Readying a Large Submission

large for me at least Life always seems to intrude on my coin collecting about this time every year. First are the additional budget constraints in sending a daughter back to college {I can hardly believe that a single book can cost $200 !!--must be First Day Issue bookcovers..} Secondly is that its getting cooler already and there are fewer days left before the boat goes to dry dock, so I have been spending a lot of time on the water. Add in time spent with my wife, a trip to St Louis to see

More back from NGC

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY

Five Bears ....My lastest submission was for my Panda Collection. Looking at the grades that have been posted, The China Mint must not do a very good job! Looks like the recall on toys should include coins. ....I really enjoy the Panda's, it's when you get a grade like this, you have to rethink your collecting style. The good thing it is a short set!

Yoeman's Misprint

The only time I wished for a lesser grade While checking my nickels in Yeoman's 61st Edition (2008) Red Book I found this misprint. Check out the photo attached & note the 1943P... Almost makes me wish I had a lower grade Nickel..

Peace Dollars & Morgans

Picked up a few nice ones I recently purchased a framed set of coins that contained a 1923, and 1924 Peace dollars, and a 1889, 1901-O, and 1921 Morgan dollars. A total of 5 coins, and they appear to have been sealed up in this cardboard cut-out display of U.S. Dollars since maybe the 70's. They are all toned dark grey-blue on the reverse, and toned around the diameter on the obverses. I will try to post pics of them. They appear to be either almost uncirculated, to un-circulated. I have not s

My Dime Has Come:

Full Bands are not always full... On 09/17/2007 I started entering coins in my registry. I entered 4 Mercury Dimes with pictures. I have a Long Set of Mercury Dimes, which took me several years to collect. 95% of them have full bands. I plan on adding more to the registry as I get them graded. (which will be soon)!!!

Another year passes

It's renewal time again with NGC. Another year of ?numismania? has quickly slipped by with only slight ?branching out? from my main interest (Morgan dollars). Upgrades to my Morgan set have grown into large investments, thereby making changes few and far between. The looseleaf binder shown in my February ?07 journal entry has had only 11 pages replaced with upgraded coins. I?m still constantly checking Ebay, Teletrade, Heritage, and elsewhere for the few ?affordable? upgrades I can still ho

Back from NGC

More coming Well, some of my proof sets came back, mostly 69 Ultra Cameo, but expect to get mostly 69's anyway. My Presidents were all 69 U.C with the exception of a Washington 66. It had some kind of spotting on it from the mint. I got back the following 70's: Clad Kennedy 1999-S, Clad Roosevelt Dime 1999-S, Clad Kennedy 2007-S, Clad Roosevelt 2007-S, Jefferson Nickel 2007-S, and the Clad State Quarters are Wash, Montana, and Idaho. The 1998 70 UC was the Roosevelt Dime. I got back a 70 UC

Taking that gamble again

For those who read my posting about the dog, I ignored him for now. I decided that rather than submit some Commemoratives (I still plan to, I'm just waiting for delivery of three more), that I would roll the dice and submit some State Quarters. State Quarters really are a roll of the dice, because even if one comes back PF69UC, in most, if not all cases it's still a pretty common coin, and may not even be worth the cost of getting it graded. However, I do like to gamble, and the rush from th

Coin Collecting as an Investment

I am probably not going to make any friends on this one. Recently I have read a number of journal entries refering to coin collecting as a way of investing. In my humble opinion there are any number of ways to invest money that is sure to make more profit than coins. There are alot of reasons for collecting coins, Beauty, histoical significance and many others investment is at the bottom of the list. Only the rarest coins may rise in price enough to be called investment coins and like everyt

RE: Reply to VUMC

Good advice Thank you for the photographic advice, and related photo. Was that picture taken with your loop, or just an inch away from the coin with your digital camera? Using a loop between the coin and the camera lens is a great idea that would never have occured to me had you not suggested it. I'm grateful for the suggestion. Regards, Mtn Poet

RE: Photographing Coins

Each has his own way... I use natural light when taking all of my pictures of coins. I use the macro setting on my digital camera with the lens about one inch from the coin/slab. If I want a closer image, I pull out a 30x jewelers loop and put it between the coin/slab and the lens. My opinion only, but it works for me about 95% of the time.

Photographing Coins

What's the best way? Having seen hundreds of photographs of coins on eBay (and various dealers web sites) in the past month or so, I noticed a good picture makes all the difference in the world. So I was wondering what was the best way to photograph coins? In and out of slabs? (If that makes any difference.) I realize that one can buy digital pictures of their coins when they get them graded, I would like to know what's the best way to get good pictures of our coins for we home photographe

WOW

Just checked my order My 2007 clad proof set just posted as finalized, and I did OK. The Kennedy half, the Dime, & Nickel were PF-70 UC. The Montana, Washington, and Idaho Quarters were PF-70 UC also. The rest of the set was PF-69 UC. Waiting to see what my Presidents are doing, and the 2007 silver set, with Presidents.

I kinda agree with Jim

But then--- I think Jim is right when he says that alot of people think they are investing in coins to make a profit, because as he also says, you must have alot of newer coins, and less valuable coins to make it a worthwhile venture in the profit sense. However, when coupled with cd's, t-bills, stocks, 401K's, and other small investments, can provide a nice nest egg 20 or so years down the road in addition to your other investments. We will retire in 10 years, and have all of the above, times

2001 Kennedy Proof 50C

Can ANYONE give me an honest opinion Please! what do you think about the obverse, an honest grade on the obverse of the coin. My previous post shows high resolution pics of the coins (flaws) any opinion would be welcome! If i can get an opinion, other than my on, i'll post N.G.C.'S Opinion and put up the obverse and reverse photo's in my registry set. Thanks to all that can spare the time!
