Victory at last!

I have it! Last week VUMC409 noticed that I was going to try and build a set of Australian Lunar dollars in MS69. Since he wanted to sell several 69s that he had after upgrading to 70s he offered the coins to me. Being the great guy that he is, he gave me a really great offer for buying all 6 of the coins that he had. What he didn't know was just how good the timing of this was for me. I had actually been thinking about buying 2 coins for that set (1 of which was among what he was offering)

Doing my part to stimulate the economy with my Rebate check

Just don't anybody tell me wife... Packed up another submission. It seems like I've got an overabundance of raw coins that are decent grading candidates. Too many for my own good, I think. I thought, well, I'm expecting my tax refund next week and my ill-conceived (to my mind, anyway. I'm not an economist, but common sense tells me this is a bad idea) rebate check in May, so I can go ahead and releive myself of a few more of these raw coins and convert them into graded ones. My wife will proba

RE: A very disturbing thought or two

I was around during the last great silver/gold rush. My parents owned a coin shop at the time and it was an extremely turbulent time when you were behind the counter. You didn't have time to actually do what you were there for--Deal in coins! You were essentially a bullion depository. There were people lined up going out the door and down the street carrying everything with them from coins to jewelery to silverware to anything else they even thought might contain silver or gold and this was al

A very disturbing thought or two

the silver melt is on A few thoughts on Silver coins and the results of this second round of melt fever. Back in the early 1980?s (?) the Hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market and the result was one of the most drastic rushes to melt silver coins that we have seen since the civil war. The number of Mercury dimes and Roosevelt dimes, the Washington quarters, and the Walking Liberty and Franklin halves that were melted for the silver content is staggering to conceive. Along with tho

Joining the 10K club

I finally made it! I finally made it to 10,000 registry points! Yay! This is one of those nice landmarks. I also just achieved an all time high in the overall rankings. Over half of my points are concentrated in 4 sets (Silver Eagles, Prez Dollars, Lincoln Cents, Statehood Quarters) with over 1000 points each but I have other up and coming sets.

Been out of touch for a couple of weeks and discovered something today

You guys out here are the greatest! Today I've seen two distinct examples of what a decent, caring bunch of people we have here in this group. First off, I received an e-mail from someone who shall remain nameless, checking up on me to make sure that I was OK. (I am, by the way, just off doing some other things) Nameless somebody, thank you again. That really meant a lot. And then when I get on the site this evening, I see a whole series of Journal entries offering friendship and moral suppo

I Robbed my "Batman Bank" and Found it is Very hard to Spend Coins

I looked very intently upon each Quarter... The economy has hit me right here at home. Now, I am not "broke" but I have started a new job a few weeks ago, and due to the time of year I have been short of hours lately. This will change in April/May when people turn on their AC's and find they don't work...I mean LOTS of people at THE SAME TIME...but I digress... Anyway, finding my bank account a little strapped due to lack of hours, my Batman Bank peered at me in a menacing manner as I

WOW!! I Just Won The Lottery

I Finally hit the jackpot with this coin The NGC gods finnaly came through for me. I just recieved my last submission back from NGC today. Most came back pretty much as expected, BUT WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE? A little gift. There could be no better grade for this coin. With only a population of two in this grade out of approx. 500-600 coins graded by all the grading services. I recieved a PL-67 ultra cameo for my Canada 1955 PL quarter, that I submitted. Finally, I got one. Besides where this take

A little bit of this and a little bit of that ( thanks H.L.)

"You pays your money yous takes your chances" As far as I'm concerned there are already to many rules, let's not make any new ones. I will make my sets and or collections how ever I want to. We all paid our membership dues. We weren't invited to join or screened by the other members. It is an individual decision to join or not. In the passed I have criticized other members for their competitiveness and other things and I was wrong. There is a place in the society for all of that. I got a littl

The results are in on two of my four invoices!

Overall, I don't think that I've done too bad. Of the twelve coins on the two invoices, two of the coins were body bagged and of the other ten The high lights are; a 1962 franklin half, with some nice toning, that graded Proof-67 Cameo. a 1956 Washington Quarter that graded Proof-67* (My first Star!) I had a 1967 SMS Kennedy that I thought would get a Cameo for sure but it got body bagged instead for being scratched. Oh Well. The other four weighed in at rather unspectacular Proof 66's o

Our Goals, Our Commitments And Our Promise...

