One unhappy camper

January, 2008 submission still not scheduled for grading? First a note to those of you who have contacted me offering me encouragement in my current financial situation. The commoraderie of my fellow collectors is one of the things I love the most about this hobby/way of life. Thanks, it really does mean a ton to me. Now onto my beef/question. I submitted 400 Nickels to NGC in January as a bulk submission. I know from previous bulk submissions that they typically take a month or so to tu

Star Designation expansion and the NGC Registry

Earlier this year, NGC expanded its Star Designation to all grades of US coinage up to MS 69 and PF 69. A coin with Star Designation is automatically assigned a Registry point premium in order to recognize its exceptional eye appeal for the grade. Prior to the expansion, the Star Designation was limited to coins grading between MS 63/PF 63 and MS 69/PF 69 and therefore we needed to create Registry scores for star designated coins with grades lower than 63. Today we will implement an update to

"John Adams" and my Feelings of Pride

My Presidential Proofs Look even more astonishing Greetings! Lately I have been glued to the mini-series on HBO "John Adams" and get these great feeling of pride in the American forefathers and what they did to create a new country. Now, I am not usually a big fan of any mini-series as they usually never garner my attention for that long, but this is truly mesmerizing especially if you are a fan of history, as I would dare say most numismaniacs are. The mini-series reminds me that w

My Lincoln Memorial Set

I have been updating my ProCoin and Excel files this weekend. It started me thinking about just where my set was headed. I have been working on this set for about the last 5 years. I have completed 37% of the set so far and have the number 12 set. The rarity of the top pop coins remaining to be acquired will make for even more of a challenge than I have encountered thus far on my journey. Many of the coins from 1959 to 1982 have a single digit pop in MS67. These will definitely be hard t

March in Review!

What went on with my collections in March. I am quite happy to say that March was a busy month for my collection! I made some purchases from the Mint and off of Ebay. I also had a few coins graded from NGC and put alot of coins into my registry. From the Mint I received the '08 the proof and silver proof quarters, the proof presidental dollars, proof SAE, and the proof Bald Eagle commemoratives. On eBay I puchased a 1987 MS-69 SAE, a 1986 PF-69UC SAE, and 1983 Silver $1 PF-69UC Olympics

My collection is getting a little too spread out

I've decided to consolidate a bit. I've been taking a look at my coin holdings, and I feel like I've got fair to mediocre collections in a lot of different areas, but nothing really outstanding anywhere. Therefore, I've decided to divest myself of part of my collection so that I can focus on building up at least one quality set. The first thing to go, I think, will be my Pandas. I love the coins, but I've found that I haven't done anything with them in quite a while as far as augmenting my set

My Birthday Gift from NGC

Not an April Folls joke I've heard just about every corny April fools reference you can imagine. It comes with the territory when your b-day falls on April 1st.....I guess there is an upside-people tend to always remember my birthday and I get plenty of phone calls and well wishing emails. I'm not a curmudgeon about birthdays like some...they are not a huge deal but I do like to use them as a day of reflection, and to take a moment to acknowledge the wonderful graciousness of God who has al

Re: "In Stock and Reserved"

I couldn't agree more Scenario : I bought Platinum Eagles, $1945 USD.. 3 months ago Today I am the proud owner of a NGC PF70 set, they graded perfect. The US Mint showed my order as in stock and reserved for over 2 months ! they may have washed out onto the street. Meanwhile, the price of platinum went WAY above the price I paid. They still delivered. I love this country ! thankyou US MINT !!

Oh my, it's almost there. Can't wait...

I may have struck a jackpot... Oh my, it is almost through. I submitted 1891-CC TOP-100 VAM-3 SPITTING EAGLE Morgan and it is in Quality Control. In my opinion it is also a DPL. I hope that Numismatics Gods have finally smiled at me and the nice people at NGC have graded this puppy at leased an MS-64 DPL . Oh baby, come on... "In Stock and Reserved"

The journey of a coin from the Mint Greetings! So, those words "In stock and reserved" have been read by many of you here I am sure. Almost all of you who do order your coins right from the Mint. And, if you are like myself, those words bring a great sense of relief and further longing, because you KNOW your coin is soon to be at your door. Soon the tracking number will be made available so every day you can watch the progress of your coins trip from Kentucky all the way to points every

Why coins????

