A penny for your thoughts

Penny rumors are flying I have heard a couple of things recently. One being that shortly after the 1st of the year the Federal Reserve will start to pull all the copper cents (1959-1981 plus some of the 82's) from circulation as the price of copper continues to rise, at present a penny is worth about 3 cents by weight. The scrap yards in my neighborhood are paying $2.40 for clean brite copper that works out to 1.6 cents for a penny. I have heard this from people from many different states. I h

Something to think about

Lincoln pennies I believe they will quit making the Lincoln penny this year, so I wonder how the market will adjust to no more Lincolns? Will even the so-so specimens of key years go for much more than now? Has anyone else starting to hoard pennies? Just curious what everyone thinks about it.

The Curse Of The 1942 Half Dollar

this story would almost be comical if were happening to someone else.. About a year ago I bought a coin...a seemingly harmless coin and quite attractive...little did I know that it was a cursed coin !!!! The story starts about a year ago when I saw an attractive, raw 1942 Walking Liberty Proof half Dollar at a Stacks sale............... Being the concientous collector that I am, I checked with other sales and decided that a $400 chance bid was an intelligent if not even conservative bid..a

My First VAM!

Since I started with Binions, why shouldn't my first VAM be a Binion! I purchased this VAM in 2004. My schooling in coin collecting has been very costly, I'm sure I over paid for this coin! But, you have to start somewhere and hopefully you learn from your mistakes and will make better choices.

Silver Eagles A La Mode

I agree with Neverland The Eagles are way ovehyped from an investment point of view. Many of us are into numismatics for the joy of the coin and the thrill of the chase. Many of us are into the Eagles for purely an investment persepctive. I am draw from each side of the aforementioned. In my humble opinion, the ASE's are overhyped from an investment standpoint. They are, no doubt, one of the most lovely coins produced in the world today and that is why I buy them. The last few years I

Silver Eagles Once Again...

My Take on pretty silver thing... I have been away from the site a few days, and it looks like my most favorite coin has been a hot topic in the journals, and I cannot help myself but to chime in here. When I first saw the silver eagles, I fell totally in love with everything about the coin. From the way it looks, to the feel of it in my hand, you name it, I just love everything about the coin. I have bought a few coins from some auctions, and then eventually I started a subscription from t

Silver Eagles

Hello again Everybody! I tend to agree with revenant. I don't think that there is much of a future in high-end graded Silver Eagles either. The only ones that I own are for their bullion value. To me there is no comparison between a SAE and a nice high grade or scarce/rare date Morgan or Peace Dollar. Besides the fact that they are intrinsically more attractive, I would go so far as to say that even the common ones are considerably more scarce than any of the SAE's as well as a superior invest

Silver Eagles

To buy, or not to buy right now I must say in all fairness, I do not own any silver eagles. But from what I have seen in this market, and others like it, you should wait. With the coins going for that much, there will be late comers who send in coins laying around for the last 10 years, trying to cash in on the hype. Therefore, more certifieds out there, and the demand will stay the same, but there will be more of them. Then you will be able to find a 'cheap' one here and there. I think they w

The Silver Eagle Phenomenon

What do you folks think? Are the current Silver Eagle "glory days" for real or are we in a bubble that will burst? With PF70 87, 93, 94 going for $2K to $5K, is this something still worth the investment? Will these coins at the very least hold this value? So far none of the more recent years seems to hold much glory. I buy them to keep my collection current, but I don't see any 04, 05 or 06 getting to $5K anytime soon. The 2006 Reverse may show some significant appreciation over time but not

More Silver Eagle Phenomenon

What about high dolar/low mintage 90's eagles? I am with revenant on the opinion that future Silver Eagles will be a non-event except for special ones like reverses, etc. Does anyone believe the 90's low mintage coins will retain and/or appreciate further, or is the consensus that even these won't be worth th $2K to $5K they command right now? The reason is I need the 93 and 94 to complete my set and I want to decide on whether to bite the bullet and pay today's prices in fear that they wi

Morgan Dollars

A must have series! ..When I first started collecting Morgan dollars, I jumped in with both feet. I looked around to see what would set me apart from other sets, so I sarted with Binon's. I felt if I obtained all that I could I would be set. Then I discovered Redfield, Fitzgerald, Richmond and on and on and on. I looked at what I had and could see I was going no where. So, I decided I only need one coin for each date and mint mark and started to pare my collection now. ..Then I became aware

The phenomenon is over

I think the age of high dollar Silver Eagles is over. The silver eagles are much more popular now than they were in the early 90s and many more of them are certified than a decade ago. I think the age of low pop MS70s and PF70s that command thousands of dollars is over except for events like the 2006 W and 2006 reverse proof.

