My niece

Trying to be a good uncle, In just 2 days my first niece, Cara, will be 3 months old. I hope I?ll make a good uncle in a few years but we?ll see. I was on eBay last week looking for Jefferson MS65FD and MS66FD dollars for my presidential dollars set. It occurred to me that the Jefferson dollar was released on August 15, just 6 days before my niece was born. The ?First Day of Issue? coins are basically as old as my niece. I thought it would be cool to get one of these and give it too her when

Procrastination Costs...

...a big chunk of change when you let the submissions pile up. Today was the big day, I sure cleared a space on my collecting central table. But as you can tell from the title, I wish I had did just a few at a time. Yes, I have to admit, I usually never do today what I can put off for a month (year?). Today, it cost me big time. I sent out 4 different coin submissions today, and still have 2 currency submissions to get ready so I can mail them Friday (which is my holiday day off since Thanks

What a way to spend the morning!

Pictures Well I got my girl a new camera last week a Samsung 10.1 digital. So I thought what the heck lets try this bad boy out. I'm no photo expert but after a few tries I think they came out allright. Used the AMP setting and macro placed on a green tone and took them outside. But that wasn't the hard part. I soon realized I had to go in order on those presidential dollars since theirs two sets and make sure their numbers matched up plus resize everyone of those darn pics. a lot of work f

LEFT HOOK!!! UPPERCUT!! HE'S DOWN 2

I was happy with #3 in my beloved 1971 proof set, but now I fell down to 5 Ya see! That's what I get for devoting too much time (and $)on the comics! I was too close to getting a PF69Deep Cam Half, and then I could of held #2 for awhile. I see that the time has come to start sifting through my collection (s) and getting some funds raised should another opportunity arise to aquire a "coin of interest". It's all good. Congrats to those that made the grade! Jealous? Yes. I'll admit

The Things ( and People) I am Thankful For

It IS Thanksgiving week, NOT Christmas YET I am going off of the beaten path a little bit here and am entering a post that is not really as much about coins, or collecting, as it is about being thankful and grateful for the health, career, and people who make everything good possible. "Everything good" includes my Silver Eagles. I went shopping with my wife last night and was astonished that the Christmas decor was already up, and being sold. I can't even watch TV without being fed "GI

Latest Acquisition

Bought this coin over the internet a few weeks ago. This coin is a very nice original 1806 Draped Bust 25c, AU-53. It is toned just right for me and still has some luster. I saw the photos of it, had it sent, and it looks as nice or better in hand. It is high among favorite coins of my collection.

REGISTRY SETS

PEDIGREE COINS AND SETS I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE REGISTRY HAVE A SEPERATE RANKING SYSTEM FOR PEDIGREE COINS OR SETS. AS FOR ME I HAVE TWO SETS LISTED UNDER JEFFERSON WAR NICKELS, ONE SET IS JUST OMAHA WAR NICKELS AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE A SEPERATE RANKING SYSTEM FOR ALL PEDIGREE'S. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEDIGREES OUT THERE AND THINK THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE HAVE THERE OWN RANK AS YOU USUALY PAY MORE FOR THESE COINS. IF YOU AGREE PLEASE LET THE REGISTRY KN

Got my latest submission results

Some good, some disappointing. Nothing out of the ordinary, though. I was a little disappointed with my Commemoratives. They all came back PF 69 UC. That's OK. I have plenty more, and they're actually quite a thrill to have graded, because some of them carry a heck of a lot of Registry Points and fetch pretty good prices at auction when you get a PF 70 UC. Plus, I finally broke my drought on Statehood Quarters. Out of the 10 that I submitted, I got 5 PF 70 UCs, with the other 5 being PF 69 U

Full speed ahead may not be the best appraoch to this wonderful hobby. I've enjoyed reading other journals, so I thought it was time to write my first entry. Over the last four months I have followed a similiar path as some of your journals I've read. I stated collecting coins in June 7, 07. At that time the only coins I owned were the ones in my pockets. Flash, I was off like the hare in that famous race. My first interest was to get some complete sets X 3 for each of my 3 children. I did tha

Give Peace a chance!!!!

Could the end be in sight. Another one bites the dust. One more down and then there were five. After going almost three weeks without adding a new Peace Dollar to my collection, I scored a 1934P in MS62 A nice golden toned coin, in a rather lack luster auction. There were only six bids and my last bid held up for the last 45 minutes of the action. This is the second auction in a row that has been like this. I shouldn't complain, I am getting good prices on the coins, but I also like the excitem

WOW! SAYS IT AGAIN!

