1884-S versus 1899 Morgan

3.000.000 versus 300.000 I do not understand why a coin with a mintage of 3 million plus is valued higher than a coin with a mintage of 3 hundred and thirty thousand. When you think about it even a 1921 MS 65 Peace Dollar is worth almost $2000 more than a 1899 Morgan in the same grade eventhough there were 700.000 more Peace Dollars minted in 1921 than Morgans in 1899 in Philadelphia. I must say that coin values can truly be a difficult thing to grasp.

Any bets on the mint's timetable for 2008 Silver Eagles?

The question you have to ask yourself is this...Do you feel LUCKY? Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering if the Mint is going to meet NGC timetable for "Early Release" designation of 2008 Proof Silver American Eagles? I have them on a subscription program, yet they haven't shown any signs of shipping yet, and the clock on the window at NGC is ticking! I am thinking back to 2006, late in the year when the Mint decided to release Mint State Silver Eagles directly to collectors, with t

Thanks, Michael!

This post is a few days overdue. I wanted to thank Michael for the trivia challenge and for the Barr note! It arrived in my mail box saturday. (To tell you the truth, I never knew what a "Barr note" was, just that it was supposed to be kinda special. Currency has never been my specialty.)

Panda Mania!

Submission back from NGC and in the den. ..I have found this series to be a fun one to collect, but it hasn't been producing the Top grades that others provide. When I look at other dens and on EBay top grades are short in the early years but get better in the latter years. ..The one I have pictured today is one of twenty-five thousand worldwide.

Jackson's Jammin'

Three Cheers for Jackson and His Buddy I have to admit it, I love Jackson's contributionts to the journal. I think he should get the 2007 contribution award as well as the 2006 already purveyed. His articles are fun to read. Who else here is known for their specific collecting focus (sailing ships) that Jackson is? It's also really great to hear about David Bowers and his real life quality. As Jackson wrote there ius only a moderate (OK I admit, as well, a lot) amount of snobbery in the c

Q David Bowers.... There are certain names in our hobby that will always draw a certain respect/admiration...Eliasburg--Reiver--and David Bowers is among those. Today I received in the mail a free copy of Q David Bowers latest book on Lincoln Cents--along with a nice personalized inscription and signature. The reason he sent this to me was because in the last issue of The Numismatic Sun's trivia question section there was a wrong answer. I happened to catch it and sent a polite email asking

SMS and Business Strikes

I submit a lot of my own coins and this is what I have discovered. I look through about 1 to 2 thousand coins to find my Business Strike submissions. I can dismiss about 3/4 of the coins within a second of looking at them. The remaining coins are mostly ms64 with a few ms65's mixed in. When I come across, what I consider to be, a ms66 or better I put them aside. Out of $1000 worth of quarters I am lucky to find a roll of coins to put aside. Since 2005 I have been able to look through 10 or 2

10th Anniversary Platinum Eagles

The US Mint probably thought they were doing a good thing... I have a much different story than Robert did, even though my FedEx brought my Platinum Eagles from the Mint early as well. I believe my coins arrived on XMAS Eve with a ring and a knock from the FedEx driver. I was expecting a number of things from the mint that would require a signature, and they weren't supposed to be shipping the Platinum Eagles until the end of the year, so I innocently OPENED the package. Much to my dismay,

A lustrous original Silver tone Bust Half Dollar. Coin has a trace of friction on the Lady?s cap and cheek the final stars are nicely struck, pleasing due to the absence of contact marks. The shield is full with great detail and the coin actually looks much more like an Uncirculated piece than one that grades AU. NGC has certified three pieces as O-110 Bust Half Dollars

10th Anniversary Platinum Set

Why did I do it? I was ready to leave on Christmas eve for 2 days of holidays with relatives (UGGGG). 30 minutes before leaving the door bell rang and it was the Fed Ex driver. He said Merry Christmas as I signed for the package. I looked at it was from The Fullfillment Center. I Yelled, they are 10 days early. I put them on the table and then left. I got back late Wednesday and looked at the box. I wanted to open it so bad. Thursday morning they were on the way to NGC. I looked at my

ready or not, here it comes Well my fellow collectors, I did it. I swallowed hard, bit the bullet, and did the proverbial 360* slaaaam dunk...posterizing my bank account and bought the 10th anniversary platinum set from the mint yesterday! Holy Shiites and Sunnis! Will this be another huge anniversary set like the ASE's in 1995 and both the ASE's and AGE's of 2006? (silence! I'm praying). Only time will tell. I just hope NGC can hear my prayer and grade them both 70's when they hit the graders

Where Oh Where Can It Be?

