2000 W Library

Gold $5 and $10 dollar PR70 and MS70 commemoratives. Man I got my 2000W Library MS70 Today what a bute this one is and I feel very lucky for the price was only $3000 what a deal I wish I could find more outlets than Ebay and auctions. I wish there was a place that dealers around the nation could input their stock and then ad it online so a person could do a search and find the coin they want. I find myself wanting to go for points instead of price but price almost always rules. I sometimes w

Yes, I really need CAC certification

Try to sell your certified coins, "sight unseen" or for that matter in the "clear light of day!" There are new collectors who probably don't remember the "Good Old Days" of the hobby before the advent of "third party" grading. Back then the party of the first part, (you) the consumer, eager to purchase coins for your collection or to sell some, would approach the party of the second part, coin shop owners and coin dealers, to buy or to sell "raw coins." When selling the party of the second par

By Jove I Think I Have It...

...Come Watson, the game is afoot. Yes, I am a Sherlock Holmes fan. :-)) First, many, MANY thanks to Dean Heard. If you're wanting to take better photos, read his current journal article and check out the website from the link he provides. The site has helped me out, there were at least 3 tips that has made a difference for me. As a test, I took my 1857 Half Eagle, and tried some more photos, and the results were amazing (at least to me). I'm going to experiment more, especially on my silver

First French Settlement

Just back from grading by NGC! ..Pardon my French, but this coin is &@X*%@# BEAUTIFUL! Canada and the United States both have a rich history with the people of France. Collecting this series has been very rewarding and educational, these coins are GREAT. ..Collectors Society has a outstanding series of coins to collect and I don't understand why more members aren't involved with this set?

Coin Photography 101

Tips on coin photgraphy. If you have been disgusted with your coin photograph's, trust me you are not alone. But there is help on the way. A gentleman that is very active on the PCGS Message Board, Mark Goodman, has an excellent web site, http://coinimaging.com. It has many useful tips on not only improving your coin photographs but doing it inexpensively. My desire is to see more images in our NGC registry. I'm a visual kinda guy and love looking at coins. It does not take a $1000 SLR camera

Reeded Edge Half Dollars-The History

how did they come into being... Texas had been taken under the wing of Mexico for a while until Texas started to disobey Mexico and fought for its independence. First, the Alamo fell to a Mexican army led by Santa Anna. Then few weeks later Santa Anna was taken down at the Battle of San Jacinto, which made Texas separate from Mexico in 1836. In this year it was a time of major developments both globally and domestically. But, it was not until a few years later that Texas became part of America

Do We Really Need CAC Certification?

What is the point... The lastest thing in coin grading is CAC. They are an independent body that judges whether coins graded by third party grading companies are premium quality. Why do we need a "grading service" to judge whether a third party grading service graded a premium coin or to judge if they graded the coin correctly. I think we as coin collectors should make the distinction for ourselves to judge what is premuim quality. Besides NGC already helps us as collectors judge what is pre

Thanks To All -- Another Photo

I didn't know it was going to be this much work. Thanks to all who responded to my earlier post today. I've been trying all the suggestions, and checking out the link that was sent to me. These photos are almost seeming like work, the good side is I get to look at my coins, and I am learning as I go. I'm posting another photo, I think I'm on the right track. (Or is it I'm too picky???)

Icelandic coin collecting not for the inpatient collector

Proberly one of the few countries that has a very small amount of coins minted (that is not enough) for a population of less then 250,000 residence of this small island country in the middle of the north atlantic ocean. Another words thier just wasn't enough coins to go around. Well this is my first entry in this journal, since I first joined the collectors society over a year and a half ago. I started to collect Icelandic coins around four years ago. since only having a paupers pocket with a k

Bammer Needs advice

Sharpness verses lustre Try getting a bit more light onto the coin. Then try to refect the light away from the camara lens by adjusting the coin or the camara on a slight angle. I've been playing with coin pictures that way for awhile now. Sometimes it works out real good and sometimes not. It does work out real well when the coin has a heavy cameo.

