but I have yet to publish a journal entry. Since I enjoy reading everyone else's entries, I thought I would upload one of my own. The journals I enjoy the most are always about a recent addition of a rare (classic) coin. So, keeping with my interest, this entry will be about a recent acquisition and a few thoughts about our great "hobby" (I put "hobby" in quotati

Have any of you considered collecting ancient coins??

I was hoping to convince you to consider collecting ancient coins, but after reading what I wrote I missed the boat on that goal but here it is anyway. I have been collecting coins for 59 years and have totally embraced the hobby. For many years I collected only US until I simply got sick and tired when looking over any one of my sets and seeing numerous coins that all looked identical differing only by a mint mark or a change in the numbers forming the date. Was I collecting coins or dates

First Gold

I've only collected silver, mostly 8 reales, until this one. Now, you might expect an 8 reales collector to acquire a Spanish escudo as their first gold coin, but I've been wary of buying into the current gold bubble. I hope to acquire a few nice 8 escudos when, and if, the price of gold drops back to lower levels. As a fun distraction from my 8 reales focus, I've been building a theme set of coins that depict the sport of fencing, my other main hobby. Since the beginning of the year I'

The Elusive 1955 Jefferson in Quality Condition-

I had to go back and check this coin again, thinking that perhaps my eyes were playing tricks with me,but there it was! This Jefferson caught my eye,a very nice find! In 1955 most all Philadelphia minted Jeffersons were poorly made, showing alot of nicks and roughness. This coin is a condition rarity in MS66 and above. Having spent a great deal of time trying to locate one with nice fullsteps with no success, I decided it would be best searching these that show rare eye appeal, for 1955

HAVE YOU EVER?

NAUGHTY OR NICE! Has anyone ever bought a MS70 or PF70 "slabbed" coin from one of the other two not so popular grading services, because you got it really cheap, and broken it out of its holder and sent it to NGC in the hopes of getting a MS or PF 70 out of it? Will anyone ever admit to doing that? I wonder. I just thought I would put it out there for conversation. Have a great one everybody, and thanks for listening. Trime Time

Cool coin added in the summer Recently added the 1862/1 3 cent silver variety to my Somerville Set. Three Cent Silvers are a great 19th century set to collect as they were only produced from 1851 to 1873. The set features 3 Varieties, "1851-53, No outline to Star", "1854-58 Three Outlines to Star", and "1859-73 Two outlines to Star". The only mintmark in the series is the 1851-O. and the referenced coin in this post the only major variety for the series. What's interesting about this coin is t

APPRECIATION BREAK!!!

A Pause To Cure My Acquisition Fever. Stop And Appreciate The Roses In My Numismatic Garden. From time to time, I find myself buying coins; viewing them briefly; placing them in the safe deposit box; and immediately searching for the next purchase. The search and acquisition becomes more important than the coin itself. Recently, I have begun to recognize signs of this behavior coming on with me, again. So, I go into a forced slow-down mode:-I search for coins as usual.-Write out a list of all th

2013 P MS67 NGC Jefferson Nickel Reverse Die Clash

It came back just as I predicted as MS67. Sometimes you get lucky and find a MS67 6FS nickel. But you have an angel with you when you can find it with a Die Clash. This is the same one I posted a couple of weeks ago. I first stated it was a Struck Thru but a member corrected me that it was a Die Clash. I even knew that but forgot the term... anyways.. I didn't bother sending it as a Mint Error since it was not enough of it. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here

Slowly getting there on my 32-64 quarter set

Slowly but surely! As I mentioned in a previous post my main focus is to work on completing my 32-64 quarter set by getting the harder dates first at an affordable grade/ price and everything else in MS66. The complete set is 85 coins including the 50 D/S and S/D varieties, I have 67 so far. This is not a small feat to accomplish while working within a discretionary income only budget. I recently won an NGC MS65 1938-S from Heritage for $120 ($141 with Buyer premium). I share the price as par

West Point SAE Set....Very Disappointed with NGC!!

Slabs are horrible! Hi, I just received my West Point Eagle Set from MCM and I have to say that the encapsulation of these two coins is absolutely horrible and sub-standard from what I have come to expect from NGC. From the photo I have attached, you can see all the smudge marks that are located on the INSIDE of the holder on the clear plastic. What the photo does not show is the smudge marks on the retro black. The whole mess was quite visible as soon it was in my hand and stands out qui

Winning at the NGC Crack-Out Game

1922 Gold $1 Grant Star Coin upgraded to MS 66! Back in 2010 I acquired at auction a Grant Star $1 Gold coin graded MS 65 (286937-004) in a old no-line fat NGC holder. Under magnification the coin looked better than a MS 65 to me. While only a little over 5,000 1922 Grant Star Gold dollars were minted, today an MS 65 is an average grade with a wholesale value around $2,000 and worth about 2,732 points. Selling the coin was an option, but I would likely lose money after the fees. Submitting

Re:Working on my CLAD DIMES and MINT SETS

To fully grasp this post, please read the recent thread posted by Six Mile Rick The following is only my opinion to two points MV has made. One, that third party graders have done harm to the hobby, and two that he enters this discussion as a dealer making his living through a brick and mortar coin shop. First, I do not begrudge a person who makes a living by selling coins to profit from them. Second, I have been a collector for more than 40 years and have witnessed the evolution of the market

Working on my CLAD DIMES and Mint Sets

Slowly adding and raising the rank. Friends, As you know I send in submissions to add to my mint sets for 1970 to date. The dimes have been a challenge as it is sometimes very hard to tell that a Roosevelt is borderline FT and won't make the label. Another tough one is the nickel that looks to be full steps but also falls short of it's label. I will be sending in a group of both next month for dates 1980 to date and have high hopes for those. As I get better I send in less coins and have be

Coin and Currency Arbitrage

The banks suck and the stock market is a joke for an unconnected investor.   Coins look like a safe place to invest. I have a long history with coins so I decided to take a spin with coins and estate auctions with coins. For the last three months I have been buying coins at auctions. Not all auctions are the same. There are so many there has to be some bargains out there. So armed with my trusty, redbook,US Coins,Numismedia, etc. The job is daunting with so many auctions. I choose the auctions v

Hall of Fame 2014 U.S. Mint Program

Maybe I'll play a little hardball with the registry Good article in this weeks Numismatic News that went into detail on the scheduled 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin program. The program will have 3 designs , $1 silver, clad half-dollar and $5 Gold. I buy/collect but 1 modern coin issue, the $5 Gold Commemoratives in Unc. so I will definitely be watching for this release. Last time a baseball related $5 commemorative was released was in 1997 for Jackie Robinson and the UNC $5 was

Closing in on the Obscure One - GSA Soft Pack Addition

1892-P GSA Soft Pack Added to My Collection Today I added an 1892-P Morgan Silver Dollar in the GSA soft pack to my collection that is ranked number two. There are only 2 graded in the soft pack, so this is a rare one indeed. This coin is also the highest graded coin for this date in the GSA soft pack. I am closing in on the number one graded set, which I refer to as the Obscure One. Why? Because his set is OBSCURED from my and everyone's view. Who owns the other graded coin? Does the

Rainbow 1951-S Washington Quarter

NGC 1951-S MS 67 STAR (*) Rainbow Washington Quarter I realize the 2013 W American Eagle Set is all the rage in the Coin World right now. I'm fine with that. Since there were more than 250,000 sets manufactured there will always be the option to acquire a perfect NGC 70 set in the future at a better price than today. What I like to find is quality nicely toned Pre-1965 U.S. coins. The are a number of such quality coins out there and they come up for sale in a variety of locations. I prefer
