My 2008 W Silver Eagle has ARRIVED!!

I would BET this is an MS 70!! Beautiful coin! Greetings after a bit of a break as I have been attending to some small personal matters ( I hate my job and can't get my mind around it) But, it is very good to be back and to report that my 2008 Silver Eagle has arrived, and it is definately an MS70. The re-design, though only slight, does make this coin stand out, and I have not received a coin from the mint in as good of shape as this one. I'll know for sure of it's grade when I send this o

Ont the road back?

It appears things may be turning around. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Many of you responded to a post I put up about a month ago. Without going into to muc details, my love of collecting coins and my even more belowed collection was (and still is to a significant degree) at serious risk due to a massive change in my family's finanical position. The reaponse I received was both heartwarming, humbling and though provoking. Heartwarming in a way that several of you who I have exchanged e

Return to an old venture.

Once upon a time in the Collector's Society, I held the #9 Registry Set for Lincoln Memorial Proofs (1959-Present). It was a very nice set of many top pop coins and other highly graded pieces. Unfortunately, personal finances dictated the sell of this set. It was a SAD day in this house, let me tell you! I "mourned" the loss of this set for about six months. I had but one comfort. That being the set now belonged to another Registry member (I could still stop in, visit and say hello) and

BSA Coin Collecting Merit Badge

Just as my son, the extended family's only Boy Scout, started this badge (with me as the Troop Merit Badge Counselor) we found this on eBay. I've been somewhat attracted to NGC Sample coins for quite a while now and have about a 1/2 dozen or so in my set, adding one every now and again when it strikes my fancy. I was roaming around eBay about a two weeks ago not hunting for anything in particular when I happened across this coim from SampleSlabs. I found it immediately compelling to own this

Thanks NGC

Very quick turnaround I submitted a group of darkside material (6 pieces), British early 17th C-mid 19th C recently. These were sent under the standard world program. NGC received them on a Thursday, and mailed back graded the following Friday. 6 Days turnaround must be a new record for a standard submission.

Online Auctions

Is there a good place to Buy & Sell??? Need a little help. Can Anyone provide assistance on a good on-line auction site to sell modern coins? Other than e-bay!! While I am not knocking e-bay, I rather see the collector get a better deal than have all the profit being absorbed in fees. On a typical $1,000 auction it costs close to $100 or 10% on the selling cost if you factor in insertion, exit fees, and pay pal fees. It seems the only winner is the auction site. Sorry if I am boring you

Ebay -ugly coin

Taking a chance on Ugly I randomly looked on eBay last night and found a 1943s NGC steel penny that was titled as Ugly MS67 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180229570219 I got it for about $25 after shipping, which is less than I have bid for 'lower' graded ones that I never managed to win. Of course, I know already that the seller really didn't like the coin, and I know that the price I paid isn't too bad if it is better then the seller thought, and a bit

I've been thinking--------With all of the talk about consolidation.

Like I tell the new collectors that ask me what THEY should collect. There is NO wrong way to collect coins. They should find the type of coins that they like and collect those. If that type or series' of coins/collecting is what gives them enjoyment then that is what they should collect. The only catch is that they should not expect to try and make money on their collection immediately-today. If they do make a profit now, that's great but to actually realize any profit in our beloved hobby ti

Recently added.

So here is the newest Lincoln Memorial in my set. The coin arrived today and it is in the set. It is a beautiful example of the 1987D Lincoln Memorial. I bought this coin for 25% of the Numismedia retail in a BIN auction. A nice find with only 28 graded at MS68 and none higher by NGC! Enjoy and thanks for reading.

Pictures Added!