A Gold German Indian

But I sure wish I knew more about it. If any of you read my earlier journal article about procrastination costing me a bunch of money at once, here is possibly another cost of procrastination. I had purchased this medal in a Stack's auction earlier this year. As you will be able to see from the photo I've attached, I bought the medal to put in my Wild West Signature set. But, and this is a big but, I waited several months to get it graded. I received it back a week or so ago, body bagged as

12/17/07 Sick from the 9 day cruise.

Started a second registry set today. Man am I sick! my head is swimming and I can hardly walk straight and my ribs still sore from the upchucking. Oh well lay back and enjoy the ride I guess, . I started my second registry set with the NGC First strike 2006 MS70 and PFUC70 Buffalos. I was looking at my modern $5 & $10 commemorative set and thinking of ways to finance the completion of my registry set when it hit me that I had won two Buffalos awhile ago and could start a new registry

A NEW YEAR

Coin Collecting ..Well it's a new year as far as coin collecting is concerned. This past year has been fun and educational. NGC and my follow collecters are just great! I've enjoying reading ALL the journal entries and looking at your outstanding collections. ..My goal is to complete some of my sets before going after new series. But, with my ADD I have a hard time focusing on only one goal. ..I've started the new year off with this perfect coin.

What a steal!

Just won a NGC MS70 2003 Gold eagle for the amazing low price of....... $94.01. The Numusmedia price is $162. I am amazed and happy at this good fortune. My max bid was $108.88 and I figured I'd lose it to the next bid of $110. But that bid never came. Wow! I wish I could say this is the last coin of the year. Not the one I bought today, but this is an NGC 2005 MS70

Final 2007 Acquisition

This is it the last new coin for the year. As the year draws close to the end, I've added one new coin. This is an upgrade for my type set. I had a MS-62 Trade $ and this MS-64 replaces it. The toning is really neat and it also has great cartwheel luster. Happy Holidays Everyone

Hats off to Penny Man

Penny Man takes the award Penny Man took the award for best 1944 mint set this year. I had the honor of that award last year but Penny Man added diligently to his collection throughout this year and as a result passed me by. Congratulations Penny Man and if your set has given you as much pleasure in building as mine has then the award is secondary. However, I am looking to pass you up for 2008 so be forewarned

My first journal entry

This is becoming addictive I have always liked collecting... mostly morgans and peace dollars...and have learned alot in the past few years. Almost all of my silver dollars are not slabbed...what a mistake... as now I can see what I purchased when I was first starting out..and what I thought I was buying... but the graded coins... look so much better... and now make me feel so much better. Anyway.. I finally sent my first group of morgans in to be graded... and can't wait to see how they com

New Skis or another Gold coin?

Went to look at skis and no one would wait on me. Is that an omen? I went to 2 differnt sporting goods stores. I looked at several skis that fit my price range in both. Walked back and forth for 10 minutes or more. Kinda just milled araound hoping a ski salesperson would come by, but no. No employees ever came over and served me. So I ask, is that an omen that says. Don't spend money on skis when there are lots of good gold coins out there to buy.   This is one of the new gold coins from

Thanks Tom

you know who you are I just wanted to say "thanks" to Tom of Palmdale, Ca. for getting me into this hobby again after living blissfully without it for forty plus years. Through what started as casual conversations on breaks, reminiscing how my older brother and I collected pennies as kids, he got me thinking about getting back into it. With Tom's three generations of collection experience (imagine what's in the vault) and advice, he got me going with purchasing (innocently enough) a 2006 silve
