PERPLEXED

What to do. I have a very nice 1936-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It looks completely original to me and has beautiful mint luster. I sent it to NGC for grading many months ago and it was returned in their famous body bag as having a "Reverse Wheel Mark". I was sending in another group of coins for grading and decided to send it again. This time it comes back as "Improperly cleaned". Is their any way to win in this environment? I will send the coin to PCGS and hope that I can get an hon

I Won an 1882-CC $5 Half Eagle

My first half eagle that is not a P or an S! I just won a PCGS XF40 1882-CC Half Eagle on eBay. The PCGS price guide price is $1600. This auction hammered at $798!!! This is worth 1028 Registry points. 51,017 minted. I am very pleased. The sniper missed as I was on it too!!!   Here is a differnt half eagle. This is also a low mintage coin. 1871-S, 25,000 minted.

Messages Disappear....Bummer

We may not like it when a post disappears... but it is, afterall, NGC's board!! This comes from a guy who has, himself, had posts mysteriously disappear. Guess there wasn't much mystery... NGC didn't like what I said and POOF no more post! Thats the chance I take when I post a messgae.... you do the same. So... what would make a post disappear? If enough people find a post offensive and complain, the post will be sent into the twilight zone. If the post is not numismatically related, it sh

"Going Down That Auction Highway"

I do hope my experiance is pleasant! I am just sitting here disapointed that the day is over and my package from NGC did not arrive. I am also hoping that I may get thru this post without being negative as I have promised to refrain from such. Our hobby is much too great. Having said that I would like to say one thing about the latest controversy concerning rfar"s dealings with "you know who". I enjoyed reading parts one, two and three. Unfortunately by the time I logged on again, part four wa

Some interesting News

Scouring my cedar chest hoard with a magnifying glass... Greetings!! (again...I Know!!) Well, I woke up today with a small case of boredom and decided to look closer at my cedar chest coin hoard that I recently discovered..with a magnifying glass. I THINK maybe the 1928 Peace Dollar may indeed be a 1923...it's hard to tell because the 3 and 8 on that mintage is so similar, but I am going to ship this off to NGC anyway, as it still could be a 2,000 dollar coin. In my unprofessional opinio

Bold Strike Cameo Proof a Delightful Coin

And I am not disappointed.... I just received my first 2007 American Eagle Platinum Proof One-Tenth Ounce Coin and I am not disappointed. This is the first one of these that I have purchased from the Mint and even though it was rather pricey I think I will do it again as soon as the 2008 issue comes out. The coin is a beautiful figure of Lady Liberty and the Ultra Cameo is striking to say the least. The coin is flawless and very nice to look at, and the Eagle on the reverse is very boldly stru

What are the journals really for ,not a forum for legal battles

He Needs a lawyer not the collectors society's forum He made his point with his first entry about this auction house , which i enjoyed reading about. But lost interest after the second entry because it sounded to me that he was on a mission to destroy a auction house that he had a bad experience with. He should of made it short and sweet and to the point. Now being the auction house that they are and NGC being affiliated with them, he brought the possible chance of ruining this forum for every

rfar did nothing more than share his experiences.

The removal of rfar's posts was uncalled for... I sit firmly in the camp of those who believe that rfar was only providing us with valuable information and that NGCs removal of his posts are unjustified. None of his posts asked us to act a certain way. We simply had the benefit of incorporating his experiences along with a whole host of other information in making our decision. Now I am certainly glad that all of my information set regarding Heritage auctions are not solely based on their o

I have to agree with audrop

However, I also think that NGC has a fine line that they have to walk to protect themselves. I too, am quite grateful to rfar for all of the effort that he put into describing his journey into, and out of, the abyss. After reading his postings, I came away with the impression that he has built a solid case for himself. And I'm also sure that the people from NGC who read his entries also came away with that impression before opting to pull them. However, I can state whatever I want to about h

We have a motion, we have a second -- I'm three - Motion carries!

