Another simple pleasure in a vast world of coin collecting !!
Another find at work a couple days ago gave me one heck of a thrill ...counting thru a pile of nickels one caught my eye it was one flashy 1937-P Buffalo ! Upon closer examination it appears someone had polished the coin but none-the-less details wise it's an attractive higher grade VF .
Granted it's not headed anywhere to be slabbed and won't make it into an albumn but it sure is down right COOL to find one of these especially i
Bright White Rosie + !!
Good Evening,
Put a bid in on a 1950D MS67+FT Roosevelt dime.
Didn't think I would win it, but low and behold I did!! I thought it would go for a lot more. It is bright white, full of original luster and really sharp torch lines.
This will be my first "+" coin to reside in my Roosevelt collection. The picture looks great!! Can't wait until it gets here!
Just wanted to share my latest new coin with you all.
Thanks,
Todd

Two days of modifying for naught?
Hi everyone,
I just spent the last two days adding and modifying my sets, and I was just in the registry and my Sacagawea sets are now out of the order I put them in. Does this happen to you?
Maybe the computer does it. It makes me feel like I could just toss them in randomly and negate any pride I have.
At least, they didn't disappear altogether.
Have a great week. Sets are coming out too fast for my liking.
Good Luck!

Sink or swim, my ultramodern collection is moving from rolls and bags of raw to boxes and boxes of slabs.
A while back, I posted a comparison of NGC and PCGS grading, and I noted that PCGS offers bulk grading (then $10/coin, now $12, but with no charge for below minimum grade).
Well, I submitted to somebody other than NGC four date/mint mark combinations of Westward Journey business strike nickels, and the results are in.
The best quality came from original bank wrapped rolls (2005-P Bison
Easy come, easy go...
So when I woke up this morning, the Lincoln cent roller coaster had gone back down the hill. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.
Time to look forward. I purchased 3 more Kennedy Proofs and an 1884-O Morgan for my collection. I'm also keeping my eye on an auction for a PF70 Lincoln Dollar. I hope to win that and get my collection up to date.
On another note, I find it hard to not stray with my collecting goals, especially when reading the great articles of a publ

This Sunday, January 30, 2011, starting at noon Pacific time, Goldbergs will be auctioning off the fourth and final installment of the Dan Holmes collection of U.S. Large Cents, his "late dates".
The collection has at least one example of every die variety of late date large cent from 1840 to 1857, except the unique 1851 N-42, whose owner apparently has no intention to sell (see the catalog for a story...). So it is more complete than th

Thanks to the hobby of Metal Detecting, I have become re-interested in Coins, Currency, The Minting Process from the 18th century to present and the history of how the exchange of Coins/ Currency has shaped our Economy. From the Revolutionary War to future Wars, Currency has played a major role in society. They say it will be replaced someday, but lets hope not. This will only lead to the extinction of a great hobby and life as we know it. " Its not the value of a coin that interests me, it'
Illusions and Reality
Looks like the great Lincoln point upgrade was an illusion (error or whatever). I'm happy to see NGC has "corrected" the points back to where they were. I had no takers on my swap offer anyway.
One of my goals for my Walking Liberty halves has been to complete the short set in MS-66 or better. The 1941-S ans 1942-S are the really expensive ones, and I expected it to be a long time before I found what I could afford.
Several months ago, I was surprised to get an unbe
which of these would you choose?
I have a horrible dilemma. I have this beautiful coin with these really nice photos and I can not decide which photo to use as my display photo. I would love everyone's opinions and also your reasoning for why you would use this one or that one and so on. Its a terrible predicament to be in and I NEED GUIDANCE!
The photo on the left is from the heritage auction, the right is from the ebay auction and the bottom photo is the zoomed in to just the coin also fro
I bought a nice toned coin to upgrade one spot but the coin went clear in about 10 days!
I just bought a 1936 buffalo nickel from a dealer at a auction site and in a week to ten days it lost its color!
I did nothing to the coin other then take it out of a card board flap and put it in a safety flap and take pictures of the coin!
The coin looked like it was naturally toned but it most of been artificially toned for this to happen.
I contacted the seller and he said there was no possible w

...but I didn't share purchases leading up to Tuesday.
Hi all, I'm still on a high from my good day on Tuesday. What I didn't talk about though, in that journal entry, was purchases leading up to it.
I do purchase some raw coins and one good company I've found to purchase from is Halan J. Berk in Chicago. I have bought several items (maybe even more than several) from them in the last couple of years. It came as a surprise to me though, the week between Christmas and New Year's, to get a $50
How many did you get?
Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone else is having trouble with the 2011 proof Presidents? I am thinking a 70 set is going to be tough. Let me know if you have sets in for grading?
Thanks

