I too have 'em!
But mine are a bit different but maybe at least partly why we're into this "hobby".
I too sit and watch the price of metals grow. I feel smarter than many of my friends/co-workers/family because I acted. I have been telling them for the last 3 years gold/silver are the smart hedge and a good place to park some assets. I started buying silver in the $6.25/oz price range. Gold was about $400/oz when I started buying. And platinum was $900/oz.
Now, look at their prices. Go her
VDB on the reverse appears doubled
I recently picked up a 1909 VBB Lincoln Cent and after close inspection concerning the VDB it show doubling on each of the letters. The coin was found in a circulated roll of coins and brought to me where upon I purchased the coin at a reasonable price. I then looked the coin over in detail and found this error. I am wondering if this is common or uncommon. I have not sent the coin out to NGC as yet but plan on doing so as soon as I get more information on th
A day off work and watching silver prices exceed 16.00 an oz.
Greetings everyone:
Today is an odd day for me personally as I woke up late for work due to a power outage that took my clock off the alarm, so as I called in to say I was on my way, the boss says " well, we actually don't have any service calls today so if you want to take a vacation day so you get paid, that's really fine."
It HAS been slow at work this week. I am a heating and air conditioning service technician and my wor
Agreeing with Bullies, what is the world coming to?
Its really weird that they do that, yet you have to be a paying member to look up and verify a serial number on a coin to begin with.
At least they don't put our addresses on the public view of our pages, then the shady people wouldn't need to copy, they could just go and steal them and break them open all while submitting them again.
.....kinda.....
Well, as you probably know, I'v been concerned about my beloved 1971 set, and being tossed down to number 5. Thanks to HA, I was able to attain a half 69 DCAM for what "I" would consider a good price. My darling wife would disagree, seeing that it's only 50 cents, and if I paid $1.00 for it, I got ripped off. Let's not tell her just yet the price I won it for.
AND WITH THAT SIAD, here's the teaser part where I said "kinda". Yes, I got my coin for a price I was willing t

Now if I could just win the PowerBall...
I have to admit that I have not been on the Collector's Society site very much recently. A lot of things are going on at home that are a lot more pressing here of late. So imagine my surprise when I open up my e-mail and receive a note from a very nice young gentleman (who shall remain nameless) telling me Congratulations.
I was quite surprised, to say the least. I never win anything, although I did win a basket that a lady at work made with potpourri
Thanks everyone...
I just want to say thank you for everyone who has read my Journal Entires and those who have helped me through out this year. BEING ONLY 14 YEARS OLD I am really suprised that a won such a big award like this one and am very honered to be accepted.
I hope to put out more great journal entries here in the year 2008 and hope that you keep reading them. I also want to send out congrats to NEVERMAN and BRUCE WILLMORE who were the other two winners in the 2007 Journal Awards.
Find out about NGC slabs here.
You can go to www.SampleSlabs.com to learn about NGC's slab changes over the years. The author of this website has done a very thorough compilation of the slabs NGC has used. Hope this helps.
2007 journal award winner
Congratulations!!! Keep up the good work. It is with the "participation" of members like you, that will keep this alive and growing. Creating a community that will help entertain members as well as inspire them, beyond just the collecting factor.
AND... my 2008 Proof Silver Eagle is on the way!!
First, many thanks for all of you who take time out of your busy lives to read my journal. I hope I have been able to entertain and encourage all of you who do read this.
Also, I am greatly humbled, and thoroughly surprised to have won a 2007 Journal Award. I really appreciate the acknowledgment, it means a great deal to me to have won.
Thanks Collectors Sociey!!
Now, I have to tell you I am THRILLED to announce my 2008 Proof silv
I got these coins today (Jan 10th, 2008) and they are the same coin, same year, same grade, all graded by NGC (supposedly), but the holders are noticeably different.
Ok, these differences are FAR less subtle than in the NGC announcement the other day, and I wonder if NGC just changed the label, or if the counterfeiting is more widespread. I just received the coins today, but since they are coins for the same year and mintmark, color me paranoid, but it seems like they should have similar hold
Jefferson with beard
I opened a 1959 P OBW on Jan.2nd 2008 and noticed that 60-75% of the nickels obverse had what looked like a short beard under the chin of Jefferson. The hair is little bubble looking stuff. One of the coins even has the bubbles going around the outline of Jefferson and it makes the forehead and nose look dubbled. Some coins have the the bubble stuff on the ponytail as well chin/neck.The coin in the picture was a random pick I didn't search the roll to pick the best one to pho
Counterfiets with actual matching NGC serial numbers? I feel so vulnerable. Kinda like my home alarm system aiding the thiefs.
