The offer I did not take

Will it come back to haunt me? So, after much thought and personal deliberation...and err...ok mumbling to myself....nightmares...etc. I decided not to take the "NGC 69 2006 Bullion One of 1st 50,000" coins I was thinking very hard about acquiring. I am sure it would be a great addition to my collection, but I just cannot bring myself to buy a bullion coin, graded or not, for $60.00. Now, I am positive this is going to come back and haunt me. 2006 is a real banner year for American Eagle

I think that this 1883 Hawaii Dime is a real "Bomb". I have a lot of Monster Toned Hawaii coins, and probably should join the "Toned Coins Collector Society". Just like the Hawaii Dollar in my last journal, This is a one of a kind dime This Hawaii Dime is graded MS66*, and according to the population reports, she is the only one. There are no '67 Hawaii Dimes yet, so the "star" makes this Dime the highest graded in the system. There are no blemishes, bag marks, and so on, and the eye appeal is

One Sixty Seven

A New Addition Dear Journal: As a collector of GSA Morgan Silver Dollars, it is rare to get the opportunity to acquire one graded MS67. I recently acquired such a coin for my non-Carson City set of GSA Morgan Silver Dollars. It is my first coin graded MS67 for this set. As of this writing, there have been only seven coins graded MS67 for all dates in the population report for GSA Non-CC Morgan Silver Dollars. There are three coins for 1879-S, including this one and one graded MS67 star.

My Hapawalu

Since the Signature section is not "user friendly" to picture downloads, I have to paste them on my journal This "Hapawalu" (Eighth Dollar) is the only one of this series graded as Cameo Proof. I love it, and I'm proud to show it off

My first MS 70

The allure of perfection... I think the idea of "perfection" features really prominantly in the thinking of coin collectors, not just in the concept of MS70s, but more abstract standards of perfection. Building the "perfect" set, and finding that "perfect" coin (that's rarely an MS70) is the thing we're all after. As a collector I'm not usually very concerned with MS70. The only things that can even be found in MS70 are modern proof/uncirculated strikes that were never even meant for circula

My First MS 70 Coin

It's Nice to have SOMETHING considered "perfect" ...I think? Now, I am just anordinary guy with ordinary tastes and not reall a whole lot of "needs". But when I saw this MS 70 W Silver Eagle Uncirculated coin, I got what treasure hunters refer to as "the fever". Day after day I lost sleep, anticipated and even OBSESSED about getting the coin and not having it be lost..or the deal falling through, etc. When it did finally get here I IMMEDIATELY registered it on my NGC registry, and s

Another upgrade...

My first journal entry... I just purchased a 1909 5C NGC PF66 Cameo to put into my Nickel set, and it replace a 1911 NGC PF64, though I still have a ways to go to get into ninth place.

My deal Came THROUGH!! YEA!!!

Now, to get to a dentist from all the stress teeth grinding for the past week... Don't you love it when a plan comes together? So, as I mentioned in an earlier entry, I have been awaiting the results of a deal I was trying to get on an early release NGC 70 Silver Eagle. And I did get it. For $60.00!! I have been seeing these in coin shops and in advertising pages for 150.00 and up. So I feel like I got a pretty good deal. I have to say, I will be proud to post this one in my co

Gamble Payed Off

wary of overseas ebay sellers With good reason, we should all have a healthy suspicion of overseas ebay sellers. I personally would never bid on any coin where the seller is from China, hong kong, singapore etc...However I do consider coins that are being sold from Europe. I have been burned once or twice but I have also had it pay off. I have gotten coins at great prices at times probably because other potential bidders didn't want to chance it. I guess the safest method is using Paypal so

"ms 69"

