"Auction Letdown" & NGC Surprize!

Gave my coins away at Teletrade But an early Christmas from NGC Several posts ago I mentioned that I was going to try the auction route to get rid of a few extra Walker & Franklin halves that I had in holders other than PCGS & NGC. Well they went on the "block" Mon. Feb. 11th and total funds realized were $1650 on Numismedia value of better than 4-K. I dont know what happened because all the previous prices for the same peices as recently as late Jan. should have brought $2500+ All the

The 1881 Hawaii 5 Cent piece isn't very eye appealing, but sure demands an extremely high price tag. These patterns were struck years after the date 1881, and never went into regular circulation. When looking at this coin, and comparing it with the popular silver issues of 1883 (Dollar, 50 Cent, 25 Cent, Eighth Dol, 10 Cent), you will observe a dull, lack of luster appearance. This characteristic, along with 3 serious errors in the casting of the dies, made this coin unattractive to King David

10th Anniversary Good News!!!!

Platinum is now $2005.00 Mint put hold on sales I was at the mint site today, first time in a while and read this under the 10th anniversary platinum set: Due to the increasing market value of platinum, the American Eagle 10th Anniversary Platinum Coin Sets are temporarily unavailable while pricing for this option can be adjusted; therefore, no orders can be taken at this time.   What an increase since we bought them. !!HOLLY MOLLEY!!

.Most awesome submission return! ..The quality of work that NGC and the U.S. Mint produce can be said in one word OURSTANDING! This was the largest submission that I've every submitted to NGC. The results were just AWESOME! I submitted forty coins and twenty-five percent returned perfect MS-70!!! ...I know, some of you are saying it's just bullion. I say, it's BULLION ART! I'm sure when people started collecting Morgan dollars some just said it's only silver. Just think if your Great Great G

My 1971 Proof Set Submission was a winner!

Got my first star designation, too. Wow! I'm really excited. Here's the lowdown: 1c - PF67RDC (Not great, but not shabby for the time period) 5c - PF69UC (Outstanding! And 502 Registry Points, too!) 10c - PF69 (Not too shabby) 25c - PF69 (Again, not too shabby) 50c - PF68* (A 69 would've been better, but my very first star) All in all, I'm quite satisfied.

RE. Broken Heart

No End In Site Well i got my coins from the post office this morning. And called NGC and explained to them why i don't agree with the grade and they said to send it in for a regrade and that the scratches are polishing marks that only can be seen with a 15x power loop or higher they told me that they use a 5x loop well i told them that they may appear as scratches not polishing marks as i only can tell with a 17x loop ,now they will charge me another 32.00 dollars for a regrade plus shipping a

Set refined again - AUS only.. GB removed

Now it's just Australia's Sovereigns, including one special 2005 150th Anniversary All I need is a nice grade (XF45 or better) Type 1 Sovereign, preferably 1855. Hopefully NGC will make me a real area for this to go in, it could be getting me POINTS ! My errors and other coin set is now a GB New Coinage Type Set - So far just Half Sovereigns. 3 coins, and thus it's already complete.. depends if you count a very rare 1818/7 overdate variety. http://www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/

CONFESSIONS OF A MASSOCHISTIC COLLECTOR

Self-inflicted Punishment Multiple Times Per Year. I have an extensive numismatic library, including auction catalogs and fixed price lists. This comes in quite handy when researching a particular coin or series, as well as just casual reading. Four or five times a year, I grab a stack of catalogs and lists from 9 or 10 years ago, and look through them for coins that interest me today. This activity invariably leads to woeful moans and outright cries of agony, as I stare at some great coin

Waiting on a gamble

I don't know why I submit some of the things that I submit. I consider it kind of a challenge. I have a submission in Quality Control right now. 5 coins. A 1971 Proof Set. Now a lot of people would ask why on Earth would I want to do THAT. The truth is, if I get good grades on them, the Pop numbers are so low that I might have something with a little value. The odds of having something with a little value? Slim to none. I don't believe that the 70s were exactly the high point of Proof quality

