re: Photography

I got some advice from a Portrait Photographer friend She told me to go out and buy a light tent, which I did. I got a small one for about $15 on eBay. I still need to get lamps to use with it, though. They'll be coming next week, probably. From what I understand, lamps with halogen bulbs placed above and on the sides of the tent diffuse the light and eliminate glare issues, with supposedly very good effects. Once I get the rest of the gear, I will post something to let everyone know how it wo

Re: Photographing Coins - Backgrounds & Lighting I was wondering if a black background would be better than white, I suspected it might be. Thanks for your wisdom about colors. Bammer cautioned me about the PCGS slabs, I appreciate your feedback about this as well. I guess really strong sunlight which washes out many types of pictures also applies to coin close-ups. Here in the mountains we have remarkably sunny days at times, so I'll have to experimemt to find the best lighting. I've no

RE : Photographing Coins

It is hell of a job to do good picture I sell sometimes coin on ebay also I am posting pictures in my registry and take a good picture is a hard job. First: Natural light is very good sometimes I go outside and block the direct sun with white piece of paper. If is overcast the picture seems darker, but too much light is not good I used many types of digital cameras and they are the key. I would not recommend lower brand of digital camera and also make sure it has a picture stabilizer this

No loop here. Just the camera lens one inch away. Oh! The camera was also set to its highest resolution and then cropped and compressed using a cheap photo suite program (like most of my other photos on the registry). This process even works for me on copper... vumc409

A Very Good Submission!

Oh! Canada ....The good folks at NGC have completed another good submission for me. NGC still remains the only grading company for me! ....I sent four coins in for my Canada Proof Dollar collection. Three of the coins I wasn't sure about, but felt the 2005 Canada Flag was a perfect coin, NGC agreeded. It looks like there are a few other coins in this set that will be hard to obtain, because of low mintages! ....My other two coins came out okay, but I'm always looking for a higher grade.

My Dog decided what my next submission is going to be

90 lb. Puppies... Gotta love 'em I left my Monster Puppy alone in the house for about a half hour while I went outside to trim bushes. I came back in, and he'd climbed up onto one of my wall unit sections and pulled down my Old San Francisco Mint Commemorative and was using the case as a chew toy. While the case is destroyed, he fortunately did not damage the coin or it's holder. I'm still trying to figure out how he got all the way up there, and I'm actually impressed by his ingenuity. An

Value of Grading Companies Thank you for the photos (you & Bammer.) I found the beautiful silver buffalo commemorative right where you told me to go, and right where I'd looked before. *Sigh, I just kept missing it for some reason. Which is especially dumb considering I have the coin. On another subject, I read what you had to say about slabbing in your journal. Being new to the finer art of collecting coins, I wanted to say that I have been collecting coins for their grade more than the

Presidential Dollars Mint State and Proof

Ive been suprised again. When the Presidential Dollars first started to come out I went right to the mint web site and subscribed for a roll of P&D of all of them. I also subscribed to the Proof sets. I now have six rolls of dollars and three proof sets not even opened. I was getting ready to open them up and start selecting the best ones for grading. First I had to checked out the E-bay actions to see if I could sell some of the extra ones that I was sure to have from my submissions and m

That's it! Thank you for sharing the photo. That IS the beautiful silver buffalo I was talking about. Is it called an American Indian coin perhaps? Given the Indian is on the front, the buffalo in reverse?   Best Regards, Mtn Poet

Silver Buffaloes...are sure pretty! The only silver Buffaloes I know of are the Uncirculated and Proof versions from 2001. I've attached a pic, Mtn Poet, to make sure I'm refering to the same coins you are. If I am, I think these 2 coins are gorgeous, especially the proof version.

Gold Ladies & Gents

Behind great men, even greater women! There aren't many perfect things in the world, but they are a pleasure to come across when we do find them. It was only recently that I saw my first perfectly graded coin. After learning what to look for, I finally took the plunge and purchased the First Two Spouses - Martha Washington and Abigail Adams in PF 70's. They are both beautiful coins, I hope they hold their value in time. My only complaint is the NGC slabs weren't perfect. I'm told this is fairl

I cracked the top 100

ranked 97th of 329 With my latest addition to my Peace Dollar collection, a nice AU 1935 S, I move in to the top 100 Peace Dollar collections in the Registry. I now have 11 more to go to complete the collection. I say complete but is it? Yes it is, but there will be up grades. I love the Peace Dollars. I see them as the underdog compared to the Mighty Morgan. I must have a thing for the underdog, after all I am a Cleveland Browns fan. When I logged on I was suprised to see that there wasn't on

Ah, those giant silver dollars!!

Yes, I remember them well. When my Grandpa, who lived in Maine, came down to visit. Those where the days, bulging, weighed down pockets filled with glistening silver. My first love affair with Morgans came back in the 50's. My grandfather lived in the state of Maine. He was a die-hard Yankee fan. Once a year he came to New York to see his famed Yankes play in the pennant. He also graced Mom, Dad and myself with a vist to our house. We then proceeded to a famous Italian restaurant somewhere ne

TEDDY BEAR!

This was the bear of my youth! Listening to the "King", sing I Wanta Be Your Teddy Bear, I figured if I had a Panada bear, I could get the girls! But, Panadas were few and hard to get. Now my small collection is growing very nice! I only have one lady to please now, and it will be Forty-Four wonderful years of marriage next month!

WALKERS?

Did someone say WALKER? The Walking Liberty half dollar was THE coin of my youth! Growing up in the 1950s and 60s, there was still a lot of walkers around for change, even though they had stopped minting them in 1947. This coin always stood out to me as something special, I really like the Eagle on the reverse. My goal is to upgrade my short set to MS-66, unless I win the lottery, then it's nothing but the best! I would think ALL coin collectors should have at least one short set of Walke

Just got back from vacation.

only from work not coin collecting I was lucky to pick up a real nice MS63 1922S and 1927D in Au for my Peace dollar collection, that should add about 300+ points to my total. Just maybe I will crack the top 100. I also picked up 4 MS69 SAE to add to my Eagles. I sold all of my raw Eagles as I had nothing left that was good enough to send in for grading. I didn't want anymore MS66 Silver American Eagles in my collection that I would just have to up grade to MS69 any way. I also picked up 7lbs

KINDA EXCITED

Did I get a winner?? My 2 2007 Silver Proof sets just arrived from the mint. one set looks as if it were the first off the press. the secons one, i noticed a flaw, or error? On Jefferson, his hair has a strand out of place. No, I am not crazy. I will try to upload a photo with this post. Some of my pics are hard to post. Dont know why. if it is not posted, I will e-mail one to anyone who asks. As far as I can tell, (I am 98% sure), it is not an actual hair in the holder. Not a crack in the cas

1999 Silver Proofs

On the way home Well, just when I think I know what to expect. My silver 1999 Proofs all graded PF 69 UC, except the dime. It graded PF 68 UC. I guess the dime wasnt up to snuff. I have another 99 silver set going in. Maybe I can get a 69 dime out of it. I will update on the other six orders I submitted. They were all received today. My 1946 PDS uncirculated mint set, 1998 & 1999 clad proof sets, 2006 clad & silver proof sets, and the 2007 clad proofs with presidents. I noticed that th
