Time to add another

One more and a Moondoggy ! Greetings all once again; Well, today I added this MS70 to my Eagle Collection. Last week I added a few MS69's. Am trying to get as close to finishing this collection as I can by Spring. I have also included what a moondoggy looks like along with my oldest son who was home from college for Christmas. My other son had not arrived from his college yet. Good luck to all in filling those empty slots. moondoggy To see old comments for this Journa

A Day In The life

In The Mail and Bank Visit Hello Collectors Got up this moring and went on the computer to check my e-mail, before heading out to the local Credit Union and checking to see if they have any Kennedy halves 64-69 or anything they might have put aside for me. Yes they let me look throw what they have, which I find usally but again I been banking with them since the stone age.Today I walk away with 8 silver Kenedy and 4 were 1964 and a mixer of the other dates. Also walked out with 4 Iks Not bad

The One That Got Away

A popular fishing metaphor describes the coin that got away from me. As collector?s we all naturally desire to acquire coins with spectacular eye-appeal for our collections. Each of us having an idea of what spectacular eye appeal should look like; we spend countless hours perusing hundreds of auction listings to find the proverbial ?needle in a haystack?. For many of us those countless hours turn into years until finally our meticulous searching pays off. However, there are those times when f

RUSSIAN "FLIP SIDE"

Now that I have carefully inspected this piece, the "newness" has worn off and it's... (reverse pic in my previous post of eBay bucks coin.)On to the next "slaying" of the next "beast". As some of you may have noticed, I'm off my silver bullion kick and now since my recent trade with a fellow collector here for 3 other U.S. gold coins, I am now looking at different pieces of "foreign yellow metal". Most can be had for around "melt" (or less) and there is some gorgeous works of art in some of t

EBAY 'bucks" COIN

It feels good 'til you think of what you had to spend to get that 2% kickback. Actually "deep down" is just another sick way of justifying another gold coin purchase... Not that the lack of any "justification has kept me from any other past purchase...Bottom line... Hopelessly ADDICTED...Only difference now is... I've finally accepted this cold hard fact! Greetings Collectors, I haven't been "beat up" too bad for my last post. (actually surprisingly, all were in agreement with my position) A

FIRST PURCHASE OF THE NEW YEAR

Upgrade of my Walkers Like most of you, I looked back over the last year to see now my collections are progressing! I decided that I needed to continue to uprade my Walkers where I could! I obtained this 1939 Walker MS-67, which I felt was a real steal, and I had to have it. The EBAY Bucks made a nice dent in the cost! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Satin Coins

I keep hearing rumors that these coins will no longer be minted... I have been actively working on my Lincoln Satin set. I have three or four coins to complete my MS69 set. Many of these coins are top pop! NGC shows no value for them as of now. If these coins are discontinued they either skyrocket in price or fall away in obscurity. Since the set contains the bicentennial Lincolns, I figured the would be a good spec set. Only time will tell, and I will continue working on it. I guess we'll

It's been a long 4 days

Snowed in since Sunday Friends, There is nothing worse to me than being stuck at the house. I have checked the journals to read something new once every 3-4 hours, so yes I guess I am very caught up with all of the journals. Tuesday had a little excitement as 15 of the neighbors kids and my 2 ripped through the 32 acres of snowy fields on 4 wheelers with wheel barrow bodies tied to the rears for sleds. I have started a few new sets this year a.k.a. (W K F "fluff" sets)that I think will

This & That

Settling into the New Year Greetings my fellow collectors. I have wanted to post a journal recently but was sidetracked with an emergency home repair. Now everything is back to normal so some meandering thoughts. First, to all the award winners congrats. You set the standard for us to follow !!!! During the holidays I got out all my proof sets and decided to really give them a good once over since I haven't taken a good look at them in a while. I should preface this by saying one o

WHEN ONE STARTS A SET... or "OBSCURES" ONE

And a few additional comments. Why I touch on "controversial" issues is beyond me... Greetings Collectors, I am into my 6th year at the Collectors Society. My anniversary falls in late Nov. Each year around this time I look back on my past year and also think about what I want to accomplish in the coming year. I always make my 1st purchase of the new year, again, about this time and I have started my year off like this for about the last dozen years. A "green lid" mint tube of the newest sil