I agree with Bruce and with Audrop. A clip below describes from NGC exactly what they say Journals are for. Well, let's examine this, shall we? 1. Share your collecting journey with other members. Ok, buying and selling is certainly part of that journey. Sometimes, that can have pitfalls, and others can learn from that. I for one am eternally grateful to have had the chance to have read what I did. 2. Share your experiences and thoughts. Again, I think rfar did that very well. He

My First Trip to a Real Live Coin Shop

A GREAT Time!! As I mentioned in one of my numerous journal entries in the past few days, I had never been to a REAL coin shop before, so I planned on going to one tomorrow. But I mentioned this to my wife over a very delicious breakfast of sausage and eggs, and her response was "I didn't know that! Lets finish up eating and we'll go." So, we did finish eating and off we went to the Downtown Sugar House area of Salt Lake City where there is a coin shop I have passed a billion times named

Did rfar go too far?

Is something amiss? Just wanted you to know, rfar, that I wrote to NGC expressing my displeasure with their removing your journal entries describing your 'experience' with a well-known auction house. How are we ever going to make this hobby more 'user friendly' if we are not allowed to make people aware of dealers, auction houses, and others who do not cater to us, the collectors, who keep them all in business? I enjoyed rfar's journal entries and appreciated the 'heads-up'. Rest assured I w

Response: Heritage. I'd love to hear from others.

I'm the guy who started all this ... ... only to find that my 4 journals have been deleted by NGC. I find it interesting that the official grader of the ANA removed my journals about one or so hours after my last contact with the official auction house of the ANA. Coincidence? Maybe. NGC stated this afternoon that journals are for sharing experience and knowledge and that is what I thought I was doing. They also stated that it should be a diary of my collecting experience. That is what my

My Heritage Auction Experience Jounals #1, #2, #3 & #4

NGC has removed my journals ... I received an email from NGC this afternoon stating that they have removed my journal entries on my Heritage experience. I was informed that the journals are a place to share experiences and knowledge and that NGC's action was not one in defense of Heritage. That's funny. I thought that was exactly what I was doing. NGC also said that I should not have multiple threads on a single topic. My journals have been posted for more than a week (I believe) with a fair

My sincere thanks to rfar for the TIME and ENERGY and ENDURANCE dealing with Heritage and for sharing his experience. I truly can't thank this member and this customer enough for taking the time an effort of posting what sounds to me like quite an ordeal. Personally, I've wanted to begin selling some coins, and I was overwhelmed by all the ins and outs of the process of starting to sell on eBay, listing items, getting good images, creating listings with IMPACT, accepting PayPal, shipping,

10th Anniversary Platinum Eagles

Good news, for a change! Well, I got a package today from the "Fulfillment Center" (read: US Mint) - the third recently. I've been unable or unwilling to open them because I didn't know what was IN them. As some of you may recall from my earlier journal entries, the Mint previously did what it probably THOUGHT was a good thing: it delivered the 10th Anniversary Platinum Eagle Sets a week EARLIER than even scheduled from the backorder date. What did that mean to me? That meant that sin

Contemplating my First Trip to a Coin Shop

The internet has spoiled me.... Hi again!! OK, I'll be back to work tomorrow, so if you all can just bear with me with ONE MORE journal entry, I promise I'll lax up a bit here as I will have a new JOB to go to!!   Anyway, I have never been to a real live coin shop. Yeah, it even surprises me,too!! But nope, never been and I think that is unfair to me as I miss out on the face to face social aspect of collecting, and unfair to the local economy as the local coin shop misses ou

Looking Forward To A Great 2008

...8 coins to go for my Franklin FBL set. I'm really looking forward to 2008. I've started off with a bang already, as January isn't even over yet. My main goal for the year is to finish my Franklin FBL set. I've 9 empty slots in the set, and I have one coin on the way I won in a Teletrade auction. So that leaves 8 slots to go, I really want to finish the set this year. The downside to this is I decided to not do the Proof Franklins. However, I might buy a 1957 Proof, as I am comtemplating a F