AND HERE'S MY 2 CENTS WORTH
Friends,
I have read enough, I have 2 pennies of which no points were added, or taken away. 1 large cent and 1 wheat. Collectors Society Police (NGC) need to go back 1 week and push the redo button. The points system is fine the way it was "IT AIN'T BROKE" leave it alone. If someone purchases a rare coin I am sure it already has a points value.
If you are wanting 10,000 points for your rare coin I say (go buy some more coins) and leave the system alone. We al
I just lost points for my lincolns
When NGC re-evaluated the scores for RED Lincoln cents, I lost ground on my 1963 mint set. Check out the current #1 set, then compare it to my #2 ranked set. Yes, he has an FBL Half Dollar, but I have two TOP POP Lincoln Cents that are basically unavailable in the market place.
The score for MS67RD 1963 was 336 points & 1963-D was 609 points.
Now they score 450 points each - for a net loss of 45 points.
The score for MS66RD 1963 was 6 points &
These points changes are crazy.
Like many others, my registry points and rank just changed, due to Indian & Lincoln cents point changes. On the strength of my four no-so-special RD cents, I gained almost 1900 points, but dropped 27 in rank.
I don't have a problem with points adjustments. I have requested some myself, e.g., when my pop 1/0 1842 cent got fewer points than "easily" obtainable 1850s large cents in the same grade. What I'd like to see is a more comprehensive re-evaluation o
The recent NGC point adjustments seem not to make any SENSE to me and other rantings and ravings of a confirmed Coin Nut .
Not that I am overly concerned on the subject , but reading recent posts with great interest concerning the recent NGC point adjustments to RED designations on LINCOLN CENTS , seem to make no SENSE to me where I have only two coins entered in the Lincoln Registry....both are RED . The 1970-S LD MS-64 RED cent went from a 3 pointer to 45 points due to the adjustment . My 19
Recent changes in the points for Cents and adding an MS67 coin haven't changed my basic goal. I'm just adding the words "or better" to the goal statement.
Still this post is mostly so I can get my overall goal and sub-goals down in print. Mostly, so I don't loose site of what I'm trying to accomplish.Back when I decided that I'd start a certified collection, I did a lot of research into prices, populations (census), etc. That etc. included a budget line item.I determined that a nearly com
What REALLY happened?
Like a lot of other collectors on this site, I was surprised to see the whopping changes in the few Lincoln cents I have (all in Mint sets). But looking a little closer:
- 1909-S VDB in MS-65 RD.....1,987 points
- 1947-P in MS-66 RD.........1,999 points
- 1954-P in MS-63 RD.........1,994 points
So, to everyone out there, I'll gladly swap my MS-66 RD 1947-P Lincoln for your MS-65 RD 1909-S VDB. You'll gain 12 Registry points! I'll even pay your shipping cost!
I got a boatload of points!
Hello,
Just wanted to give my "Lincoln cents worth" about the point increases.
I gained 40,000 points with the point adjustment! I am happy about that but, I feel it is way overdone. I have thought that the points for the Lincoln's was a little low, but this is way overboard!
I do not really try for the points, but I try to collect high end coins and expect a fair scoring for the low pop coins. I paid next to nothing for some of my Lincoln's and I now have som

Hi everyone,
Wow, what a great day! Several things were added to my collection today. First, I added 63 40% Kennedy halves to my silver hoard. The day I agreed to buy these halves (at $4 each), silver was up in the mid to high $28 dollar range. Consequently, I would have been up 25 cents per coin. I had to convert some stock into cash so I could pay for them (along with covering my bids in today's Stack's auction). Well, I silver closed down in the $26 range
HOLY COW did you see the price of the silver proof set's.
Did you see the price the of the silver proof set's, god 67.95 plus shipping 4.95 that adds up to 72.90, that is a little to eat for us living on s.s., that is 31.00 dollars higher then the mint proof set's, 31.95 + shipping, there must be a little GOLD iin it do you think!!!!. Yoal have a good day. don

or how I continue to analyze things long after they no longer need to be analyzed.
Okay, going back a few weeks, you may recall I had bid on a 1918 AU58 Mercury Dime that cataloged for about 60.00. Now I understand listed prices should only be used as a rough approximation but the price was listed across numerous current pricing guides, including NGCs, during the period of the Ebay auction.
Well, the coin eventually closed at a whopping 160.00 or so which far exceeded that 60.00. I couldn'
