My Plans for Later This Year

I am putting together an interview sheet as I am going to interview some coin shop owners.... Greetings!! Well, the "Reverse of 2007" is certainly going to spawn some extra excitement this year. And I KNOOOW ALLLLLL of you ran to wherever your coins are to check up to see if YOU had one...I know I sure as hell did!! And no, I don't. But the excitement had me thinking about what I could do a little differently to spawn a little excitement of my own, and I decided I am going to attend so

Presidential errors

An error within itself...kinda Well, it's minimal, but in the NGC report of the Presidentail errors of the MONROE Dollar, they show a Washington Dollar (told you it was minimal!) But apart from that, Granted, that's cool and all, but there are some real other errors I asked NGC about, that they denied me on. One is the eye on Madison. Some are full circle, some arn't (that also goes along with the curl on the shoulder, missing one). The other is a die crack on the reverse that extend

RE: Look what I found Pt 1

Mr. Cooper..... If I can find a find like that, Can I borrow 3 of your 9 kids? I got 3 of my own, so I figure, I may come up with at least a 1909 VDB...Hopefully in better condition. I'll even let you choose the kids! :-)

Excellent NGC submission

Sometimes I even surprise myself! I've only been an active member here for 2 years and I can honestly say I am obsessed with the modern coins. I know that most seasoned collectors don't really consider modern coins worth the time to bother with them. I do appreciate the early designs and especially the history that goes with them. My pocketbook wouldn't allow me to invest with many early coins. I learned from a local coin dealer that they only way to learn how to grade coins is just sta

THE PERFECT SET

2008 BALD EAGLE COMMEMS I rarely get a chance to post a journal, but I just had to show off my latest accomplishment. This set was not as easy to put together as you may think. It took quite an investment and time but the end result I think is worth it. I wish now that I had a registry set up this would definitely be in it. Good luck to all in your endeavors in this wonderful hobby. Emil M

My "Wish List" for a Friday Night...........

Leroy Van Allen is my Hero !!! What I love about our hobby is the way we all try to figure out how we will pay for the next coin we add to our Registry Sets. This little jewel will be somebody's tonight and I hope it is mine. I will be running the math to see what I may have to sell from my collection to pay for this coin if I win the auction. Wish me luck!!   King of Eagles

Building a 1953 Proof Set from scratch

It appears to my novice eye that 1954 is about as far back as you can go and get a good Proof Set for a price that doesn't price me out of the market. I've had horrible luck trying to locate an acceptable 1953 Proof Set at a price that my budget will allow. And that's the cheapest of the ones that I need. It's really disheartening for a low-budget collector like myself, as I'd really like to fill out my 1950s Proof Sets, but am reaching the point where I can't afford to do it. As much as I'd l

Kudos to Amy Lorenzo

Count me in as a fan of Amy Lorenzo... I agree with you guys, Amy Lorenzo is the perfect NGC employee. I have had some recent troubles at NGC and Amy was right on top of it and was able to get to a resolution extremely fast. As compared to problems I had a couple of years ago when my querries to NGC would dissappear in ether. So count me in as a fan of Amy. She does indeed deserve a raise. Hope it is enough to cover the rising gas prices :-) The attached picture is of the 2008 Australia

A Long Time

It has been a long time since my last journal. It has been a long time since my last entry. Like a lot of others I feel like I need to focus on what I am trying to collect. While my primary interest is my type set, there are so many subsets, half-dimes, dimes , quarters, that I feel like I am always going off on a tangent and I need to try to focus on a denomination or something. I have been fortunate enough to be able to pick up a few very nice seated halves lately, so maybe I should try t

She is a Beauty Clay !!!

Amy Lorenzo is my favorite NGC Employee..... Very nice MS 70 Early Release Silver Eagle Clay !!! Yes I do believe that Amy deserves a raise and she is the kindest person at NGC without a doubt !!! I just added a New Eagle to the nest this past weekend....A hard coin to come across to fill the Registry....I know one thing my collection may be growing but my wallet is shrinking.

