Fallen off the Wagon in Florida

Thought I was over the "Hump" 'till Hump Day hit me... I thought I was on my way to recovery and then the "monkey" tapped me on the sholder and said "Dont foget there is an auction tonight" I then said no I'm gonna be good, I have family and friends who are counting on me. The "monkey" responded, "It sure wont hurt to read the menu, just dont order any food" I again said no, as I am still weak from this last weekends "binger" but then I had a "momentary lapse of reason" and logged on to take a

New Mexico Statehood Quarter

Absolute beauty in the design's simplicity I got my Clad Proofs in the mail yesterday, and finally got around to examining them. While all of the designs are beautiful, the New Mexico one really stood out to me. For those who haven't seen the coin yet, it's basically a topographical (I assume) relief of the state with the Sun symbol overlaid on top. Absolutely striking, I think. One of the top designs from the series, I think, along with others such as Nevada, Colorado, and Missouri. We should

The Silver Ride

After adding $0.70/oz today, silver is up another $0.40 on the world market. Have I mentioned that I like silver as much as I like gold and platinum? On June 30, 2007 silver was at $12.30/oz. and at this moment silver is at $19.11. A 50% increase. When it gets to $50/oz I may sell some. But some say it is on its way to $100/oz.

Proof Sets & Mint Sets Endangered Species?

Should these be broken up & slabbed or left intact? I was reading in the latest issue of a major numismatic publication that in order to sell single proof coins and even rolls of proofs that thousands of these sets are broken up annually. One firm reported that they break up 150,000 to 160,000 mint and proof sets every year. Another said they break up 5,000 to 10,000 sets at a time. This is just two companys. If this is done across the industry then should we keep our sets intact? I

Gold Buffalo Proofs

Once in a while it all just falls into place! The American Buffalo: A symbol of freedom for all Americans and a symbol of strength for Native Americans. What could be a more appropriate design for these rare 24kt brilliant gold coins? With the proud Native American featured on the obverse and the American Buffalo on the reverse, this coin symbolizes all of what America is. I started this journey with the purchase of a Proof Gold Buffalo from the mint in 2006. I sent it to PCGS for grading

"Addicts Galore"

Boy do I feel alot better! I cant beleive the therapy provided by the multitudes of fellow addi----, collectors in this narrow slice of internet heaven. In my spendings over the last couple of days the ill feelings have disapated and I feel like a new person. I do have one more confession to make. I left out the attempt I made to apmex.com who have great deals on PCGS & NGC gold. They are closed on the weekend and I got in too late this afternoon to call as I have some questions to

I Think I'm Cured!!!

Made it through the Monday night Auction buying only one coin! If I'm not cured I'm well on the way to recovery. I owe this one to audrop as not being an avid Morgan Dollar collector I would never have "read the menu" tonight in the silver dollar section. Dont get me wrong, I love Morgans, how could anyone not love those big beautiful silver "cartwheels". I really have not met a coin I did not like. Its just there is so darn many of them and with all the "Vams" I dont need to start anou

Another Coins Anonymous Session CAS

I laughed until I cried Reading you guys' and gals' comments about the disease, I thought to share my obsession with you. Usually at Christmas I prepare a gift for a young blind friend. The gift consists of a whatsoever assortment of coins, pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves and now a variety of four dollar coins, Presidential, Susan B.s, Sacs and Ikes for novelty sake. Then I throw in maybe fifty dollars so in $1 bills. Ray loves his gift and looks forward with great joy to receiving h

What's all the hub bub, Bub?

I guess I misunderstood the term 'empty-nesters'! What's the big deal? I keep reading the horror stories from my compatriots here in the Collectors Society about hoping that their significant others don't find out about their addiction and its expense. As Alfred E. Newman used to say 'what me worry?' My take is: 1) you only live once, 2) Uncle Sam won't let us starve, and 3) who needs a house anyway? My wife is a nest-builder with the best of them and I admit it is nice to have a place for

Numis MANIA is in THE AIR!!!