2008 Is Here -- A Brand New Collecting Year

More pictures. First off, congratulations to all of the Registry and Journal Award winners for 2007. I've gotten many hours of enjoyment and plenty of information by looking at registry sets, and reading journal articles. I'll have more thoughts on some of the new journal articles that have been posted in a day or two, but right now I'm experimenting a little more with my digital cam. So this journal article is another request for feedback on the attached picture. While I have been satisfi

A New Use For An Awkward to Use Case

Here's A New Itea For Using PCGS Cases I don't know if anybody has the same problem as I have run into, trying to use PCGS cases. Here ,though, is a hopefully new use for those limited use cases. One day, not too long ago, I was sitting at my desk with a bunch of ICCS graded coins. Some of them are extremely rare coins. I just didn't know how to store them safely while I keep them before sending them in to NGC for re-grading, or cross grading. I have this one case from PCGS that I had bought a

A COLLECTOR?S VIEW

Remembering rewards from earlier days ... Let me start by telling you that I have been collecting coins for the better part of 30 years. I consider myself someone of average means working a white collar job in middle class America. If you are like me and my family you know first-hand that this is not an easy task. We are the ?dying breed? whose shoulders carry much of the financial burden in our great country today. One day when I was about six years old I found a Buffalo nickel and a Winged

Toned Coins

My Statehood Quarters are toning. I set down this morning to put my 2007 Statehood Quarters into my coin album. That was when I noticed that the majority of the coins that were already in the album have started to tone. The sight of these quarters has made me very excited. All of the 2000-S Silver Proof Quarters are showing brilliant blues, reds, russet, and golden toning on the reverse of the coins, while the obverse of the coins have brilliant white fields with the same colors developing onl

My 1971 Proof set at #2....I just couldn't wait

I already paid for the coin (and told my wife) Well, I'm still here, so she didn't kill me. She knows that I know that I wanted this coin, and the chance to obtain it doesn't come often (lucky for me) I just got the bill in my E-mail, and it's officially paid for; but now it's time to get on the selling side of ebay.....dang it. Anybody collect Blair's hot sauces?? :-)

A Windfall.....I cannot believe what happened to me today!!

"An old metal box in an old cedar chest..." What a great numismanic day I had...I do not have time right now to write my full account, but I will write a full inventory of the coin content later, and the full story (I don't mean to tease here, my son awaits me for bedtime ritual) I opened an old cedar chest which housed a metal box that belonged to my wifes Grandmother....and it had a SOCK full of coins, which includes...... An 1883 Morgan dollar A 1921 Morgan Dollar A 1927 Liberty Dolla

Bought a Dansco for Prez Dollars today

feeling my collecting roots... One of my favorite gifts at Christmas are always gift cards. I know that a well thought out personal gift is supposed to mean more, but for those who know about my thirst for knowledge in so many subjects--a gift card to a bookstore is a great gift for me. Today I had a "date" with my wife. We went to Annapolis Mall and enjoyed a peaceful lunch together (no kids). Later we went shopping with some of our gift cards. I stopped in the Borders and went straight to

The final coin...

72nd coin to Jefferson Proof Set The final coin was just added to my Jefferson Proof Set, the elusive 1939 Rev40. It is graded proof 67, and only 136 of this type have been graded by NGC and PCGS, and only one higher at PF67 Cameo. This is the 72nd coin in the set, but oh well, in a few months I will need to be looking for the 2008 proof and 73rd coin.

I Love It When A Plan Comes Together

My beloved PL Quarter set It feels so great to be a winner. After all the work that I have put into building this set. A great feeling of recognition, pride and respect comes out of having the best "1953-67 Canadian Pl 25 cent" collection, for this year. Even though there is still alot of work to completing this set, to make the "ultimate" set. I do feel that I am finally on the right track. The hard part is just beginning now. To get the upgrades. I'll have to get the coins from other graders

The final Peace of the puzzle

11 days past my goal but not to shabby I now have a complete set of Peace Dollars. I just obtained the last won(because it was an auction)this past Saturday and received it to day. A 1934D in MS61. This same coin was up for auction two weeks ago, I watched it all week it had an opening bid of $99. The entire week there had been no bids as the last hour of the auction approached I clicked on my EBay countdown (a pretty neat gadget, if you get a chance down load one)and sorting coins for the col

Bad Feelings about gold.

Time to order my Senior ring. The price of gold suddenly has me feeling ill... Well, last semester I battled my way through 12 hours of engineering course work in one of the hardest semesters I've ever had. I got a 4.0 for the semester. All A's, and something wonderful happened. I finally had enough hours to order my Aggie Ring. Getting this ring is everything to an Aggie. It is unchanged since 1894 and it is one of the most recognized class rings in the nation. The male ring is very large, ve
