Can you find great coins at a local estate auction

Is it true, its only money, and did I make a good deal I have attained my first coin auction this past week. The collection was from an local estate. The coins smelled like they were kept in the basement for 50 years or so. The auction was with a local auction house. I spent $1480 on coins and $461 in grading fees. I was able to obtain an 1883 CC GSA coin, and 1880 CC Morgan silver dollar, and a 1993 Bill of Rights 3 coin set. I won several 1960s proof sets and some common dated Morgan Dollars

Into the submitting fray once more

I've been away from it for too long... Well, I decided not to wait for my 5 free submissions coupon for renewing my membership. I figure that I'll just use it later. For now, I've just finished packaging (and making sure that the check was in there this time) my latest submission which is: 1) 2007-W American Eagle Silver 2) 2008-W American Eagle Silver 3) 1993-S Thomas Jefferson Commemorative 4) 1994-S Capitol Bicentennial Commemorative 5) 2004-P Thomas Edision Commemorative 6) 200

Guess y'all are stuck with me for another year.

Sorry, everyone. I just paid my Membership Renewal Now that that's done, I guess I will wait until my coupon arrives in the mail before making any submissions. I've got quite a few things to pick and choose through between now and then. Do I go with my 2007 and 2008 American Eagle Silver Proofs, or do I try to finish getting my Statehood Quarters graded? (Kind of leaning toward the AEs on that one. Almost makes more sense to buy quarters somebody else already paid to have graded, but that d

The Excitement Continues!!

Finally got my 2008 Proof Silver Eagle, new job!! Greetings again folks!! Well, the anticipation and longing for the mail I had on MLK Day has now been long forgotten as yesterday my 2008 Silver Eagle arrived, and I have to say, the mint has done a remarkable job with these proofs as long as I have been ordering them these past 2 years. The detail and...hell, PERFECTION of the proofs are just remarkable. I am surprised that not more people are interested in them, seems like since the 20

Wish List (Plan) 2008

Paul Morphy vs. The Duke of Brunswick, 1858 Chess is a war game, the ultimate goal of which is to force the surrender of your opponent. To be successful a player must be goal-directed and purposeful: short and long term strategic goals achieved by tactical play. All of this is held together by a "plan". I have only recently discovered how random, and plan-less my coin collecting activity was. I would buy coins of mixed grades and as opportunities arose. If a coin appealed to me from a dealer'

Happy MLK Day!!

A snow day for me....and some transitions goin on!! Greetings again!! Woke up to a HEAP BIG amount of snow today, and having a GRAND TOTAL of 4 vacation days left this year, I decided to take today off and snow blow the drive and walk. It's not the same being home though without the mail being delivered today..and the mints web page down, but this might just be what the Dr. ordered for my numismania...a day off from the longing and excitement MIGHT just get the blood pressure within "pr

PCGS website is back on line

Have anyone lately been trying to put PCGS graded coins in your registry only to become rejected? Last week I added a PCGS first strike SE in my registry. Then later on that day I got a Email that the registry rejected the coin due to can't verify. So I went to the PCGS website to check the verification myself only to discover that the website is offline. (Maybe PCGS is using the same service provider as the USMINT "LOL") Every morning I been checking to see if it was up and running be

My New Registry Goal

going straight to the top!! well, maybe not the top--but hopefully the first page. When I started my Walker short set I had a simple goal (so I thought) just finish the set with coins that met a certain strike criteria and not be concerned with the grades or points. I love a fully struck Walker, it is my favorite coin design. In fact, the use of the design on the SAE is what re-energized my interest in coin collecting. My criteria was: full skirt lines on the left leg ( a must),sep

Not JUST a Hobby

It's my life I was just sitting here this morning reading the journals and sipping my coffee. I am continually amazed at the various entries people send in. Some write of their collecting experience. Others offer advice or share good and bad experiences with the mint or the grading services. Yet others enjoy the timeless art of dealer bashing. I find it all quite entertaining. It enhances my overall collecting experience. Personally, I find myself excited about traveling out to the u

"Shady Dealers Getting Religon???

