"SHOUT OUT" TO THE POSITIVE!!!

"Forgot to give credit where credit was due"... I posted a journal yesterday that several people read and some could relate to, but in the "heat" of the moment I neglected to close on a more positive note. After reading the two front page articles in the Dec. 17th Coin World I had to put the mag. down I was so upset thinking about how many nice "Graded & Slabbed" coins are for sale and my imagination started to run wondering how many were bought by dealers for pennies on the dollar and wer

W.K.F.

When are we collectors going to get some "Gonads" and not speak out, but "SHOUT" out?

Sick and tired of "shady" dealers... How many times has this happened to you? or how many times have you heard of this happening to others? A dealer tries to sell a coin he or she claims is mint state when at best it's an au53 and then that same coin is offered to anouther dealer and they only want to pay ef45. This happens alot. I do beleive that a person just coming into our fine hobby cant help but get a "bad taste" and may say "screw coin collecting". I just received my latest issue of Coi

Three Pennies For Three Women

How I Finished a Collection Dear Journal: Like many coin collectors, I started as a child, probably 9 or 10 years old. I can remember going over to my grandmother?s house in San Gabriel, California, and she would tell me stories about life in early California. I would stare at her in wide-eyed disbelief to hear how when she was a child, her family used to travel to see the Rose Parade in Pasadena in a horse and buggy. No internet, no ipod, no TV, no cars. On occasion, she would give me

Another Day at the Office !

Ebay, Curse You! (just kidding....I think) Can't get enough of searching for those "great buys". Hours and hours without noticing the time, page after page rolling away like waves leave with the tide, scrolling up and down, a roller coaster ride with my mouse, I clearly focus in on an interesting coin, then tumble, jump, and spring to another like an acrobatic coin collector on a trampoline while juggling two or three ads simultaneously. (All right, maybe that's going too far!) This coin coll

Hammer time!

My first foreign coin purchase. Until recently, all of my foreign coins have either been given to me by my grandmother, found in change, or given to me by family friends. As such, most of them have great personal significance. Well, several weeks ago I saw this awesome looking Russian 50 kopek coin that was a 1 year issue minted the same year my grandmother was born and I just immediately fell in love with this coin. I just looked at it and instantly wanted it. It also had the very agreeable

Finally A Word (Or Several) About ABN Plates

Or, I'm really pleased with myself! Since I am caught up with taking photos of my coins (until my submissions start coming back), I decided to experiment with some of my ABN plates I've purchases at ANR/Stack's auctions. While I have only bought a handful (although if I had unlimited funds, I could have bought a LOT!) I feel these plates fit in the grand scheme of things. I consider coins and currency just part of the whole financial and economic system of the US, along with stocks, bonds and

What a beautiful IHC proof!!!

1886 T-2 IHC Proof Star Designation This beautiful 1886 T-2 IHC proof has the only star designation for type 2's. If you look up the pop report for IHC proofs NGC is very stingy giving out their stars. The star designation means that the coin has superior eye appeal. I do have to agree with their grading on this one. The obverse and reverse has beautiful blue & purple peripheral toning. Check out my other toned IHC proofs on the NGC registry. It is a PF65BN * with a Eagle Eye Photo Seal st

What A Haul-27 Coins

finally got my submission back Exactly one month after it was posted as received I got my 27 coin submission back. I must admit to some impatience--they seemed to sit in "received" for 3 weeks--but I'd rather have the feeling that they were taking their time and really looking at the coins they get instead of just whipping through them and mailing them back. Plus I was told that the World Coin grading was a bit longer right now and throw in the fact that it was a really mixed 27 coins--and I h

Re:The US Mint Email I was Waiting For!!

Released in January??? I really doubt that US Mint will be releasing the 2008 Proof Silver Eagle in 3 weeks.2008 American Bald Eagle coins are scheduled for a release on January 15th-check out usmint.gov for an official statement. There is no way that they would release 2 high mintage products at the same month-it never happened before.

The US Mint Email I was Waiting For!!