My computer has a REALLY DIRTY MIND!! So the other day I went to my search engine ( I use Dogpile) to look up some "NGC MS 69 Silver Eagle Coins" <--- exactly how I listed it in the search criteria. My computer then went to a WARNING screen stating " WARNING: The search criteria you listed MAY CONTAIN MATERIAL UNSUITABLE FOR ANYONE UNDER 18. MAY CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT..." Now, this took me aback as I never imagined a GRADED COIN as being anything "dirty" and I thought and thought abou

2 Slots Just Filled in my 1899 Mint Set

It had been nearly a year since I had a newly acquired coin to add to this set I finally filled 2 holes in my 1899 Mint Set. First, a nice, 1899-P $10 Liberty gold piece. Then I spied a 1899-P Barber 50c coin. Not overly shiny but rare enough that the MS62 grade still pulls in 1393 points. I am waiting to get them imaged and I will post their pics as soon as I can.

Rolling the Dice

To grade or not to grade Couldn't resist, had to go for the 70's. Sent in all of my Jefferson Spouse Coins the other day. They looked absolutely fabulous in their nifty boxes from the Mint. These coins were some of the nicest I've received from the Mint although one was a rattler. I'm thinking they all grade a 70 but who knows. I don't really care much about the grade other than for bragging rights. They are beautiful regardless. I'll post when I get the results back (any day). Have fun

Best Presidents I've Seen

The 2007 mint set arrived today. The Mailman brought my 2007 mint set today a total of 28 coins. I have been looking for some coins to make up a modern tier submission I needed four more coins to go with my 2007W $5 gold eagle and I think I found them, after looking at the presidential dollars in the mint set. I have Washington's and Jefferson's in MS66 and need the Adams P&D, but don't want to pay the price. The mint set presidents look better than my MS 66's. Later JimL4004

Into the fray again

I just couldn't resist... Well, here we go. Another submission packaged up to go to NGC. This time around, it's going to be: 1) 1955 Proof Set (minus the Lincoln. I bought a Lincoln on eBay not too long ago to replace the one from this set. The one in the set looks like Abe got a nasty parasite in his ear such as a Guinea Worm) 2) 1957 Proof Set 3) 1959 Proof Set 4) 1999 Clad Proof Quarters 5) 1986 Statue of Liberty $1 and 50c Commemoratives As I was putting this submission togethe

On Becoming a "Numis MANIAC!!"

Yes, I know that phrase has already been....COINED Greetings everyone! Now, I have to confess something right away. I am fringing on being maniacal about acquiring Silver Eagles...namely NGC graded 2006 and 2007 W uncirculated Silver Eagles. Last night I awoke at 2 am in a dream..NIGHTMARE rather that a deal I am working on related to a 2007 W Early Release MS 70 uncirculated Silver Eagle fell through...and I could not get myself back to sleep as I was busy pondering how BAD that wo

MY ICG Coins

Why ICG is not a top tier grading company part deux If you are not familiar with my part one: the situation that I?m having is that ICG (I Can?t Grade) is putting out 70's that aren?t even close to the 70 grade. I have returned several coins, 6 to be exact, reason being that they had smudges, nicks and scratches. I contacted Paul DeFlice which is the VP Of Marketing for ICG, he informed me that out of the 6 I sent in Half didn?t meet the grade, and the other half did. I received my "NEW" coins

pcgs vs ngc

Is one really "better" than the other? I'm not going to judge. This discussion could probably go on ad infintum without any clear answer really coming out. The only way to arrive at some empirical data is to take coins that have been graded by one company, carefully remove them from their holders, submit them to the other company as loose coins, and then record the results. This would need to be a large sample to make the results statistically valid, but why bother? I really think that the

my opinion well i think that pcgs graded coins bring a premium because they dont OVER GRADE COINS to make their major submitters happy you know the television shopping channels i am starting to question ngc graded coins i saw atleast a half dozen coins this weekend in ngc holders that in my opinion were over graded by atleast a point or two the first one that comes to mind is a 1938 d jefferson graded ms67 with a huge scrath visible to the naked eye on jefffersons' cheek a prime focal point wh
