More Coins And Winning Currency Bids

A bad day turned into a good day... I'm really surprised I'm writing this journal article so soon. Yesterday started out to be a very bad day, as I finally had my dental work (surgery) done. Fortunately, I had no problems, at least not yet, and the oral surgeon was happy, as he had no problems. So I returned home sore and kind of down in the dumps. But when I arrived home, I had Four, yes 4, packages of coins waiting for me. :-) Plus, I felt good enough last night to watch 6 auctions on David

Survived First Submission

Canadian Maple Leafs...Tough to Grade Well, I survived my first submission. Two Canadian Legacy of Liberty Sets; one golden tulip; one Tulip Privy. All appeared visually better than what graded; but the human eye can't see all that 6-power magnification can. Actually, SP 68s for most of the Legacy Maple Leafs (one was SP 65); and MS64 and MS65 for the Poppy Quarter aren't too bad. And an SP 69 Ultra Cameo for the Liberation (Tulip Privy) was great. All-in-all am well-satisfied and will un

Peace Of Luck

An AU 1924S is now mine. My quest to finish my Peace Dollar collection by years end, got a little easier with the acquisition of a 1924S in AU55.I was trying for a AU58 but lost out by a dollar. When I came across this AU55 and won it for less than half the final price of the AU58. While all of that was going on I also had my eye on a 1924D in MS63, I thought if I had lost out on the second 1924S,I would switch and try for the 1924D. As luck would have it I got the 1924S and the 1924D sold for

What to do, the whole thing or do I break it down?

Do I stop listing each denom. and do the whole set? I started listing my collection of the Irish series by doing each denom. and now I'm thinking maybe I should just do the whole series in one listing. This would take about 175 slots and some time. What to do. Guess I'll think about it this week and if you see my Ireland listings gone it means I'll soon be doing the whole series as one listing.

My 1st GOLD Eagle MS 70 Early Release....

I just won my auction for it. Greetings again! Well, I am pretty excited about this one. I just won an auction for a 2007 MS 70 Early Release Gold Eagle for $105. It has everything going for it except it is NOT a W but, for my first Gold eagle, I think I did pretty well, maybe paid a LITTLE too much, but I took into consideration it is pre-graded, saving me a grading spot when my member package comes. I am looking forward to adding this to my registry under gold eagles w

Monarchs on Coins

4 Queens and 9 Kings would make this a killer poker hand. I guess the Kings should come first, as techically they do outrank a Queen, but ladies first. This weekend I was going through some of my coins and I was surprised to see the number of British Monarchs that have been depicted on their (The UK and the Commonwealth) coins. I am quite certain I do not have all of the differnt Monarchs or their different effigies. My collection comprises 4 Queens and 9 Kings, for a total of 13 monarchs, w

My second try at coin pictures for the registry

Hopefully this is getting better .... Well, After my first frustrating attempts at coin photography, I decided to give them another try. I took this one outdoors around 1 pm, under indirect sunlight. This one looks better to me, since its more evenly lighted. This may take some time to get the hang of it, but I think i am going in the right direction. I .....MAY .... get the hang of this by the time I have taken pictures of all my graded coins. Thanks for any opinions.

American Silver Eagle Are the best of the Modern Coins

A couple of tips you might want to check out. Unlike the regular issue you are able to buy the W minted Silver Eagles right from the mint. I was lucky enough to order a subscription for 5 coins a year from the mint just in time to get the 2006W's like I do with Proof sets and Mint sets and the PR Eagles. The 5 Silver Eagles cost around $109 total for the 5. I sent the 5 2006W in for grading and got back 2 MS70 the others were MS69 I sold 2 of the MS69 and my 2 70's and the 69 were pretty much

My Silver Eagles

My most important and most frustrating set. I've wanted to build a set of Silver Eagles since I found out they existed. They're cool coins and they started minting them the same year I was born. It took me a long time to decide how I wanted to collect them, but I settled on getting them graded as NGC MS69s. I might collect the proof coins after I finish getting the Mint States. I spent tons of time trying to win online auctions over the summer to build the set... and half of them came back wit

