CAC--Is it really necessary?

Probably not going to make too many dealer friends 2008 is one-third of the way over and after the first of the year, I started seeing ads in numismatic publications for coins having the "CAC" sticker on them. After perusing the CAC website (www.caccoin.com) and from what I read, I am not buying into it. These coins are ALREADY certified and you are going to have a 4th-party grading company verify the grade on the holder? I see it as a ruse for some of the higher-end, larger dealers (some

GSA Morgan Dollars in the NGC Registry

More points for GSA vs. Non-GSA Carson City Dollars I suppose that I knew this before, but I had not purchased a NGC graded GSA Morgan Dollar and was able to pick up more Registry points than the same coin in a regular NGC holder, until now (see picture below). I suppose that the GSAs are more rare, but is it worth getting a bump in Registry points for it because of the packaging? I am aware that PCGS grades GSA dollars but removes them from the government's packaging. I am not aware if NGC

100%

The joy of completion... As of today I have received all the coins and my Silver American Eagle set is complete! Finally I have a complete registry set! A coin for my 21st Century type set is also on the way which will bring that set and that goal 1 coin from being complete until '09. I'm also waiting on a few new coins to help move my project with my stepfather forward. This week has been very productive for my coin collecting.

What do you guys think about this?

I think this would be a nice idea My Mom is fighting Cancer right now. They caught it relatively early, and she has a chance, so that's a good thing, but I'm not looking for sentiments from you guys, although I know you'd give them if I asked. I have a coin-related idea, and want some input. Hence, this Journal entry. When I turned 11 back in 1971, my Mom took me to my first Coin Store and bought me a 1909 VDB Lincoln. I still have that coin, and I was thinking about having it graded (it sho

"Quality Control"

Moving right along Well it has been 1 week as of today from the time they have recieved my coins and my order status is showing they are at quality control, so I am starting to get excited to see how they all grade. Also I am looking for a pf70 scientist and ms70 founding father if anyone out there knows where is a good place to buy one or has 1 to sell for a good price.

re. Why is it ???

On grading MS business strikes! I would also like why NGC has placed a lid on the grades for many of the morden coins. I am sure, we send in to NGC just as nice of coins as PCGS recevies and yet for example ngc has topped out state quarters at ms 67 and pcgs grades many 68s, also the sms set which would grade PCGS sf 69 are NGC 67s, not to mention the Dollars you cant hardly make a NGC 67 and PCGS are all over ebay! What is the deal are they handing over the modern business altogether to PCGS!

9 Stitches and a Coin

Off to Urgent care I went! I couple weeks ago I was working on putting a shed together in my backyard. It was a 2 day project and I was nearing the end when I decided I didn't need gloves anymore to finish up. That smart thinking got me to the Urgent Care Office and 9 stitches in my index finger! The good thing about it was that my wife was feelin' sorry for me and told me to go make a small purchase for my coin collection. What I purchased in pictured below. Also I received my submission ba

Why is it.........?

PCGS vs NGC grades Being a "poor man" who enjoys the new Presidential Coin series I found myself standing by the sidelines and watching others snap up the gold spouse coins. At $500.00 per a commitment to purchase the entire series would be a $20,000.00 outlay over ten years (assuming gold stands still). I went the frugal way and ordered my spousal, bronze metals from the US Mint. Generally disappointed is how I felt about the quality of the metals. Twice I sent back a metal which I thought

Made yet another submission

Nothing major, maybe... I submitted a 1976 Proof Set today. Why, you may ask? Because I was browsing around on eBay yesterday, and I happened to come across a Fixed Price auction for a 1976-S Kennedy in an NGC Holder, PF70 (Don't even remember if it was Cameo or Ultra Cameo) Seeing a coin like this on eBay isn't what surprised me, it was the $25,000 price tag on it. Will the seller get that price? I don't know. But I looked at the pictures on eBay, and then I looked at my Proof Set. Looked a

Copenhagen Mint And The Icelandic Die's Of 1922-1940

Do They Keep Blank Die's I think that the Copenhagen Mint must have stored unfinished dies at their mint. If you were to look at a group of lets say 2 Aurar's from the 30's that will consists of the 3 known variates of the 1938 2 Aurar. They are the open 8, half open or top of the 8 is filled in and the closed 8 which is both top and bottom of the 8 is filled in. And then the 1940 type 1 Copenhagen minted 2 Aurar, London minted the same year later in the year. The years on the coin is separat

