Strange Looking 1964 (P) Kennedy Half Dollar

Blind Eagle and Almost no E PLURIBUS UNUM - Is it worth anything more than the price of Silver? Bought a bunch of 1964 P&D Mint Sets cheap and was looking through the coins for the usual Full Torch (FT) Dimes or Jefferson Nickels with actual steps. I always find a few worth submitting to NGC to make my money back. Anyway I was looking through the Kennedy Half Dollars and found a very odd looking Philadelphia minted coin. This 1964 (P) Kennedy Half Dollar looks awful, but it is still in t

completed a goal for 2013

Its been an up and down year but it's looking up Greeting fellow collectors, Today I met a goal I've been striving for a couple years now. I surpassed the 200000 registry points today with a 1981 mint set. This puts me in the 408th spot in the registry. Now with the coins I have left out to have graded this year I should be able to break into the 300rds by the first of fall. Well I hope every one is in great health and enjoying the last few weeks of summer I know I am. happy collect

Collecting Memorial Lincoln Toners

The best thrill I've had collecting 1959 to date Lincoln's... was opening a ratty, old hand-wrapped paper roll of 1963 BU cents and finding gem after gem all with deep shades of brown, blue, orange, or sea-green. I started out as a kid saving shiny red pennies and trying to get every date and mm of the memorial series, but recently my goals have shifted. The toners are more interesting to me these days, and I am trying to make a complete 1959-1982 set with as many toners as I can find from sea

Starting out

Looks like I have decided to start collecting certified coins. I have been a collector of world coins for over 10 years now. Most of my coins in the past have been purchased through large lots or from friends as they travel the world. I starting looking for a place to catalog all of my coins online due to the fear that I would loose my inventory on my computer. When I started looking around I can across the Collectors Society. I liked the fact that I could post pictures along with all of the p

A new journey.

It has a slow beginning. Hi CS friends. I want to tell you about a new, but similar, journey that I have started. So far it has a slow beginning but it will pick up as, like Doug, I am getting close to completing my Lincoln set (Only 25 coins to go). Like I said, this is a similar quest but one of much broader scope that so far only a few (18 individuals I think) are signed up for. This task was much inspired by Bob Baker, owner of the Robert Baker Trust sets of coins. As I have been get

Remember a while back about my mammoth deal?

Here is the first one... This is the first coin paid off and received from the Luksic set of Lincoln 59-date coins. If they all look like this one (and I have been told they do) what a set of nice looking coins I will be receiving. As you may or may not remember David agreed to my purchase of 22 of his NGC top pop Lincolns. I will receive two more from his set this year. They should be here in November. I hope you enjoy another Lincoln out of my set. Thanks for reading and for all of

An Astronomer's First Star

Here's the Reverse. In response to a request on the chat boards (from johnny9434), here is a picture of the reverse of the half dime whose obverse was shown in my previous post. The reverse also has pretty dramatic clash marks. In particular, parts of most letters of the obverse legend are visible around the reverse edge. The planchet also had curved marks that did not strike out completely. They appear to have the same curvature as a half dime, but who knows how they got there. There is

Garys August Coin of the Month

Garys Coin of Month article for August 2013 (Volume 2 Number 12) features an NGC AU-53 Spanish provisional government 1870(74) DEM, 2 Peseta. Divided into two parts, this article will examine the link between the 1870(74) 2 Peseta and Hadrian's empire some 1,700 years earlier. Part 2 will be more focused on the technical aspects of the 2 Peseta coin and its historical context following the ouster of Queen Isabella II from the Spanish throne. The use of persons on coins to represent a place or

Why different cut off dates?

PCGS & NGC different cut off dates on first strike & early release for the same set? I Bought some 2013 west point silver eagle sets on the first hour they went on sale,We all know how that worked out!(or do we?) Anyway,I received mine on the 24th,the original cut off date for NGC for Early release, figuring i can still send them in the original sealed box.As it turns out NGC extended the cut off date to 8-16-13,(not sure thats a good thing)?! The Dime Factory

A new name for my sets suggested by a friend in the chats. Hey Friends, As I have been on a roll lately in the Roosevelt dimes My buddy William tried to talk me into getting a web page started. He even went as far as grabbing the name to insure it was available. Well I told him I have never dealt outside the club and like the security of keeping it that way but really liked the name so I changed the set names on my pages. "Dime Factory" now has 50% complete and added many pics yesterday sin

Discipline

For once I held back. I've been writing for some time now that I really need to slow down with the coin buying. (Last year, we made some major renovations to the exterior of our house, and I want to pay off the new debt by the end of 2014.) But up to and including the latest Baltimore show, I've been spending quite a bit on the half dime set. The current Heritage auction included (in a Thursday session) about a dozen nice half dimes that I would normally consider pursuing. I put in low bids

Getting a Bit Frustrated..........

Why can't I get a coin I like in the Retro Holder?! First off, I love the NGC black Retro Holder, and was quite sad when they introduced it for the limited time last year because none of the coins I collect were eligible for encapsulation in that holder. Now, this year, they offer it again for the 2013 West Point Eagle set, and even then only in bulk submissions. Though I don't collect silver eagles, I can imagine those collectors who can't submit in bulk experienced similar frustration. No

A Promise Kept .. R.I.P Todd Richard Peters !..You are now Number 1 !

Gone, but not Forgotten Nov. 8, 1960 - Nov. 20, 2012On 11-24-2012 I wrote a NGC journal about a great friend I never met. I really took it hard when I learned about his passing. He was one of those people that you call a friend, but never met. Hours of talking on the phone about coins and stories about life and family. I miss talking to my friend !!!!I made a promise to myself and everyone in here that I will put his birth year set to #1, which was the 1960 Mint set.I sat on the computer for ho

BIG RISK????

TAKING THE PLUNGE TOGETHER. Well, my fellow members I took the chance that I hope will pan out. My wife and I decided to go all in and order the Reverse Proof Buffalo. I said we could cancel between now and shipping time or return it when we get it if not pleased. This is a very big step for us, as we are getting up in life and retirement is upon us, so not sure if this will pay off in the next few yrs. What do you think Members? Was it wise or stupid, I know wise if we come out ahead an

A rare event today

I finally completed a set! Finished off my SMS 21st Century Type set today. Also, I am down to two slots on the business strike set in the same category. On a sad note, the last of my morgans are up on ebay. It's difficult to imagine life without morgans, but full steam ahead! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Follow up to an issue with a slab....NGC's OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Thank you very much to Max Spiegel and NGC. A few days ago a posted a journal entry here about a West Point SAE in a retro-black holder that had all kinds problems inside the holder. I contacted Max Spiegel at NGC and he asked to me to send in the coins so he can have a look at them and see what the problem was. The coins were delivered on Saturday and today...Monday...I received a call from Max. He said that there was a problem with the holder for the reverse proof and that both coins will

need your expert help

SMS VS MINT SETS Hello my fellow collectors, I need you help please. From 2007 thru 2010 the US Mint made SMS mint sets along with regular mint sets. I can not tell the difference between the 2 there is nothing on the sets telling you if it's SMS or a regular mint set. so how is one to tell the difference. Thank you in advance for your help. Happy Collecting and my God Bless....Mike To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Who else would like to see an expanded return of the black Retro Holder?

Just a little thought that I've had recently....... I've been thinking about this recently. I have so many coins that would just look wonderful in that black core Retro holder......it's just a shame that they only offered it for a few US Moderns for such a limited time. This is the first journal I've written on here, and it might be the last but I thought I'd take the temperature of the community on this issue. My ideal situation would be one where submitters could choose between a black or