I hope 2008 Brings as Much Excitement as 2006/2007

Speaking of the Silver eagle Market...AGAIN!! Well, what an exciting couple of years the US Mint has given us all with the new Presidential Dollars, The scarce 2006 W Silver Eagles, the Back ordered 2007 w silver eagles... ( will the 2007's be as scarce?) I now find myself glued to "Shop at Home" coin shows like I would be glued to a mystery movie with high suspense as the Eagles are brought before the cameras. Beautiful coins!! I am looking forward to submitting my 86 proof silver ea

The Rule does need to change

I really think that the rule should be 90%. It's always seemed to me that in order be #1 a set should truely be complete. The registry points are an arbitrary system designed by a group of people that thought they knew the best way to rank coin sets using a function of (supposedly) multiple variables. I've never seen their algorithm and it may be the best ranking system that can be realistically achieved, but it may not be. However, no matter the case, it is extremely short sighted to say that

Re: I favor all your opinions

Paul: I appreciate your respect for the opinions of those of us who criticized your earlier post. But you still raise a collecting issue that gets me a little worked up. It?s summed up in your opinion that the low grade coins in your Whitman albums ?mean nothing.? I?m sure you intend that sincerely, and no doubt many others share your view. But to me, it's a slap in the face to numismatics. Like many here, I have a substantial investment in my coin collection, most of it in NGC and PCGS

I Just Upgraded to a Paid Membership

The Benefits Outweigh the Cost! Well, I have been puttering around here for FREE for too long now, and probably writing like the newbie I am, so I decided that as much as I use the site, I may as well PAY my dues and quit acting like a SPONGE here!! I also figured it is better to pay and get some free grading benefits as I have a 2006 w silver eagle, a 1986 proof silver eagle, and some other bullion eagles that would look great in my registry. I also feel like it's better to get some ungra

I favor all your opinions

I know this is more than a hobby I see this all your point of views, and I have to disagree with alot of you.First let me make a clear understanding of what i meant by a (real set). Many sets are fairly easy to collect.peace dollars, ikes, susans, new presidents, statehoods, sacagua(however you spell her name)two and three cents..I am talking about those big sets:morgans,Saint gauduines, lincons, buffalos, jeffersons, franklins, Kennedy, mercury, and my favorite Roosevelt's.These collections are vast a

A change of subject

I really could care less about awards. I'm in it for the fun. Is anybody out here planning on going to the show in Baltimore next month? If so, I thought it might be fun to try to get a few people together so that we could meet face to face. Maybe stare at Hooter's Girls in between staring at Seated Dimes. I'm kidding of course, but if you're perhaps interested at putting a face along with the names that you see here, drop me a line.

NGC Changing Award Rules?

NGC won't change the rules...it just breaks them. Get the facts straight on the NGC Registry Awards rules. Check the last 2 years of awards. Even though there was a 50% completion requirement, Best of Category awards were given on point totals only. All sets with a higher point total won, even if they were less than 50% complete and there were sets with greater than 50% completion in the category.

Here's My two Cents

I think the rule should be changed lets make it 100% have a category for only complete sets. My goal in Collecting coins has always been to complete the set! I don't always succeed, and I have many works in progress but I keep trying. For many years I thought that the majority of collectors of NGC and or PCGS coins acted and thought like the one who started all this commotion. I joined the Collectors Society so I could submit coins for grading and nothing more. I didn't own one slabbed coin. O

NGC sticking to it's guns, I'm with Jackson 100%

Agree or Disagree? That my friend is the question. Wow, I am not going to go off on a massive tangent here. NGC has the right to set up it's awards however it wants. For those of you who are shooting for number one just to get a plaque, the true meaning of coin collecting has been lost. Sure, a nifty plaque whould be great fun to have and perhaps even put up on a wall. BUT, that's all it is..........a plaque. No one will remember or even care 5 years from now if you won best of category
