time to change the grading scale ...

How many AU-58's do YOU own? How many great coins do YOU own? Coins so great, they look BU, but have just that trace of wear? AU-58, right? How many crappy coins do you own? Not a trace of wear, but all those NASTY bag marks and gouges and dings and scrapes? MS-60, right? (62 if you're lucky ...) Why should those nasty MS-60 coins be "worth" more than those great AU-58 coins? It's time to allow AU grades up to 64 and MS grades down to 50. No uploaded image necessary ... we've all

FINALLY A GRADED DENMARK 1836 IFF 2 RBS

A COIN THAT WAS MINTED FOR ICELAND I WAS JUST BROWSING EBAY FOR A DANISH 1836 IFF RIGSBANKSKILLING OR RBS FOR SHORT, THAT RARLY SHOWS UP IN ANY OF THE THREE DENOMATIONS THAT DENMARK PRODUCED FOR ICELAND BECAUSE OF THE SHORTAGE OF COINS THAT HAD PLEGED THE COUNTRY FOR MANY YEARS. THESE THREE COINS 2,3,AND 4 RBS DON'T HAVE THE NAME OF ICELAND ON THE COIN BUT IS STILL CONCERDED PART OF IT'S COINAGE. I HAD BOUGHT ONE ON EBAY A FEW YEARS AGO THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN IN UNC AND WHEN I SENT IT

Coin in the shadow box

2010 ASE PF70 UC This ones for Six Mile...Here is a photo of that coin in the shadow box! This coin has the best mirrors really black and if I had a better light this photo would be better still, not bad for a night time photo though! Take a photo of a mirror...yeah right!

Tip from a photographer friend Build yourself a photo studio out of a box! Yeah, I know I had the same reaction. Actually it works pretty well at least I'm getting consistent lighting in my photos. Built this shadow box I call it because I can move the shadow by moving the light source around. What I need now is a good light like Moondoggy has been using or a halogen lamp on a tall enough stand to shine on the top of my box. I'm leaning toward the halogen because I can use it to highlight hair

I NEED TO PURCHASE A SILVER EAGLE

Getting tired of seeing that red -3?? points in my sets Friends; Well the year is off to a blast in my numismatic life and work. All is fine but when I check out my site I keep seeing the dreadful red minus points of a sale to help cover purchases. I don't have a problem with the sale it's just the reminder. If I don't get in gear and purchase a MS70 to make this situation go away I may start to have nightmares. Has anyone ever died in their sleep being beat up by a LARGE RED -NUMBER? I d

A quad addition and a new photo

Adding to my MS collections and my first night time photo Greetings again my fellow purveyors of the coin, Tonight I would like to share on two subjects. First I was fortunate to add four coins to my MS SAE collection 1989, 97, 98, 2000. I won four auctions in the same evening. (must of been a slow evening) or I was just lucky. Secondly I would like to share some info on a previous journal I posted about my "New" Naturalight lamp. Tonight was my first attempt at shooting photo's at n

Unusual find

Something I have never seen before searching Lincoln's Good Afternoon, I have been sick for the last 8 days. Severe sinus congestion, headache, ear aches (both ears), eyes hurt, headache, etc. I am sure you know the drill!! Went to Dr. and got antibiotics and afrin. After 4 days of meds almost 60% human again (75% is normal for me) A friend dropped off about $160.00 in loose change for me to go through. I was separating the coins into appropriate denominations and had not found a

Expensive Empty Tubes

that aren't so empty any more... As I mentioned in an earlier post, my father-in-law recently bought several 1 oz. gold Maple Leafs for my wife's birthday. They came in soft plastic flips. I decided that I'd rather store them more conveniently and safely in original tubes if I could find them. I did manage to find a company that sells them, so I put the two that would be required in the cart and tried to checkout. At that point the $50 minimum purchase was announced, so I added a 2010 MS70 F

