A tip of the hat!

Fellow Morganmaniacs On December 14, 2007 the number of Morgan Dollar sets in the NGC registry reached 1000. It is amazing to see the number of registered collectors of these huge chunks of silver reach this milestone. For a set requiring 105 coins ( only 3 of which are less than 103 years old ) to gain 1000 followers is quite amazing. The only set with a higher number of registered sets is Silver Eagles. The Silver Eagle set requires 25 coins ( currently ) and holds no coin over 21 ye

I think I'm going to be sick......

Well after months of looking and looking I just pulled the trigger on a MS-65 1878 CC Morgan. Well after months of looking and looking I just pulled the trigger on a MS-65 1878 CC Morgan. This by far is the most I've spent on a single coin to this point. Now I can start looking for 1878 S the final 1878 Morgan I need. I love this hobby!!!!!!!

10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle Set

Collecting is a great Christmas gift! My wonderful wife bought me this set for Christmas. To All, I just made the purchase for this 10th Anniversary set! It sure did take a long time to accomplish this via the website. I tried the US Mint ordering number and it would not take my call. I hope for those who desire to add these coins to their collection, the best of luck. I procrastinated on the 20th anniversary gold coin set and really lost our! I do believe these coins will double in price be

6 months later, semester over, vacation soon!

6 months on the registry! Well, I've been here sharing my craziness with the rest of you for 6 months now. Today also happens to be the last official day of finals. My semester at college is over and I'll get to go home this weekend. Woohoo! To celebrate being here for 6 months and the end of what has been a very good semester grade-wise I added two new coins to my SAE set today. The SAEs were my first registry set so it seemed appropriate to build that set up some more today. It now has 17

Tough Decisions--Which One?

two of my top "want list" coins are available First of all, hello to all who read these and especially to my friends here at CS whom I correspond with. Another "Numismatic year" has drawn to a close and this will be my first journal entry of the new year. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable year with the hobby and that next year is even better. Okay, here's what compelled me to write again..... I have been drooling over a particular coin in a seller's ebay store for over a year. The pri

"Coin Country" and the 2008 Silver Eagles

What I saw last night.... Greetings again!! Well, last night I was scanning the channels and went to "Coin Country Network" and alas..they are already selling 2008 GRADED by NGC bullion coins. In BOTH Early Release and "Gold Label" (38 and 37 dollars respectively) this tells me 2 things.... (1) We are closer to 2008 than we all realize. ( a collective DUH is in order there..I know) (2) NGC is about to become or already is VERY busy in the grading process right now ( another DUH...

Three Peace's of the puzzle are left.

All that remains are the three d's 23,26,34. Late Sunday night I cornered a Ms 62 1927 Peace Dollar. In an auction that I led wire to wire. I had a much more exciting auction that unfortunately I came in second. It was for a 1934S in AU53 I had my eye on it for the last 5 days and bid on it a number of times. I would very much like to upgrade my XF40 34S to a AU To make my collection all AU BU not to mention the additional 905 pts. So when the auction was in the final stages even armed with my

All I Want For Christmas

please Santa, I've been good this year (kinda) Why is it when we get a little older (remember the Hudson?... not the river....the CAR!) we can't write Santa a letter and ask for something special? Well, this year I decided to try it and see if he would read my letter and wrap up a beautiful old coin for me. So I composed a very detailed letter, reminding him that I hadn't bothered him for years, but had remained a believer and a good citizen. I know it will come, I just know it will! I have f

chesaboy99 - Recut Date, 1883 Hawaii 25 Cent

Hi Guys, Nobody can come up with a percentage or round figure, for the 1883 Hawaii 25 Cent, with the "recut" date. I have heard a lot of "theories" on this item, and would like to hear more, if anone would like to comment on it. Dishonest Dealers

Here is a trick To find out if a dealer will rip you off, take a few coins that you know the value of, and maybe a couple cleaned or altered coins, and see what they offer you. If they are fair, then maybe they are worth dealing with. If they try to rip you off, then quietly pick up your marbles, and mark the dude off your list of reputable dealers. I did that with 3 dealers, all 3 tried to rip me off. Offered me $200.00 for a ag-3 1916-D Merc Dime in PCGS holder, and offered $5.00 each for NG

re: I don't give VAM!