I totally agree with bully. There is no need for NGC/Collectors Society to display serial numbers in set listings, even a part of it, to the general public. But if we must, just a partial listing of numbers should suffice. We certainly need NGC to add security features in light of this new information.
Fake NGC holders
I can't agree more... that NGC MUST change their policy and hide most of the id #'s from the public.. with only the owners and NGC being able to see the full numbers. It is truely amazing how much more an NGC coin will sell for.. vs one of the lesser 3rd party graders. No wonder that the counterfeiters are using NGC as their model with so much more to be made this way. And if we are to put out trust in NGC and their grading sservices... then they owe it to us to do the most
If you will order one from the Mint, Your wife may get jealous of your new girl friend..... Miss Liberty
I have in hand the new 2008 silver Eagle Proof coin. I will state, the Mint has gotten this one right. I have fallen in love with the HOT very Hot babe on the 2008 Silver eagle. This is one of the sharpest and cleanest coin I have the chance to own. The changes the mint has made to the coin has reinforced the strong points of the coin. I encourage you to buy one and see for yourself.
Or at least giving them the tools the need?
After reading NGC's announcement yesterday about counterfeit NGC holders, I don't know about anyone else, but my stomach just about fell out. Part of bidding with confidence on Ebay for me, for instance, is buying NGC (or PCGS) graded coins.
I recognize that NGC and law enforcement may be taking this very seriously. Nonetheless, hearing that counterfeiters went to such elaborate lengths to counterfeit the coins and the slabs was a serious blow
NGC grading
I finally sent 5 morgans.. older ones that I have had for a while...a 1893 S...1894..1895 O...1889 CC.. and 1893 CC...
I was a bit dissapointed...but then again not surprised...
being still pretty new to collection... the 2 CC's came back improperly cleaned... and the 93S.. came back FA 2...a bit lower then I had hoped for. the other 2 were just about where I thought they might be.. VF 30. I am learning more that I should be buying graded coins instead...so I will absolutely
Where are they all at?
It seems that if you have purchased coins at any of the major auction sites your email gets flooded with information about these HUGE coin shows that are thousands of miles away. Not sure about the rest of you but would reather use my money on purchaseing the coins instead of on traveling hundreds if not thousands of miles to go one of these shows.
I am not saying I dont like coin shows becasue there is diffentlly a reason for coin shows. Many people can find bargins
Where is that elusive 1961 PL quarter? (act II)
I've looked and looked, searched and searched. FINALLY!! I found one! It's not in the holder that I want. ICCS, well I can get that corrected easy enough. I'll send it for grading at NGC. It's a Canada 1961 PL-65 Heavy Cameo 25 cent. I thought for a bit that I could loose it. There was someone else interested, and bidding for it as well. Alas, I was vicorious! It sure would be nice to get the cross grading done and get it into my registry set. Bo
NGC HAS MY BOX AND YES ! I DID NOT OPEN THE BOX
O.K. MY 1ST JOURNAL ENTRY I SAID DO NOT OPEN THE BOX, AND I AL MOST OPENED THE BOX WHEN FED-X CAME ON DEC 24TH, WE WERE HAVING OUR XMAS PARTY AT THE OFFICE NOT THINKING IT WAS MY 10TH ANNIVERSARY PLATINUM SET, I THOUGH IT WAS MY DOLLY MAITSON`S AND AM I GLAD I CHECK THE MINT TRACKING NUMBER 1ST. BECAUSE ITS MY 10TH ANNIVERSARY SET, WOW!! ITS HERE OH NO! I CANT OPEN THE BOX? SO ON THURSDAY THE 26TH I BOXED IT UP AND SENT IT TO NCG. ITS JAN 8TH 200
Many reasons
In reviewing Dutch's Journal entry, there are several reasons (some which make sense and others not so much) why a coin with a 3M mintage is more valuable then one with only 300K. For Morgan dollars, this phenomenon is usually the result of which coins were placed into circulation and when and which issues were more prone to melting in the "silver rush" of the late 1970s. Reading Q. David Bowers' Encyclopedia of US Coins is a good resource for finding out all of the "condition r