The "Golden Rule" Still Works To pursue this hobby where we can be a teacher but yet always be willing to listen and learn.   To commit to never put ourselves and/or our collections above anyone else. To promise to always be there for our brother or sister who is in the hobby with comfort, praise and advice, and hopefully we never lose sight of the passion that started us down this Numismatic highway, with that very first coin. No matter what "Higher Power" any of you may or

The Registry

I would like to add my thoughts I am relativly new to Collectors Society...Feb 2008...and I never have thought of the Registry as some kind of competitive game. I just thought it a really cool place to showcase my collection to as many people as possible ( The internet is wonderful). It is really enjoyable checking out other peoples' coins and reading the little tidbits of information about each one. Even though I have been collecting coins...Modern Proof Comms, Proof ASE, and Annual Silve

The Registry as a Community

When we're at our best... I collected raw coins for about a year before I bought my first "slabbed" coin. Shortly after I bought my second slab (first NGC coin) I tracked down the NGC homepage and then started seeing things about the registry. I initially thought that this place was some kind of super competitive environment where only people with $100,000+ invested in their collection should even dare venture for fear of being laughed to scorn and humiliation. When I started looking into it

Misunderstood

Let me try to set the record straight.. After reading some of the journal entries in response to my 'Points, points, may I make a point?' I had to go back and read my journal entry again. No where in my entry could I find where I was discrediting a set with only one coin (every set starts with one coin!) I copied and than pasted my original entry into this journal so it would be word for word. My points: 1) No matter how many sets a particular coin is in you only get credit for the poi

I Think That I've Found A True Rarity !!!

And the wait is driving me Crazy!!!! For a change, it?s one that someone else may want also. Up until now I've been finding VAM's in my local dealers Junk box but this time I got VERY LUCKY!!!!!! There is nothing else that you can call it but sheer, dumb luck!! It's been one thing to find a VAM that was worth 200 or 300 dollars. With those (for the most part) I know what I've been looking for. This time I bought an 1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar from my local coin shop. I bought it because I tho

Speaking for the little guy

I've been pondering this issue for two days now. I've read the posts and taken in the opinions; thought some, stewed some, pondering more, written down some thougts. Here is a summary of all that "mental" work. From what I've read, most of the respondents about the registry points/coins in set/completion/etc topic believe there should be some sort of Society governed restrictions/guidelines, if not just some sort of self-control and personal management. Speaking for the little guy, I must

One left.

Just 1 left before the set is complete. Even though I really probably shouldn't have (I've bought way too much lately) I saw a 2000 Millenium Set MS69 Silver Eagle going for a pretty nice price and I decided to go for it. Now I have 23 coins in the set, with the 1994 and the 2000 MS coins ordered. The only one left is the 1996 coin and then the set will be complete. Edited to add: Apparently I got one of the lower prices achieved recently; about $101.50 after shipping.

Subdivided Registry

Getting 1 registry account to represent 2 different (separate?) groups of coins. When I originally joined the registry I was joining just for my own fun and to list my own coins. I started with 1 set, my eagles. My registry grew to contain 17 sets. Only 3 of which are anywhere near finished but almost all of them are sets I hope to one day complete. I'm getting off track though because I don't want to get caught up in that subject. The point is that this was my collection. Several weeks ago

New coin in my collection

and HEY NGC....whats up with my stuff?? I am missing a few of the early 1980's commemorative coins and yesterday I reduced that number by 1! I received the 1982 Proof George Washington Silver half dollar in the mail. It was only $12 including shipping....not bad at all for a very sharp looking coin!! I was wondering if anyone knows what the orginal price of the coin was when issued from the mint? I would like to put that info into the registry with the coin. Also...whats the hold up with c

EASTER "COIN" HUNT

Just a thought... My sister-in-law was talking about spending Easter with her kids who live out of state. We began waxing nostalgically about times gone past, and the Easter egg hunts we use to have for the kids in Grandma's backyard. That hasn't happened now for about twenty-five years. The "kids" are now in their forties with children of their own. As we talked about how family traditions so often seem to fade away and get lost, I began to think about how each generation and new "spri

Looking for a little help from all the poeple who are in the know!

What can I expect from the registry awards. Being new to the registries, I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about the registry awards. If a person has a "best in catigory" award symbol next to their set, do they recieve a plaque or certificate from NGC too? Or is it just the little ribbon beside their set, that they get? Also, if there are any certificates or plaques, when could a person expect to recieve it? Another question. Every year upon renewal of the paid subscription, does a
