Thanks Michael

Can you all stand another image of a Mexican note? Thank you Michael for the kind words. I never thought of myself as a great writer, just an Iowa country boy who writes about what I care about. I suppose it's like any job or hobby, if you enjoy what you're doing, things (like writing) are a lot easier to do. I guess if I have one fault (at least from a collecting point of view), it's I like too many things, think too many coins and currency are pretty and waiting to be collected. That's wha

Iowa Silver Baron Bammer

Dedicated to Bammer

A good collecting friend and a great writer... Cannot say much more than that. Bammer has mentioned his interest in Mexican coins and notes. As I was going through my currency collection, I came across this and thought of my friend. This note is crisp uncirculated, series 1915 State of Chihuahua. Ten Pesos. Reverse has two red over-prints. Bought from my favorite dealer in Salt Lake City, Ace Coins. Hope you all had a great collecting weekend. Mike

A Future Collector?

Will my son follow in my numismatic footsteps? Today was my son's first birthday. He's had a rather rough first year, as he was born very premature, and spent the first three months of his life in the hospital. (His twin brother passed away after 17 days.) I thank G-d that my son is doing well, and is a happy, normal one year old. I went to a coin show last weekend, and was thinking that in a few years, he might want to come with me, just as I went to shows with my Dad. I bought him

The "Burnished" Identity

A note of comparison... Greetings! (again) The other night while I was getting my coins ready to go to NGC for grading, I took a moment and held my 2007W and 2006W uncirculated burnished silver eagles next to my 1989 MS 69 bullion coin, just for a comparison. You know what? The Bullion coins sure are more, ummmm Brilliant? looking. I think I like those better in an asthetic sense. BUT do not get me wrong, I do really LOVE the burnished coins, but I really was struck at how beautiful the

Foreign Coins Are My Fun Time

Foreigns are fun and educational Reciently I found that foreign coins are fun and educational. I had always collected U.S. coins from the start, since I was maybe seven years old. Yet more recently I started going through some old and some not so old foreign coins and found that it was really great fun just to put them up in a binder, checking out the countries, various denominations, and styles of coins. I have learned a lot, and it is helping me spot coins that have been unfamiliar to me. Th

Guys, I am batting "zero" in downloading scans of my PCGS coins, in the signature section. I have no problems in the competitive section. Maybe there is some kind of esoteric, clandestine code that only certain prople have the right to use. I have done everything I can. Either I am not computer literate enough, or intelligent enough, or I'm doing something I'm not supposed to be doing, violating the rules. All of my pictures are between 40kb to 60kb. I have been trying to do this for over 2 we

Trial...and failure!!

could not upload my coin images So this morning I tried to upload my coins images onto my registry, but I "exceeded the 120kb limit" so I will go back to the drawing board and try it again later. On the good news front, I sent my 5 coins in for grading the very next day after I got my membership packet in the mail, so they are on their way!! I can't wait to get the results back. They are 5 silver eagles, the 2 I am anxiously awaiting the results for are my 1986 Proof, and my 2006 W

Hey... I know that guy!

At least he cleaned up before he came to my house. Jose Pavon is on quite a few coins of Mexico. Not being a student of Mexico's history, I am not sure of his roll in history. I did find a nice article about the man... quite colorful I might add. http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/history/jtuck/jtfathermorelos.html

Hawaii proof coins are very breathtaking. My 50 Cent Proof63 is so nice to look at, I look at it with heavy magnification lots of times. And I never get tired of it. NGC graders gave this coin a PF63, with none finer. I would be frightened, to grade this coin lower than any others. I don't know the criteria they use when grading proof coins, but I do know that they know something that I don't If I saw this coin at the same time that I saw the other 3,and I had to assign them a grade, I would p

Renewal Time

reflections on another year Well I renewed my NGC-Collectors Society membership today. I know that some people keep two registry memberships but I only need one. NGC has cheaper submission fees, much friendlier and respectful people working there, the journal feature and also the signature sets--all of these things have made me a bit of an NGC loyalist. I am aware that some PCGS coins may be worth a bit more even slabbed at the same grade--but I won't sell my enjoyment of the hobby for s

Overhaul

Complete remodeling needed. I've taken the first steps towards revamping my SAE collection and getting that closer to completion, (I hope to be 100% by 1 year after the first coin was bought, about 7 months from now. I'm currently only about 50%.) Looking at my registry collection in general though, I'm convinced that I'll need to completely rework things. I need to update with all the new images and I think I'm going to redo all of my half-assed descriptions. Unfortunately this all gets t

Quest!