Not a bad submission at all

Now if my 1954 Proof Set could just come out of Economy Purgatory... I sent in 9 commemoratives two weeks after I submitted my 1954 Proof Set. Why 9 instead of 10 or 15? Money. I have a lot of commemoratives at home, but my budget said "9, Son. Just 9" Anyway, the grades were just posted for my commemoratives and I did alright. 8 of them came back either PF69 or MS69, and one, a 1990 Eisenhower, came back PF70UC, which really made my day. In the interim, my 1954 Proof Set still sits at Sch

ISN'T SHE A BEAUTY!

Back home after a trip to NGC! ..You receive one submission back from NGC with grades that drive you crazy. You get mad, stomp around and feel like you could crash a grape! ..Then you get a submission back from NGC that is almost perfect. You think the folks at NGC must be up all night thinking how they could make us collectors happy! ..Speaking of NGC, isn't Amy Lorenzo a great example of the people working at NGC? They produce a quality product with outstanding people!

NGC Finally Comes Through

I continue to remind myself how much of a butthead I can be so often. I recently dropped a bomb, sharing my frustration with my fellow collectors (you fine folks) about a masive submission to NGC under their bulk grading program. It really is a great program, just frustrating for s fairly high strung person such as myself. As most, if not all of you know, if one is a dealer (maybe a member of collectors society or the ANA) one can submit a ton of coins (minimum 100 all of the same type (ie J

There Will Be.......Pictures

Not being very computer literate gets frustrating sometimes. Greetings!! A subject I have given very much thought to lately is whether or not to spend the extra (valuable) time to try to get good pictures of my coins, and then do all the cropping, shrinking, etc. and post these in my collection here. I get a bit worried about people using the images for coins they do have have to "sell" on ebay, or other sites, and this worries me a bit. Also, unlike ebay, for me personally as I am not

Look what I found!!

A key date Lincoln. Only 1.8 million struck... I was going through some coins that I believed to be mostly junk, when lo-&-behold, I found this sleeper. This is a 1909-S Lincoln cent. VF+. A little soft on the obverse. Reverse is better. A pretty nice coin. I just wonder how long I have had it and didn't know. I must have been blonde in a previous life. Not trying to dis blondes... I just know that when each of my nine kids had blonde hair, they were a bit scattered brained. HEY WAIT!!

The waiting

12 days??? Well I've been waiting for a month now for my grade submissions. I called yesterday and I still got 3 weeks to go. That's okay but it's just a tad off the estimate. hehe I just put together another 5 coin package for them to grade. I'm getting my Dolly Madison gold coin graded and just by comparison of the others that are PF69UC this one has more "pop" so I'm hoping for one grade better, since that's all that's left after 69. My others are just these early commemoratives: 1920 Ma

What? No more money????

Well what happens when the well runs dry? I've recently come to grips with reality, at least somewhat. I've decided I'm spending too much on this coin collection of mine. I won't even get into details but suffice it to say it's been a great 4 months! I guess for now I'll get some commem's graded. Photograph the rest of my coins and add them to my data base. This is very time consuming as I have all coins from all three mints from 1956 in proof and from 1959 in mint sets. I don't open them to

Ugly Penny is here!

And it got here faster than expected! My 'ugly' Steel Lincoln got here this morning (it shipped from NJ to Ohio in 1 day. Go Fig.) Its actually both uglier than I imagined and more interesting as well. I put it into my 1943 Mint Set, with Pictures. (Much better pics than attached here, by better i mean quite larger.) http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/MySets_Listing.aspx?PeopleSetID=37068&SelectedTab=SetListing As I said, I paid just under $25 for this, and I a

No luck with the SAE!

Just can't seem to win 'em on Ebay! Those SAE in MS-69 must be some very popular coins. I am having absolutely no luck getting any of them that I bid on. I guess my bidding strategy ain't working too well. I keep my max bid, including shipping, a few bucks under the going market value. The winning bid usually is at or above...oh well, I will just keep trying. On the other hand, modern poof commemoratives, I am getting great deals on! $17 for a 1986 50c statue of liberty slabbed..that's just