AND.......I Got my 1996 Silver Eagle!! WOW!! Is it the promise of 1200 dollars coming from the feds? OR newly cashed income tax checks? OR the promise of SPRING just weeks away? I think we have all been smitten here with great case of NUMISMANIA!!!!!!! and it is a GRRREAT thing!! I have been on a coin hoarding binge like nobody's business, and I see lots of posts in the journals shadowing the same feelings. I have been on a tear lately acquiring more coins in the past week than I h

Justification Needed...

for explaining to the wife. Received our tax refund last week so I decided to buy a few coins. Even that thought was a no-no since the wife said to put it in the bank! Well, I didn't heed those oh so wise words and how I wish I had (mostly anyway!). I've dropped about $800 in the last week. Before you get the totally wrong idea, I had her blessing on some of the coins. I'm trying to put together two new Signature Sets so off I went to hunt down coins for these sets. I found plenty and d

Starting Up My Registry

First Coins Entered! I just started my 2 registries today....Modern Commemorative Proofs and Silver Eagle Proofs. I have quite alot of coins for both but still working on getting the ones that I am missing... the early eagles and the comms from the eighties. Its a slow process because of the price of getting them and then getting everything I already have graded. I can only do a few at a time. The coins I listed today were the 2006 Ben Franklin coins...both PF-70, 2001 Buffalo...PF-69, and

On A HUGE Bender

Speaking of addicts Holy criminey, I spent a grand yesterday just upgrading my pennies and one nickel. Oof. I did buy one Silver Eagle. Kind of a banner day, so to speak, as I have been trying to secure the best Lincolns for my wedding year, birth year (really tough), high school graduation, kid's birth year, etc. There are a couple that I won't likely get unless goos fortune opts to strike me from the heavens (unlikely but possible). You know the one's I am talking about where there are

I guess WKF and I share the same malady

I call this particular little affliction Coin Collection Deficiency, or CCD. The condition is called a Deficiency because let's face it, people who suffer from this particular "ailment" never have enough Coins. For the longest time I thought that I might be alone out there, but a recent Journal posting showed me that I'm not, and to the author I am very grateful. Question is, what should be done about it? Should there be a group created where CCD sufferers could meet and discuss their affl

"Confessions of an Addict"

Try as I may, I have been unable to stop... I think many of you can relate, at least I hope so. Ever since I have become somewhat "computer savy" and have been "turned on" to the internet auction scene my coin collecting habit has become borderline scary. It seems almost every other day I'm buying something "numismatic wise" Friday night I was unable to log on to the mint web site due to a glitch with my password. I had read in someones post that only tenth ounce platinum eagles were still bei

I got the "Skinny Chickens"

Do I or Do I not..... Do I or Do I not ....open the box. One box has the 3 coin Bald Egales set. Second box has a set and all the other coins that were issued (i got 5 of each). I want to look at them and show them off but I also want them graded. I know NGC said they were not going to give the coin set a special label, but, come on, 25,000 set deserves a special label. I keep hoping they will change there minds, but I know there not. I will just keep them sealed and wait a while l

July,1969 First Man on the Moon

I am HOPING for a Moon Landing 40th Anniversary Commem next year!! I have always been intrigued with the early days of the space program. One of my favorite movies is "October Sky" and another favorite hobby of mine was model rocketry. I used to always watch the space events as a young boy ( the last I remember live as a boy was the Apollo/Soyuez mission in the mid 70's where USA and USSR docked in space for the 1st time) If I am able I catch the shuttle take-offs and landings, too.

Re:I got the "Skinny Chickens"

that's a good idea for know Your right, it is a good idea to leave the mint box sealed for now, you never know if NGC will change their minds about the 3pc Bald Eagle set. With my luck the day I can't wait any longer and I open the box, NGC will put some news flash about summiting Bald Eagle 3pc sets "LOL" Happy Collecting!

A Bad Cold and Getting my 86 MS 69 Silver Eagle

I wish I could HEAL already!! Greetings! Well, on Friday during my battle with this nasty virus that has plagued me ( has NOW moved to my head) I recieved my 1986 MS69 Silver Eagle!! It really was a "silver lining" to an otherwise awful day. Being the "new guy" at work makes it so that I don't DARE take time off..and my cold seems to be getting worse...so I think I will HAVE to take Monday off. Anyway, back to the "silver lining" I put the coin in my registry and to my amazement it y