First buy in 2011 completes my set of 'S" Mint Indian Head Half Eagles

I've taken my first step in my coin collecting journey. I finally found a 1908-S Indian Head Half Eagle to complete my small set of Indian Half Eagles from the San Francisco Mint. The coin was a lovely example that was graded AU55 by NGC. It looks solid for the grade. The coin was purchased at this month's FUN on my behalf by a very good friend. Collecting in slabs and raw

Does anyone else do this? I collect the best condition coins that I can afford already slabbed and I also try to fill Dansco's with circulated coins as duplicates. Am I the only one that does this insane thing? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The Elusive 1918 Mercury is Found!

Or how I lucked out on Ebay before someone else snapped up the slightly overpriced dime. Well I was cruising through Ebay today for kicks and for future possible purchase, when my latest sale to FNG is consumated. Anyway, as I was typing in various searches, I tried 1918 Mercury PCGS and up popped a nice AU 53 1918-S for the BIN price of $55.00. According to the NGC price guide, this is worth about $10.00 less. But with my experience with Ebay auctions for 1918 Mercury Dimes, I knew I bette

I'm Lousy at Submitting

I'm going to have to face the facts... I believe that it was Albert Einstein who said, " The definition of insanity is making the same mistakes and expecting different results." ( often misquoted as "doing the same thing and expecting..."). Well I am either hardheaded beyond cure, thick as a brick or certifiable because for years I have been making the same mistakes and inevitably getting the same results. The last I journaled--before the new year I believe--I had my fingers crossed as I sen

Finally, Some New Coins!

Or a day at the local coin show... The boys, Steven and Alex, and I headed to the local coin show yesterday. It was a first for both of my sons. Steven, 24 yr old, bee lined for the dealers with paper currency. He was thrilled to get a good look at a large note Black Eagle. The large notes really have caught his fancy. Sadly, neither he nor I had enough money for him to purchase one but he is on a mission now. He?s never really made a big dollar purchase for anything like this before and he i

a year later

on jan 22 -2009 i posted a journal regarding the bet that myself (fernando Baez) and mr. Isaac Rudman did. We as avid collectors at the end of year 2009 ended Mr Rudman in place 25 in the overall place I ended in place 32. Now this coin adrenaline has really hit us hard. Mr. Rudman is in position #8 with 1,016,947 points , holding 1,015 certified coins. not bad for 16 months. I'm in position # 10 overall with 994,344 points and holding 1,923 coins ( #4th place as owner with most certified coin

Back in the Saddle

A new addition to an old set Dear Journal: My non-CC GSA hard pack Morgan dollar set has been quiet for a long time, with only one coin added in the last 3 years, until now. This 1898-O is now the second coin I have added since October of 2007. These coins are very rare, and are seldom seen in the marketplace. Due to their rarity, prices can be volatile. When prices really began moving up in 2006 and 2007, I stepped to the sidelines, and wondered if I would ever be able to add another ra

The next level

A series of up-trades ultimately puts in my hands a 1911-D quarter eagle. I reflect on coin collecting benchmarks through the years. After more than a year of wanting, contemplating trades, and various simulations of trades, I finally made the move yesterday and did the trades needed to own a 1911-D quarter eagle. Up until yesterday, I had never spent $2000 or more on a single coin, though I did (and still do) have in my possession an MS65 common date Saint Gaudens $20, which if sold would ha

It's In the Mail.....

The joys of coins in the mailbox. I was discussing coins with a non-collecting co-worker earlier and I told him that I love it when I come home and have coins in the mailbox. After a tough day when not much goes the way you want it to, it makes me feel better when I have coins sitting in my mailbox. He told me that I'm probably the only person who would ever say that. I think that we all feel that way. I would venture to guess that every day, (Except Sunday, of course), one of us on her

I still have one purchase left this coming week and have decided to relax afterwords and enjoy life for a while. Heck, I always enjoy life but sometimes it can get a little hectic.
