Obsessed with coins!

This hobby is a lot of fun (and expensive)... Greetings fellow collectors, While I have always loved coins, only recently have I become a serious collector and joined the Collectors Society just last year. Man, I had no idea this hobby would be so addictive and so expensive. And with two kids in college my timing could not be any worse! As a kid growing up in the 70's I would save all pre 1965 silver that crossed my path. Quite often opportunities would arise at family card games or whi

NGC AWARDS LOOK LIKE THIS...

The "hard copy" of ones "15 minutes of fame". Muchos gracias NGC! Greetings Collectors, I have just come through 48 hours of pure hell. I can't remember the last time I've been sick with anything more than a slight cold but what hit me on Wed afternoon was like something out of a horror flick. The most horrible cramps, nausea, throwing up from both ends etc. These are the kinds of times when one is oh so thankful for a significant other. A symbolic prelude to getting older I guess, as today,

Thank You NGC!!

What a pleasant surprise. Well today had been kind of a disappointing day. I had originally planned on taking my Mustang to the muffler shop for dual-exhaust installation but our toilet broke, and I mean literally, and I needed to stay around waiting for the plumber to come by. Luckily the muffler shop is open on Monday so I will just go then. I did get accomplish one very good thing today in my constant goal of having a completely organized collection. I took my top 50 coins, value-wise,

Modifications?

One day it's there....next day it's gone! Hello everyone, I lost a set of my new 2011 Presidents to a modification by NGC. I had several coins for the slots that I entered on 1-28. I entered them all and shortly my top set was down on the list. I now have one coin listed on 2-4-11. I didn't do it. I had my sets in order and left them, but now they do not reflect it. Has anyone else had their sets "modified" without actually doing it themselves? I know another member has had it happen too

RE. RE. Just exactly

To some extent your idea was attempted more than 20 years ago. The first coin authenticator for the ANA was Charles Hoskins. When he left his position with the ANA he moved back to the Washington, D.C. area which is where I met him. He started the INS (International Numismatic Society) which provided a coin authentication service. Over time the INS started a grading service which I firmly believe was the first third party grading service. They started grading on an informal basis and then

RE:OK Just exactly

The future of Coin Grading RAM-VT Journal entry has sparked some ideas of want the grading system will be like in the future. I can remember as a kid looking at both the Redbook and the Bluebook and only seeing the one price for any coin in UNC only. The dealers back then would have a higher price's for those coins if they were better then most and even higher price for those that showed exceptional quality of preservation. Its always been a dealers game even before the Sheldon's scale was put

The Agony of Submitting

Just where does that agony reside? When I first started submitting coins several years ago to the service that starts with an A, yes I know I'm speaking heresy, I used to think it was all about picking out some coins and then the agony was waiting the 3-4 weeks. I never did real well, but I was also learning how to grade, and still don't have that one down. My first submission to NGC was better, but still somewhat lackluster and there was a time I thought that there might be a conspiracy aga

OK just exactly how many grades of uncirculated are there?

I figure that currently there are either 30 or 39 distinct grades of UNC. There are many of you out there (if not most of you) that were not in this hobby when the Sheldon pricing system for large cents was converted to a grading scale for U.S. coins. At the time UNC?s were graded 60, 63, 65 & 67. The were those out there at that time that were jumping up and down saying that greedy dealers would some day use all eleven grades (60 to 70) to grade coins so they could charge incrementally

This One Didn?t Get Away!

Taking a lesson from the one that got away, I snagged a great coin at a good price. About a month ago, I opined about a very nice coin that slipped through my fingers because I hesitated. While I cannot take back the actions of the past, I can take the lessons learned from the past and apply them to future opportunities. One of the lessons I learned when buying coins is to try and buy the hard ones first. For example, I am working to assemble a high grade Morgan Dollar collection of MS-65 &

20th Anniversary Sets

My Gold Got tired of looking at a box I couldn't open, it's been almost 4 and a half years. Everyday was like the night before Christmas, only the next morning I still couldn't open my present!!! Almost traded the sealed box plus 2 sealed boxes of 2007 Gold Eagles 4-COIN PROOF SETS for a 1995W P70. Only time will tell if I made the right or wrong decision, in about a week I will know the grades for the 11 coins. Got my fingers crossed, hope to get a few 70's. Good grading luck to everybody!!!

When to buy?

It's hard to wait! When the new issues come out for the upcoming year its hard to know when to buy. I bought a 2010 NGC PF70 Silver Eagle Proof for $124 when they were offered presale and now they are listed for $80. I find it hard to wait for the price to come down. Now the 2011 issues are coming out and I need to decide when to buy. I guess I will wait on some and buy some now. Whatever I can afford. While the weather is to bad for fishing so I guess I will shop today. -gotagofish To

their is a few I need to get rid of I was looking at my morgan set 2 and their is only two coins I want in that set. Then I look at my PF69 quarters and my fractional gold and really dont care for them either> So what to do about gettin rid of these extras I dont want so I can make my other sets stronger. So I will ponder the thought of getting rid of these hopefully by the end of this year. Cause I need to work on my NGC first spouse and Morgans And my PCGS set and of course to finish

COIN FOR SALE?

How can you pass up a good deal? Hello everyone, As some of you know, I am trying to sell my collection and move on to other things. I have a few graded coins which are not entered into the Registry, but are of great numismatic and monetary value. I spoke with the person at Heritage Auctions today, and asked if they'd either be interested in buying, or taking on consignment, one of these coins. They said that the lack of interest in New Zealand coins would not be worth buying, nor offering

My Stack's Lots Have Found Their Home

and I'm beginning to scan them I'm really happy tonight. Not because I received my lots I won in the recent 52 Collection auction at Stack's. What I'm really happy about is finding out a great local connection to one of the lots. I suppose technically this journal entry should be over on the currency side, as the main lot I wanted was used on Iowa obsolete currency. The lot in question was lot number 3860 in the 52 Collection sale. The lot consisted of a die proof vignette printed on India p

Well when a fellow collector offered to sell his to me, I had to control my excitement, but I bought it. I am very happy to add this little GEM to my set. My Journey

Getting started I started coin collecting in 1961. I was Three. I would save every shiny penny, nickel, dime, quarter and half that I could lay my hands on that was mine of course. I saved my allowance, and put the different years away. over the years my franklins were stolen by the Avon ladies kid. Most of the shiny pennies now have turned. Album toning! My '52-D Franklin is done in by this, I am sure I will get a (Cleaned designation) Most of my collection until 1978 consisted of coins

My grand daughter who is only 3 hates NGC Today I learned that ?The NGC Multi-Coin Holder will be offered only in combination with NGC bulk grading services, and will no longer be available in combination with Tier grading or as a ReHolder service option.? For years I have had the one dollar American Silver Eagle 3 coins set put into one Multi-Coin Holder for my grand daughter. But not any more. NGC is beholden to the big guys. I filled the last hole in my Proof Lincoln Memorial set

But I'm not done yet. I've still got a long way to go. I got busy and found the last few coins I needed to make my set show 100% for now. I added the 2010-S & 2011-S to get me up to date. I really hate the way NGC is mounting these shield cents face down. Come on guys, do it right! I also snagged a 1987-S in NGC PF70UC with a population of only 16. I was pretty lucky on that one. I have a 1970-S proof set with a nice ULTRA CAMEO small date cent, but I haven't had time to send it in