Where is that elusive 1961 Pl quarter? Here I am Trying to build the ultimate 1953-67 Canadian Pl 25 cent collection. Trying to locate top grade pl quarters is like a needle in a hay stack. Fortunatly, Treasure Gallery ( on Ebay ) is there to help. However, they are about tapped. Except for a few pl-68's that are way out of range(on the wish list maybe). Now I'm getting down to a few hard to gets. If I want to pay, I can certainly obtain the earliest ones. NOW though, for the strangest hard to

The Eagle Has Landed

2008 Proof Silver American Eagles went on sale today I'm sure that most everybody here knows that. I just thought that I'd share in case somebody hadn't gotten the word. I got in right at 12:00 when they went on sale, and had no problems navigating the site. I had heard that in the past, the Mint had Web Server issues handling load at initial sales, but not this time. I sailed right through the process. They must've upgraded their infrastructure. Or maybe I was the only person interested... :-

Set Of Beauty - US American Eagles

Reaching for #10 I?m so grateful that metal prices are on the rise. It?s easy justifying to my significant other that buying gold and silver coins is an investment (purchase of my (our) Complete American Eagle set). My 2007 goal was to make modest ranking increases throughout the year. As I approach ranking position #10 I realize that it will most likely will be the high point of set. Have you seen the #1 ranked set? GEEZ. I believe its made of the rare metal unattainium. I can?t fathom how an

ZERO-BASED "WANTING"

A Revised Approach to Creating My 2008: 15 Most Wanted List In the past, when creating my "List", I would start with the previous year's list and adjust/ remove existing items; then add any new coins that struck my fancy. While reviewing my coin inventory listings in November, I decided to take a different approach for 2008. A zero-based approach: -I ignored the 2007 list entirely. -I then reviewed each coin series and noted each coin that I would most like from that series. -I then pr

THANK YOU D.M. !!!

An Annual Wish List: A Marvelous Idea, By Jove! A well developed plan, boldly executed, is the key to a winning chess game. Could my other hobby inform me in my numismatic pursuits? I think it may..... Today's journal entry by D.M Merrill struck me like a thunder bolt. While he was grading his collecting efforts in the journal I took away the idea of his yardstick: the "15 Most Wanted List". What would it take to create a proper annual wish list? Certainly I must first take a more determ

2007: COLLECTING YEAR IN REVIEW

A Review of the Year: purchases, sales, and goals. *Top 15 Most Wanted List: As in 2006, I was able to acquire only 3 coins on the list; however, in 2007, they were higher ranking coins (#1-2-4). The other difference is that I purchased #1 twice! I found the final coin needed to complete my Barber Quarter set (1900-S, MS-62) in January, and was lucky enough to spot a nice upgrade (MS-64) in October. I noticed a continuation of quality issues throughout the year. I rejected over 60% of

" To Slab or not to Slab"?

Lots of "Raw" Coins! Any advice from you all? Here I sit after Christmas looking at what I have and seeing what high grade coins are bringing, I wonder if I should send them in to the only two grading services I trust. This being NGC and PCGS. I bought two rolls of 1955-D washington quarters almost twenty years ago and just recently unwrapped them. I did not find any multi-colored toning, quite the contrary they are all "blast white". From the looks of them I dont think any would grade less th

End of 2007 Trivia Contest

Win a CASH prize!! I wanted to finish off this year with a little fun, so here goes... first the rules... 1. I make the rules. Rules are subject to change at any time for any reason. 2. Winner will probably be selected at random from all correct responses. Winner could also be selected by my Ouiji Board, who knows. 3. If this does not seem fair... DONT PLAY! Before I get into the details of this contest, a CS friend of mine earlier this year posted a contest, and I just loved the rul