Searching. ....My quest to complete the three Canada collections I'm working on has been very enjoyable. Like all journeys, you can expect some dragons to try and stop you from reaching your goal! ....The Canada Aviation series is going well, the hardest part is finding them! But with time and money the goal is reachable! The Canada Lunar collection at this time has one dragon standing in the way, The 1998 Tiger! It's obtainable, just a matter of how much you're willing to pay. At least thes

Does anyone need a 1971-D Eisenhower "FRIENDLY EAGLE" RDV-006????????????????

I think I really lucked out on this one. O.K., here's the story. I wanted to pick up some Eisenhower dollars for use as poker chips, so I started checking some of the local banks.....nothing!! They're obsolete, right? So I decided to check on eBay for large lots of circulated coins. Bingo!!!! I started out bidding face value plus shipping, but I couldn't win any bids. So I tried bidding 1.25x face value, minus the shipping cost. I bid on quite a few before I finially won the bid on a lo

SAE Victory

Making progress. Last Friday I picked up a 1989 Silver eagle which has been shipped but hasn't arrived yet. Well, tonight I pulled a double, winning the 1988 and 1991 in a set of dutch auctions. This was partially to advance my set and partially to reward myself after a series of test grades all came back very good.

Museum Visit

Refered to by Jackson! ....I had a chance to stop by and see Cadmanco's So-called Dollars collection, suggested by Jackson! Here again is an amazing collection that will take many visits to enjoy. I've been having so much enjoyment looking at all the collections and passions involved, and it's free! ....This is my lastest addition to my Australia Lunar Collection! My wife was born in the Year of the Rooster, so it is only fitting she has the best!

22 Mercury Dimes

Looking back to 14 months ago. I found this old entry in another online journal I keep and thought it was worth revisiting. This was written only about 2 weeks after I started collecting, about 14 months ago, and the intended readers were non-collectors. "22 Mercury Dimes: Well, I still can't believe it. I was in a gas station convenience store and the guy in front of me paid for his 2 beers with 22 Mercury (1916-1945) dimes and 6 old Roosevelt dimes from the 40's and 50's. Now, what's the

The Glory of the Online Auction

" The THRILL of VICTORY..The AGONY of DEFEAT" OK, so I have yet another confession to make.   I live for the online auction. I LOVE it!! This is where being compulsive becomes a sworn enemy to everybody's coin budget. You know how it goes..the internal dialogue "OK, I will ONLY bid $25 for this NO MATTER WHAT..if I do not win it OH WELL!!" Then that dialogue changes during the last few minutes..or DAY of the auction. "What? that @#*@@!! is OUTBIDDING me by $5??? I'LL SHOW TH

1787 Serpents Head, New Jersey Copper

While going through a box of old foreign coins I came across something that looked different to me and little did I know that it was an early post colonial issue. The New Jersey Copper was unfamiliar to me and I did not know what I was looking at. The Serpents Head on the coin looked foreign to me so I thought it was a coin from another country. When I looked on the reverse there was a shield and some other markings. Still I did not know what I had in my hand. Then one day while I was going th

I thought them president's looked pretty good

Presidential coins: satin finish from mint sets are getting higher grades. I can't say what this means to the Presidential dollars in our collections but there are a lot of MS67's and even some MS68's both NGC and PCGS showing up for sale as the first round of graded coins from the 2007 mint sets hit the market. When I first got my Mint Set I thought the Presidential dollars look pretty good, I even ordered a second one thinking that I might break one up to have the dollar coins graded. I use

Coins as Gifts!

A great idea1. ....I just recently received my Coins Magazine, and they have some great stories about the history of giving coins as gifts. I started a few years ago, giving U.S. Mint Proof sets by the birth or marriage year. That didn't last to long, I guess people weren't jumping for joy. ....When I journeyed into certified coins, I started giving coins as gifts again. I gave my children (four) proof ASE NGC PF 69 or 70. My grandchildren (five) and son-in-law receive mint state ASE's MS-69

Adding ANOTHER coin to my Collection

MS 69 1989 Silver Eagle Well, I am definately a "NUMISMANIAC". No matter how many times I tell myself to stop this collecting of round metal objects..I just can't stay away from it...but this really is not a BAD thing...is it?? I just won an auction for a 1989 MS 69 Silver Eagle..should be here either Saturday or Monday. I paid $19.50 for it....once again, MAYBE a bit too much, but I am playing for the long run here..and once again it is pre-graded. I will be proud to add this to my r