2008, Here We Come!! Greetings!! Well, just the other day I got my notice from the mint that "Your 2008 Silver Eagle Proof subscription will be processed in about 3 weeks...." WOW!! I am entirely excited about getting this one. I also have a subscrption to the uncirculated silver eagles...which, so far as the 2007's go are NO LONGER AVAILABLE from the mint...SOLD OUT!!! Glad I got mine when I did. I have both an MS 69 and MS 70 uncirc. and a PF 70 for 2007...a pretty great start to m

1 Point increase

it looks so nice for only 1 point I recently acquired a 1977-D PCGS MS64 FS nickel. Not too bad looking, I think, and it was only a few bucks. Ok, so it wasn't my most glamorous ebay win, paying $1 plus 5 for shipping. But it is pleasant enough. But the catch is that it only took my registry score up by 1 point. I'm still happy with it, I don't think it's too bad for it's age.

I Don?t Give a VAM!!

Or do I??? VAM stands for Van Allan and Mallis, two well-known numismatists that study coins for variations, many of which cannot be seen without large magnification. Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis have written several books on coin varieties and are considered experts in their field. For Morgan Silver Dollar collectors, the variety or VAM for a coin can make a significant difference in the value of the coin. When I first heard about Morgan Dollar VAM?s, I thought it was most absurd.

New Addition

Added a 1908-S to my IHC type set. Bought this 1908-S off ebay last week. This was the first IHC minted at the San Francisco Mint. It has nice luster and blue-green toning across the feathers on the obverse.

Peace on Earth

I couldn't pass up that title. It has Peace(dollar)in it and it is that time of year. Well it is almost Christmas again!! The vote is in and counted and 2007 will not be the year that saw my Peace Dollar Collection completed. I just add a very nice 1925S in MS 62. It looks better than MS62. I now have four left to go. I think a 1927P will be the last Peace dollar of the year. It is also a MS62, but it isn't mine yet. It took me almost 2 weeks to find it, and the other three that I need have be

Has anyone ever bought a $10 platinum 2005 graded MS70 accidently??

Apart from me, and then having to tell the wife?? I should be banned from Ebay...or at least be under supervision, and I'm not talking about superman's eyes! I was going through Ebay one night, and one search turned into something else. I can be searching for a good replacement for my registry 1971 proof set (which I really need now), and end up looking up General Grant's signatures. Don't ask me how I do that...that's why the supervision. One night I found myself looking at $10 pl

A FESTIVUS MIRACLE!!

Or "Looking Forward to our annual "Santa Claws" Party Greetings and happy Festivus everyone!! It has been a little while since I posted anything ( I hear a collective "THANK GOD" ) but today I had a spare moment and thought I would check in. During the Thanksgiving holiday I spotted a Snoopy 1st Spaceflight commem coin on ebay (dated 1969) and put a bid in and subsequently lost....but it was one of those bids that deep inside after bidding I was HOPING to lose. Mystery Coin Contest Winner

And the WINNER is?..CT?s Coins!!!!! I continue to be impressed with the depth of coin collecting knowledge among members of the collectors society. The contest was to identify the mystery coin by type, date, mint mark, variety, and grade, by only looking at a picture of the reverse of the coin (see picture below). A seemingly impossible task?but the members were up to it. Thank you to all who submitted their best guess and to those that thought about it, but could not figure it out. I only

More Photos and Random Thoughts

...can't believe it's December already. Finally, I'm all caught up on images of my coins. I had saved the larger proofs (Ike dollars, Commem dollars etc.) till last because I was getting a lot of camera glare. I finally figured out to stand my little easel more upright, and move it farther away from the camera. I put the camera in Super Macro mode, and then had room to adjust the glare out of the coin. Those mirror surface proofs catch every little bit of glare. Another thing I noticed, and

Lost Control This Weekend, Went on a bender!

I bought 3 gold coins, 1 silver coin and a small gold bullion bar! I had been trying to slow my buying (read spending) on coins. And I had done pretty well this fall, until yesterday. I became the proud owner of an 1888-S $5 gold half eagle, an 1882-P $5 gold half eagle, 1856-O 25c and another 1994 1/10 GAE. Also, 2.5 grams of .999 gold to add to the bullion hoard. I thought all 3 gold coins were purchased at very decent prices! These will be the first additions to my $5 gold half eagle se

Another upgrade...

Another upgrade to my Jefferson Proof set... I was able to add another upgrade to my Jefferson Proof Set with this acquistion of a 1952 5C PF69 Cameo. I have been working at this set for a short time (is two years short?), and the upgrade opportunities seem to becoming more scarce. I am realizing that this is a long journey and, so far, I am enjoying the trip.