Happy to be Collecting Again

I am having fun doing it. First thing, congratulations to the registry award winners. I hope that one day I will be able to join all of you by earning an award myself. The first part of January has been busy, too much time at work and most of my spare time searching auctions. I have seen many items that I want, but the prices are way out of range for my budget. I know that looking and dreaming does not cost anything, so I will continue to do both. Just having fun collecting coins again is wh

Now I'm Really Embarrassed

But the presentation has been improved... Those of you who follow the annual Registry Awards and the journals are aware that I was honored this year with one of the Best Presented Sets awards for 2010. A couple days ago I wrote a journal in response to that. In it, I described the format and content of the descriptions I provided for each coin. My goal has been to update the descriptions of all my registered coins to that standard. I knew I wasn't yet done, but I gave myself an unpleasant su

Legacy

Nostalgia is a big reason that people collect coins, but for me there is a deeper reason. I have been neglecting my registry sets for a while. They are a humble bunch, but I enjoy adding to them very much. My father gave me his Lincoln penny set when I was a teenager and I have dutifully kept it all these years. Some time ago I got it out of moth balls and caught it up to date. It now has all the memorial coins, along with the 09's and the 2010's. These are raw coins, but they are unc dow

ARE WE A FAMILY HERE??

I tend to think we are. What do you, "the masses" think of this idea? Greetings Collectors, After seeing a pic of a fellow collectors son, it dawned on me that it might be nice to put a face on some of you out there. It started me thinking that if we all shared a pic of ourselves or one with us and the kids etc, it would be kinda cool and possibly bring us all even closer together. They're may be those of you that feel like that would be TMI (too much info & if so, don't do it.) Me, I do

and a couple small purchases. Hi everyone, I would like to say congratulations to the journal and set winners out there. They are all well deserved. It was very enjoyable and informative reading all the journal entries throughout the year. I also got great enjoyment looking through all the collections and following along when coins are added. My collection grew just a bit lately. I added an MS68 1982 Washington 50c commemorative. It took me awhile to find this coin in the edge view holder

A Christmas Present That Has No Equal

2011 looks to be an awesome year! The Christmas decorations are all down. All the visitors have made their way home. But this Christmas will forever be one of the very best I have ever had. Oh, Santa was great and there were presents a plenty under the tree for everyone. I got my new Lincoln Cents Albums and my 2010 Mint and Uncirculated sets for which I had been hoping and I got a gift I never dreamed I would get. The weekend before Christmas my wife and I drove 2000 miles (non-stop, round tr

The KING is for sale

A coin I have wanted since my beginnings as a collector. Friends and Society; Well Sunday is my day of rest and a peaceful day to do all the research I need to make the greatest purchase this Saturday that I could imagine. I have been fishing in new areas for coins and received a e-mail this week for a few rare coins. The seller must have quite the collection to offer such rarities. The first coin on the list is 1909s VDB AU53 which had a generous price. I recently purchased a 1909 VDB

Out of the blue

I?m honored and floored Well, it?s a typical Saturday morning. I had plans for today but they got scuttled because of the threat of winter weather which afforded me the unusual option of staying in bed this morning. Granted sleeping until 7:30 is sleeping late for me since I?m usually up at 4:30. The house is still quiet and my eyes are barely open. I turn the coffee on as pass on my way to fire up the computer. Okay, coffee in hand, computer booted up, eyes still having trouble focusing, it?

"Ebay Bucks" coin

Here's that photo Here is a photo of that Kennedy PF67 W UC I purchased with my ebay bucks cash back coupon. It is now part of my 1964-1970 MS & PF Kennedy set replacing a 1964 Accent Hair PF66CA. My goal for this set when I started it was to acquire PF67CA strikes of the proof examples and this coin achieves that very nicely.

HONORED BEYOND ALL BELIEF

Talk about a shock, well let me tell ya... Greetings Collectors I'm unsure why it is, but for the last three years I have always remembered when the "deadline" ends for those whose sets may be considered for awards, but have consistently forgotten the actual day the awards are announced. Not sure why Friday, the announcement day, blew by me again but it did. The 1st inkling I had was from a pair of early emails from two members here I know and respect. As I read the well wishes and congratul
