NGC vs PCGS
I hate the rhetoric that goes back and forth between NGC and PCGS collectors. I agree with Electric Peak that the Walker was wildly over priced... I've seen lots of examples in the Roosevelt series that are just plain stupid, especially when you consider PCGS grades 5x the coins due to the bulk submissions.
I have both NGC and PCGS coins in my set and I'll have to tell you that more than half of the PCGS coins are a disappointment to me when I get them. I buy them due to availab

I'll have the entire date run in MS, well kind of....
Two Morgan silver dollars arrived this week both NGC MS 63?s in edge view holders and filled the 1891 & 1897 slots in my Morgan Date Run Set. I started the set with MS63 intentions and thought I could pick up a 64 once in awhile when someone wasn?t looking. I?ve decided I?m going to hold off on filling the ?93 & ?95 slots until I die and have left instructions for my executor to fill those slots posthumously from my estate. Figure
A crazy auction result.
In last night's Heritage auction session, one of the Walkers I had my eye on, before bidding got insane, was a 1945-S PCGS MS67 CAC. The price guides, as quoted on the Heritage site, say the following: Numismedia retail, $2600; Numismedia Wholesale $2000; Numismedia PCGS (nmp), $1875; PCGS Price Guide $19,500 (Yes, $19.5K).
That last number is strikingly high, but recent Heritage results justify the price guide number. My guess is that it has to do with the PCGS reg
It has been interesting so far.
So in the short time that we have had 2011 on the calender, we have seen the points on our Lincoln Cent collections soar and them plummet. That was a fun ride for the 24 - 48 hours that it lasted. Now, Dallas was gifted with 5 inches of snow two days before the Super Bowl. Makes me glad that I had today off and that the mailman got me some coins before Snowmageddon let loose.
I got a very nice MS63 1884-O Morgan and a few Kennedy halves in the mail yesterda

is when it's time to sell...
When the dust settled after the Goldberg auction earlier this week, I had not spent too much money. So of course I had to remedy that situation. I had in mind several coins in the current Heritage auction. There was an AU 1823 cent (out of my range, but hey, I can dream), a few MS67 Walkers (one will be the subject of another journal), and some half dimes.
Among the old silver five cent pieces that hadn't already been bid beyond my current ability to pay, were a
A new Peace of the puzzle, More Full Split Bands and early release MS70 Silver Eagles.
Greetings Vibrant Community Members: I have added another high-grade coin to the new and improved Peace Dollar Set that I am building. A really brilliant 1922P NGC MS66. It will join the 1924P that will make up the five-year run of (22-26) of MS66?s that will anchor this set. I got both of them for quite a bit below Grey Sheet bid, which to me is the fair market value. Then I have always been pretty good at
Some are blue labels and some are........
Hi everyone,
It takes a bit of getting used to the new ER, blue labels. They do look great, and set the coin off with a brighter color. I also got my multiholders today, but alas, they are that same old boring burgundy. It says ER on the label, so I guess it's OK. I but the coin, and the label only states what's inside. I see the minor coins look great in the new label too!
May this trend continue and everyone get a set to put away.
Thanks to the
Early Releases to boot
My newest Kennedy arrived today. The 2011 PF70UC Clad with Early Releases designation. This is a first for the Kennedy coins. Never before have they been authorized for "Early Releases"
The photo does not do justice to this beauty. It is just so stunning. The cameo is unmatched. Needless to say I am proud to add this to my Kennedy set.
Much luck in filling those slots and hope everyone made it through whatever that was that went through here the other night and
Ramblings from the office
Hello fellow collectors. After perusing the journal entries for the last few months, I thought I?d tip-toe across the diving board and jump in with my own contribution. This is also a way for me to look like I?m working while not really working. For those Office Space fans out there, you know what I?m talking about.
This first paragraph is going to be the obligatory ?about me? section. You know, the life and times of Shanky. Honestly, it?s no great shakes, but I sta

...and we've had our 6 more weeks of winter in a day and a half. But this is a coin journal entry!
Hi everyone,
Well, it's a very, VERY white Groundhog's day here in southeastern Iowa. And before I go any further, my sympathy to the mideast and east who are probably getting the storm now that we had late Monday and yesterday.
I have finally (with a little help from a friend) cleared some snow in front of my garage and a path made to my side garage door. We received somewhere around 16-18 i

Other thenthat I been spending time looking through coin magizine to get ideas on what to purcha
I have no clue dhow to finish this set
My NGC MS64 morgans I believe I have all the common dates now lookin for the rarer dates. I do not believe I have the skill to do either Telatrade or Heritige Their is a coin dealer by me that I buy some coins from only if the price is right.
I was thinking the the super rare ones to buy some raw and sudmit them to NGC for grading. I want to concentrate on this set this year along with my NGC pf70/ms70 first spouse setwhich I think I will need help
Do "whatever" you have to, in order to take advantage of it. Unless you're like me, and the lack of extra funds stands directly in the way.
Greetings Collectors,
A year or so ago I made a comment in a post about the stock, General Electric. The stock had plummeted from $17 to $8 & change. Now I know we deal in coins here, but most of us are into other investments as well. My point in that post, in regards to GE, was that, this was an incredible opportunity because of the valuation, and t
It's amazing what happened last year.
Hey everybody,
Just a short note to let everyone know that their certificates will be arriving shortly.
I was amazed when I opened the envelopes. I didn't realize I had added more sets this past season. Pending the sale of most of my collection, I will not fare as well next year. Although the competition is great, I want to buy a home and relocate. My collection will become what the investment was meant for.
I will miss the rush every year, and will
PCGS is catching up!
Hi everyone,
Remember when you wanted to add a few PCGS coins, but they weren't available yet? A complete set of some would take almost the full year.
I see PCGS has 2011 proofs already graded and they are just barely out of the Mint. I am fortunate to have a few sets, and now I can enter them with the others as they come out. No more waiting months. It seems to make it easier for scanning and entering also.
I would love to have a few PCGS sets in 70, but at the pr
After my last post, did you think I wouldn't?
The fourth and final chunk of the Dan Holmes collection of large cents (his "late dates", 1840-1857) was auctioned by McCawley & Grellman / Goldberg Sunday. I had three targets going into that and today's Goldbergs' sessions.
First, I had my eye on an 1846 cent graded 66RB by NGC in today's session. It would be an upgrade to my 65RB. It had a low estimate of $800, and I figured a bid of $2000 might be enough, given that the hammer prices go
A place for the silver eagle.
Well we have a place to put the 25th anniversary silver eagle, like there is for the regular silver eagle at the control panel, yes or no. don

now the average person who collect might spend 3-500 a month on collecting like me.. well not really but i try to.. i have been catch side line deals in magazines like coin world and stuff , but the FMV this morning on wheat cents seem to drop especially when there not minting m
It?s harder than I realized.
I have started back collecting for about a month now and am finding it harder and harder to stay on track with my original goal.
My goal is to have a 21st Century Type Set (Proof) ranked as #1 by the end of the year and this will not be hard to do. I have seven PF-70-UC coins in the set at this time and the eighth one should be delivered by Wednesday. That leaves only ten more coins by the end of the year to achieve my goal and that should not be hard to accompli
How I added 1,320 points to my Registry Set AND put $710 in my pocket!!
There seems to be a lot of active discussion and controversy on Collector's Society Journals lately related to Registry points and how they are not fair, or seemingly random, and don't reflect current market prices or rarity of the coins. I now join the fray.
Can you imagine NGC trying to determine the points assigned to each coin in an attempt to fairly represent the worth and rarity of a particular coin in a particula