BUT IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! THIS IS A SUPPLIMENT TO MY LAST ENTRY, WELL IT HAS BEEN THREE WEEKS SINCE I GOT THE GRADES TO ONE OF MY LAST TWO SUBMISSIONS. THEY JUST NOW WENT TO QUALITY CONTROL, I AM JUST WONDERING HOW LONG THEY WILL SIT IDLE BEFORE I GET TO SEE THE GRADES. I AM DYING TO SEE THE GRADE OF MY 1950 S/D WASHINGTON QUARTER, SHES A BEAUTY AND I JUST KNOW SHE WILL HIT MS65(CROSSED FINGERS). I am Collecting a Herd of Buffalos

I Found This One Roaming The Range While going on a hunt I was able to track down another Buffalo. They are scarce these days in fact some would say the Bison is extinct. But of course the type I am looking for are not in your pocket change or roaming the great American plains as they once did. I came across a nice 1916, well toned having full horn right to the point and split tail. Tone was a nice golden tone making a nice appearance. I am hoping that it will grade at least MS 65, but whateve

Looking ahead......and Back.

To the American Eagle 25th Anniversary...and back to "the day" Greetings again!. I have been pondering for a few weeks now what the mint may do for the 25th Anniversary of the Eagle coins. And at the same time I have been wishing I started collecting in 2006. Are they going to do another very limited reverse proof? Are they going to offer something COMPLETELY different..like Edged lettering? A person can dream all day about this. I also remember the day I decided to star

So far.....

How it all began...... Well I have been collecting coins since I was about 10. I started like everyone else, looking through jars of pennies and the change in your Dad's pocket. I started to fill the books and going to auctions. I did not have the money to purchase what I wanted but would buy everything that no one else wanted. I ended up with Franklin proofs and old Canadian coins. I worked at a gas station when I was out of High School and would get all the coins that was propably stolen fr

increasing coin buying instead of holders.. I won't make a blanket statement and say Everyone or Always, but lately I have noticed a different kind of bidding showing up at auctions. Several weeks ago I noticed that Heritage had six MS66 1946-S Walkers coming up for auction at one time. I wasn't particularly looking for a 66, I was mainly looking for a certain strike quality and cleaness. If I had found that coin I was going to try and purchase it, whether it was in a slab that said 64, 65

Remember those who served!!

Veterans' Day (formerly Armistice Day) November 11, is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918, ending World War I, after four years of conflict. At 5 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 1918 the Germans signed the Armistice, an order was issued for all firing to cease; so the hostilities of the First World War ended. This day began with the laying down of arms, blowing of whistles, impromptu parades, closing of places

The thrill of being a collector !!

The excitement of being a boy collecting returns 10 times as much as an adult. In short I was introduced to collecting coins by my Grandmother who when I was a child use to take me to the Coin Vault where I could spend the money I saved and of course a little help every now in then collecting dimes, buffalo nickels and pennies and that is where it all began. Recently I returned home this year to find in the safe my old collections. Renewed with a new child hood joy that had been forgotten I th

From Hard Decisions To A Small Downsize

...decided how I want to collect. Well, since my last journal articles, you've probably noticed several changes. Well, just a few more will be made. Please let me explain. Really first I must say a weight has been lifted. I have my collecting goals in focus, and all my hard decisions have been made. My collecting goals are: Wild West signature sets first (coins & currency); then Dollars; then my Mexican sets and other signature sets. Plus currency, I do love the ornate engraved notes,

Explosive Growth

I think I have a problem... Well, I started collecting slabbed coins about 5 months ago and today I realized something, I have 43 (44 will be here in about a week) certified coins. For the first 3 months of collecting I was on summer vacation and didn't have anything to occupy my time. I added about 10 coins a month for 3 months reaching 32 coins by September 1st. After that my collecting has slowed to about a coin a week for 2 months, and that's with me working as hard as I can to take it slo

Silver Dollars

Everyone's favorite coin Dollars have aways spoken to me in a way that's completely different from anything else. First, they're big! Second, by the time I was small the large dollars had completely disappeared from circulation and the first time I saw a significant number of silver dollars was in a coin store when I was less than 10, and when you're that young those big shiney silver coins are just so impressive. When I started collecting last year the first thing I did was to buy some raw