Saving For a Key Date

takes time and lotsa discipline Well it's been almost a whole month since I last logged my collectors experience into a journal entry. I continue to read every new post/entry by my fellow members and have sent a few words to some of you, but I really haven't had any coin news to report. The primary reason is that I'm "trying" to save for a 1941-S Walking Liberty Half. I want a 41-S that matches the strike quality of the rest of my set and it appears as though it's gonna have to be an MS

First Submission

A learning experience. Sent in my first submission today. All are Peace dollars, I expect some to be body bagged. Didn't have anything really special to send in , but didn't want the coupon to expire. This is a test to see if my skill in grading,(HA HA), has improved. If they BB some of the coins, which I think they will, it will be good if their opinions are close to mine. Time will tell and who knows maybe I will be surprised.

out of the 200s Catagory 199 and counting down

takes a lot of points to pass someone up Dear journal.I am now out of the top 200s and now I am 199.I just upgraded a roosevelt dime in my collection.I can see myself getting to be #1 someday.I just need 4 million more points.I am still waiting on Ed McMan to knock on my door.So I am dreaming, what is the harm in that.My goal this year is to break #150 and to get at least 8 registry awards.6 of them is in the bag.No worries here.I dont know about a slow economy,I know some of my coins arent che

I'd never heard of Artificial Toning before

Learn something new every day, I guess. A couple of weeks ago, I had sent in a 1951 Washington-Carver Half Dollar as an Early Bird Cross-Over. It was encapsulated in a PCI holder with a grade of MS66. I doubted very seriously that it was really an MS66, and didn't pay anywhere NEAR that level of price. However, I was hoping that it might cross over to NGC at MS65, and I could still realize a hefty return should I decide to sell the coin. The coin was very heavily toned, but you could still see

Another really nice silver Crown

Japan 1906 1 Yen As I mentioned in another post, I am refocusing my collection towards silver world crowns. I am trying to get them in NGC slabs when I can afford, but as most of you will attest... easier said than done. If I can get a really nice crown, raw, for a decent price I will jump. Now... I know what some of you are thinking... a sucker and his money are soon parted, but not this time. I have several people that I do business with on a regular basis, and when dealing with people

Presidentials in the Pit.

They aren't worth their plastic. An indication of lack of popularity? Like several others out there, about a year ago I decided to start collecting the Presidential Dollars in MS65FD for the business strikes and PF69UC for the proof strikes. I like the set on historical grounds and I wanted to get them, and get them in a form were I could look at them without having to worry about anything messing them up. I want these looking nice when my nieces nephews and children grow up and start learning

An 1808/7 that I couldn't resist!

1808 and 1808/7 are two empty slots in my Capped Bust Half collection that I've found very hard to fill. Not due to any paucity of these coins, rather, the difficulty in finding really nice ones. For example, I had an 1808 NGC 58 that was quite superb in many ways, but it had been dipped, and retoned peripherally, in a way I found very 'artificial'. I don't mean AT (artificial toning), but the coin just didn't have 'the look' that I'm interested in, so I sold it. Yes, at a loss! I just had to

"Big Bucks Coins can be cleaned with no Penalty"

"Conserved 1804 Dollar in a NGC Slab?" Greetings Collectors, I have been somewhat "out of pocket" on a large remodel job, out in the "boonies". This has been a good thing as there is no internet or phones and my cell only works every now and then, thus I have curbed my spending dramaticly. I have been coming back into town only on sat. to get the mail, answer e-mails and phone messages and then back out again. I also always take time to read the journals and looks as if you all have all been b

"WATERBOMBER"

Newest addition ..This beauty left my hand on 8 April 2008 for NGC and grading! It returned today 26 April 2008 a total of 19 days counting weekends and the USPS. When others are talking about how long it takes for their orders to be completed, I wonder what they are doing wrong? I seem to remember someone posted a journal that a couple of their coins fell out at the Post Office when they went to mail their order in. How is that possible if you pack your submission correctly? I think NGC is do

Picking a focus for going forward.

Did you think I was gone? First journal in over a month. Well, I've been staying busy lately with school and work and the next two weeks should be "interesting." (Finals are fun) Even so, I'm still alive and I'm still here. (amazing isn't it?) I've been giving some thought to where I want to go with my collecting. Sure, I'm going to continue my Prez dollars sets and my type sets. Yes my Lincoln cents continue to figure prominantly into my long term goals. But when I think back to when I was

Kudos to an NGC Employee

Amy Lorenzo is great, too, but this is for somebody else. I had the pleasure of dealing with a gentlemen yesterday by the name of Mike. I don't know his last name, unfortunately, but I wanted everyone here to know that if you happen to work with him on something, that he will definitely take care of you and look out for you. Excellent job, Mike!!