Just kids at heart! I haven't written a journal entry in a good long time, but I have been watching and reading. Over that time I have enjoyed so many journal entry's, but it got me wandering, what exactly makes us collect these little pieces of metal anyway. Is it the sense of owning something old, something new, something rare, an investment, something to pass the time, sense of accomplishment, the thrill of the chase, or could it be something deeper. Now I can't speak for everyone but somet

was I in your baggage Mike?

I missed the whole point I guess... Mike, I guess I miss read most of that post from him....I just barely skimmed it as I thought it was a advertisement that was misplaced. which I am glad to see as I have been looking for a new place to advertise and sell coins....let's see, which ones to post first????

I must have stepped off the planet....

Because I certainly must have missed SOMETHING.... SRL made a post earlier today saying he was, basically, going to go to an all PCGS coin set, with one minor exception, and further went on to mention coins he is in need off for his registry set. Those coins needing to be in PCGS slabs... so what did I miss here?? Is this not the NGC registry? While I commend NGC for allowing PCGS slabbed coins into their registry, I firmly believe there should be at least SOME NGC graded coins in the sets

Finally I Have It !!!!

Here are the Obverse Pic's of the 1827 Overton 137 Bust Half Dollar. This coin has an R-6 rarity rating which according to the book on Overton's mean that there are between 13 to 30 known to exist. Overall it's a nice coin with good detail. It's got a decent strike considering the reverse dies were recycled from 1825. The overall patina is a little dark and there are a few spots on the reverse in the field above the Eagle. Still, it's a nice example of a coin that was minted almost 200 years a

It's a Good Thing I WAITED....

"no longer an ebay member" what would have happened? Greetings!! So a few weeks ago I was eager to get an MS 69 1990 Silver Eagle from a certain seller on ebay. I saw the bids were still low with only hours to go, so I hap hazardly put in a bid, and then AFTER I did so, I read the description "WE NO LONGER ACCEPT PAY PAL" I thought "ooops" but decided to go ahead with the transaction anyway, as most people who sell on ebay really are honest. Obviously, I did win the bid. I contacted the

My order is in!

Not to bad with the grades I received My beautiful wife just called and said my coins are back from NGC. I already checked out the grades some time back but it did take longer than usual to get them through the process. They spent about 2 weeks in "received" status but once they they got out, they move along quickly. Pleasantly surprised

I'm still waiting on my 1954 Proof Set, but they're moving right along, and I got my grades for the Modern submission that I made at the same time. Nothing fancy. A 2008 Clad Statehood Quarters Proof Set and a couple of Silver Eagles. The Eagles came back PF69UC, which is not unexpected, although a 70 would certainly have made my day. However, I did get PF70UC on 4 out of the 5 quarters, including the New Mexico which is now one of my personal favorites. Only the Alaska came back PF69UC. All i

It's on it's way! My prayers were answered!

The Grading Gods were kind and graded my 1827 O-137 Bust Half! Praise be to those that grade as well as those who do the Variety Plus attributions! Most importantly I must thank the Lord for looking out for me. Blessings do come in all shapes and sizes! Now that I don't have any more finger nails left because I chewed them all off, my submission is finally on it's way back home! It was an Early Bird submission that was received on the 6th and finally cleared Quality Control yesterday. Of the

RE: Here I sit now broken-hearted

The bright/not so bright side of a 1954 proof set submission Good news-bad news here. BAD: If your proof Franklin half is somewhere north of PF66 Cameo, your Economy tier coin will exceed the dollar amount for Ecomomy and send it to Early Bird. GOOD: You will have a real nice coin! Has anyone ever had that happen? Send a coin into one teir and have NGC say that it is too valuable for that said teir? My guess is that you would get a phone call but wondered if anyone else stumbled upon