And off to NGC with the rest of them! I just finished uploading the pictures of my coins that I have in my Modern Commemorative registry. I am far from the best photographer but I believe the pictures came out ok. I am probably not going to take any pictures for the ASE since they are basicly the same. While the comms are different with every coin. That is the reason I enjoy them the most...always different...most of the time wonderful...sometimes butt ugly! I also sent in the last of my co

First go at a CrossOver

Eager to see how it goes I picked up a 1951 Washington/Carver Half Dollar in a PCI Holder with a grade of MS66. It appears to have good strike characteristics but is toned beyond belief. I still felt that it might be a good candidate for an NGC Holder, as PCI, in my opinion, anyway, seems to be a pretty reputable grading company. I asked for a minimum grade of 65, so if I don't get it, then I guess I'll just put it out on eBay.

A "Re-do" for my Silver Eagle Set

I added some good information on the coins I own so far.... Don't mean to dominate the journals today, just thought I'd add a little side bar about my Silver Eagle set. Having in my posession the official mintage figures from the Mint, I decided to change my descriptions from a light-hearted to a more informational forum, as it takes time to READ what people have in the sets, so I figured I should make it worth the effort. Check it out sometime if you have the time. Hav

Steel Pennies and the Means of Sacrafice

I don't think my generation could hold a candle to "The Greatest Generation" So, I was going through the contents of my "cedar chest coin find" last night and I cannot help but marvel on the "steel pennies" that are in that hoard. The "marvelling" is not really at the pennies themselves, for the pennies are not in "good" shape, as these particular pennies tend to have spots on them and the like. But the pennies, made in 1943 during America's "gear up" for what would be WW2 represent the sac

Ebay never ceases to amaze me...

...As to what will sell and what won't. A couple of weeks ago I listed several coins housed in NGC holders. Several were MS70 or PF70, all nice coins to be sure. Most of the coins barely sold for the cost of grading, and for the most part, I guess I can expect that, especially with modern coins. This week, I have 13 coins listed, all raw. The auctions end in about an hour from now, and to my surprise, several of these coins are actually bid at the listed value. WOW!! One example is an 18

...is harder than it looks. I recently got this 2003 Lincoln cent to add to my 21st Century type set. It gave me a chance to practice with my camera to try to capture a good image of the coin. After many attempts, I am finding that it is harder than it looks. Proof coins or others with mirror-like finishes are tough and shooting through scratched plastic does not make it easier. Around half of the time I need to retake the picture, so not only do I need to upgrade my collection, but now

A Natural Progression From Addict to Pusher

Since I have the disease why not infect others. As I have stated before, for they past two years I have been trying to make a go of a little coin business that has final shown some signs of being a success. I have had to over come some bad decisions that I made. The initial start up cost and the normal costs of a business. I am now paying down my debt while not adding to it. I have been lucky the last six months in having enough left over at the end of the month to pay all the bills and have e

My Collection Is Also Spread Out!!!

Bruce Wilmore, I can feel your pain.... Bruce's journal article really hit home with me. Like Bruce, my collection was really expanding into areas that were getting far afield from my Wild West and related sets. Plus, my credit card balances are getting way too high. I need to pay them off, and soon. So, I had to make some hard choices. Right now, the choice that is definitely the hardest, is removing my Large Cent registry set, and a few pieces of my gold. My goal is still the same, namely

What about my raw coins?

Can you add raw coins to the inventory? After reading I don't think I can add my pregraded coins (raw) to the inventory. I wish I could because I'd like to show them but can't until they're graded which may be some time. I'm trying to get all commemoratives (early) with a grade of MS65 or greater. When I buy raw ones I do my best to grade them from the pictures which is tough and very unreliable. Wish me luck in the future with grading these commemoratives. BTW here's a Maine that I'm looking

Peace (Dollars) Reign

A nice upgrade to my Peace Dollar Collection I've been very busy (still) nothing but work its bee maybe 3 weeks since my last entry. But today I got a 1925P NGC MS 65 Peace dollar. A surprising fact I got this one and my 1924P MS 65 from the same place Gainesville Coins. After checking out the auctions believe it or not I could buy them for less. So thats what I did. I should get it in a couple days and maybe just maybe I can move up at least one spot. Later JimL4004