RE. My heart wasnt broken

Stunned The 1925 1 Krona i sent to NGC and got the grade of MS-62 that floored me , this is a god like coin MINE compared to the one that is graded a MS-64 By NGC. I know the man that has this so called 64 and I have high grade pic's of the coin and in the NGC holder. Well if his is a 64, mine is a 69 which, will never happen for this type of coin from this year 1925 1 Krona. I missed the post office by 5 minutes so i am going to have to wait till tomorrow morning. I'm hoping its a error i

Falling in the Ranks

I need to make more submissions!! So I took a close look at my registry this morning and realized I have slipped in the rankings somewhat, and I do have several "raw" coins just waiting to be submitted. But, like a deer in the head lights, I find myself both financially and mentally unable to submit any coins right now. I am not "poor" but I do have some credit cards that I built up some charges on....for COINS that I am paying down right now. So, I am planning on making a large submis

In need of some "Gold Sovereign" info?

Are the following worth getting "Slabbed" I have never been much on coins from outside the US but with gold above $900 and acting as if this is just a "stopping off point" before heading to $1000 and beyond I have 17 British Sovereigns I purchased years ago for $75 each. At the time this was about "melt". My question is, sending these in to NGC will cost $25 each which is a fair chunk of change. If anyone has any info as what would be the best route to take, I sure could use the help. I was to

JAMES MADISON

Just received from NGC. ..Well I now have the fourth coin for 2007! When I started this set it looked like it would be just one year type set. Congress passed a law and President George Bush signed it, requireing the U.S. Mint to take In God We Trust off the edge and put it on the obverse or reverse ASP. When I was in the U.S. Air Force and later Civil Service, when I was told ASAP, that meant have it done yesterday. The Mint says ASAP means 2009. ..The Monroe coin to be released first this

Coin Vault - it wasn't a well kept secret

Gone but not? This was actually announced in January, though apparently not advertised on their shows. If it was in the mainstream news, why they would not make it known on the shows is beyond me, but whatever. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/jan/08/shop-home-cease-broadcasting-march-about-200-jobs-/ I actually had bought from them before, when I could get prices right. There were odd things that were on their web site for instance that may not have made the show, that were bargains.

So Long Coin Vault?

Did I hear that right? One of my favorite shows to watch on TV is "The Coin Vault" on the Shop at Home channel. Now, I have never oredered anything from there as I usually just get what I want from the mint or auctions, but I find it amazing to sit and stare at the coins they present, and the hosts are usually very entertaining, I have a good time with that show. But, last night, somewhere in between the "proof silver statehood quarter" and the "BU Morgan dollars" during a break, the Pr

Taking a Closer Look...

The details are amazing!! Greetings!! I had a few free moments yesterday and I realized I had not really admired my bald eagle commems ( skinny chickens) for a while, so I took them out of their boxes (Ihave the proof and uncirc) and took a really close look. AMAZING!! The detail on the obverse and reverse are something to behold. The feathers on the eagle soaring, and the land at about 4 o'clock seem to really stand out. The skinny chicken on the reverse and the seal are just

Grades from one of my submissions

Still got two more submissions in, and one going in the mail tomorrow, so maybe I'll do better next time. I was disappointed in my grades, overall. I got two PF68UCs, which I definitely was not expecting. But, I'll try to figure out where I went wrong and see if I can make some adjustments in how I select coins for purchase. My Grades were: 1993 S JEFFERSON S$1 PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO 1994 S CAPITOL S$1 PF 68 ULTRA CAMEO 2004 P EDISON S$1 PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO

My heart has been broken

I thought that my 2008 ASE was the prettiest coin I'd ever bought from the Mint Alas, I got the grade this morning. PF68UC. What did I miss? At least my 2007 ASE got a PF70. That's a not-so-small consolation. When the coins come back to me, I'm going to spend a lot of time looking for defects on it. I also wonder if it got a low grade due to the fact that there isn't yet a large number of examples to form a decent baseline. I'm thinking that I may just wait a few months, and then ask them to r
