Each has his own way...

I use natural light when taking all of my pictures of coins. I use the macro setting on my digital camera with the lens about one inch from the coin/slab. If I want a closer image, I pull out a 30x jewelers loop and put it between the coin/slab and the lens.

My opinion only, but it works for me about 95% of the time.