"Price Of Poker" Goes Up With Honesty... I am pleased to report that I have seen one advertisement that tells it like it is concerning the 2007 W unc. I am glad I have two of these on back order with the mint at $21.95 each and will tag along on the same order number as the Bald Eagle Set.( by not wanting to spend an extra $4.95 on shipping may turn out to be a bad thing) I guess i

The New Guy on the Block

The Greatest Honor You May Give a Person is to Ask There Opinion Just recently I got interested in and started to collect American Silver Eagles.I thought this would be a good way to get my 5 year old son interested in saving and collecting coins.I am hoping this will be a good financel choice, if not then it will teach him about saving and collecting.Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.Thank You

Thanks For The " HELP!! "

Many Thanks To The Collector's Society Members A very heart felt "thank you" to all the society menbers who have given me their opinion and advice. Please if any one has more advice, please give it to me. Even if I have already made my decisions, the info. is always welcome. The reading is good too. Collecting, for me, seems to be a solitary life. When I talk to "interested" friends and family they always spur on my excitement or should I say passion, for the hobby. However, that being said, v

Cross Grading

My Suggestion This is for jayh, about sending in his coins fron ICCS for cross grading. You should be able to submit the coins with the stipulation that if they do not grade at least as high as they already are, then they will be returned un touched. They will still charge you, but you wont run the risk of losing your present grade. The few coins that I have had cross graded, have came back the same. Two 1942/41 Merc Dimes, and a 1921-D Merc Dime. Not sure what the value of your coins are now,

HELP!!

Cross grading ICCS coins to NGC Help! I need some advice. I have never sent any coins in yet for grading. I am nervous and worried. I have asked questions to NGC as well as to members. The water is till too cold. I keep pulling back at the last moment. You see, my problem is that I have recieved just enough conflicting advice that I am too scared to commit some high valued coins for grading, when, in my eyes, I'm going to do something wrong and I won't have the orrigonal graded value after the

Copenhagen Mint And The Icelandic Coins Of 1922-1940

Friend or Foe of the coins of Iceland While examining one of my newest addition to my Icelandic coin collection I thought of a few of the other 1 and 2 kronur Brass coin's that I either owned or looked at, and came to one conclusion or at least a thought came to mind. The Copenhagen Mint In Denmark produced some of the worst quality coins in modern times for one of its possessions (Iceland) I have ever seen, not that i have seen a lot of coins from around the world. Its just that it seams that

There here...they came...2007W $50 Platinum 10th Anniversary

Here is the front of both coins I need to get better with the camera. Next time I will opt out for NGC to photograph them. NGC was great with there shipping back to me and the handling of the box. I wish I could put them back into the wood box they came into. It is so great looking. I love the perfection of the box (and the coins) HAPPY COLLECTING!!!!!

RE: "More on Shady Dealers"

Dont mean to complain, just trying to help with the hobby I LOVE Looking back at the few journals I have posted in retrospect, I sound as if I have a bad attitude toward dealers in general. This is not the case at all even if it appeared as such. I have known many dealers and collector/dealers that were as good as gold. They have gone out of their way to help, teach and share their knowledge freely. Having said that, it bothers me, maybe more than it should, the fact that some are not as hones

RE: "More on "Shady Dealers"...

Knowlege is important!! My comment made about the mint suspending sales on the 2007 W Silver Eagle due to packaging issues was from an article in the 1/14/2008 issue of Coin World. The article is entitled "Mint resumes '07 Unc. Eagle Sales after month-long hiatus". The article reads "The U.S. Mint resumed taking orders Dec.21 for the Uncirculated 2007-W American Eagle 1-ounce silver dollars a month after sales because of difficulty in obtaining sufficient packaging ?? My 2007 Presidential Proof Set has Arrived!!

Also, I looked a bit closer, and have a 1928, not 1923 Peace Dollar... Yesterday was a rather long day for me. Worked until 6 o'clock, and of course my last call was 40 miles from home. I won't even MENTION the traffic ( ooops I just did!!) BUT as a arrived home, I had one of the nice rectangular cardboard packages from " Fulfillment Center" waiting for me, and all of the sudden the job and traffic were all but forgotten about...for a few moments anyway... Nice 1828 13 star Classic Half Cent

I like these about uncirculated half cents. I acquired this NGC 1828 13 star Classic Head Half Cent AU55BN recently. This series is really undervalued with very low mintage. Check out my other registry sets. I have almost as much fun photographing my coins as collecting them. Looking forward to seiing your images as well.