Wham Vam..... paid more money for VAM When I first started to collect coins many years ago, I've decided to collect Carson City Morgans first because a coin collector friend told me it would be expensive, but make a good collection (and perhaps, a good investment). I was in my twenties and did not know much about coins, but decided to learn as I collect coins. Went to this coin dealer looking for Carson City Morgan. He took out this 1891-CC Morgan graded MS-62 by NGC. The label said: 1891

PF70 Silver Eagles

One of the nicest and hardest sets to aquire of the modern coins that has been produced by the U.S. Mint. The PF70 Silver Eagle Silver Dollar complete set can be only aquired by a few collectors because of the low availablity of several of the coins in a Proof 70 grade. The demand and low availability of these coins has this set priced away from the low end invester. The pre 2000 coins can range in price from $600.00 to the area of $20,000.00 for a 1995 W. I am trying to build as good of a

Complete 20th Anniversary Eagle Set - 8 Coins not 6

If NGC graded all three 20th Anniversary Eagle Sets, why are all the coins not in the competitive set listing? The complete 8 coin set of the 2006 20th Anniversary Eagles not just the 6 coins listed in the competitive sets list. This list the two coins from the A11 Gold and Silver coins the grading services have forgotten. The MS 70 Blue label is "The Rare Silver Eagle". See images under my signature set.

DELAWARE COMMEMORATIVE HALF MOVES FROM SAFE DEPOSIT TO MY DESK TOP

The "Blue Hens" Play for the National Football 1AA Championship!!! This season marries 2 of my favorite pastimes: -Numismatics and University of Delaware Football. I didn't think they would be invited to the tournament this year with an 8-3 record, but luck prevailed. And in the first three rounds, they've knocked off the number 10, 1, and 4 ranked teams successively. So next week, they get their shot at the National Championship! CONGRATULATIONS, Blue Hens!!! PF69 Silver Eagles

As nice and beautiful set of modern Silver Dollars the U.S. Mint has made since 1921. Possibly the nicest coins on today's market. The PF69 Silver Eagle Proof coins are, in the most part, available with most local dealers and on the internet. With the exception of the 1995 W 10th Anniverary, most collecters could afford the build a nearly complete set (less the 1995 W) and have a beautiful set of Silver Eagle Proofs. My Registry set was built over about one and a half years from local dealer

MS69 Silver Eagle Sets

This set is possibly the nicest set of coins at a reasonable price in todays market. The MS69 Silver Eagle set has to be the nicest set of silver dollar coins on the market except for probably the Morgan dollars. It is available in an almost purfect condition, MS69, one grade below perfect MS70. The entire set is priced at an affordable rate either buy single coins or as a complete set. They are available from most local dealers and on the internet. I have a complete set of Silver Eagles, un

RE: When are we collectors going to get some "Gonads" and not speak out, but "SHOUT" out?

You may want to add another type of seller to this list? How about the seller that sells improperly cleaned coins without mention the coin has been cleaned? This happens quite often on eBay with the raw coins, particularly with copper/bronze coins. I know I have been burned a couple of times myself. I've learned to ask before I buy. At least that way I have the dealer's written word if it ends up having been cleaned. Maybe a refund comes a little easier that way. For those that don't k

What Can I Say? I Love My Coins!!

A short entry this time... Well, the year is about over, and I have almost no regrets other than I wish I would have started collecting coins..namely Silver Eagles, much earlier. I love the Silver Eagles, and I am grateful for the fun and longing, and sometimes sadness the collection has brought me. This is my first year collecting, and I feel I have acquired some coins that many people would never get the chance to, so I feel fortunate. I have learned a lot from you all, and I feel I have

Peace Dollar MS53 and MS64 Set

The need for graded coins in the current market has almost dictated that the modern collector start and register graded sets. Shortly after starting to purchase coins four years ago, I found a complete set of Peace Dollars at a local dealer. The set had great eye appeal and looked to be in uncirculated state. I had read in several books about how the grading of coins was done and what to look for to help determine the grade. The dealer was very helpful, and I feel very honest, when describing

Shouting will do no good!!

Learn!! Educate yourself...then you can make wise coin collecting choices!! The only good shouting will do is perhaps relieve a bit of the frustration you might be feeling at the moment you realize the coin you bought was indeed cleaned or that MS63 is really an AU50. It happens alot and the sad thing is... it doesn't have to. We must all realize that when buying raw coins on the net, you are basically buying that coin sight unseen. Yes, the seller will have a picture posted but what good i

How do some Dealers Sleep at night??? I mainly collect Mercury Dimes. My wife & I used to travel to a lot of big Coin Shows, as a vacation & to look for my Mercs... 10 years ago, "mainly Dealers" talked down about what they called Slabbed Coins, so I always bought Raw ones... Now I understand why they did that. I've recently decided that I wanted to get my Mercs graded & started sending them in to NGC. The disappointing fact is... 20% of all the Mercs I sent in, came back as Im
