That came out of nowhere

Congratulations to all the Registry Award winners. Today was a big day at work. In late 2009, a loved and respected leader at the Space Telescope Science Institute passed away. An annual award in his memory was set up, and the first honorees were named today. They are two of my friends, with whom I work closely on a regular basis. In the words of another co-worker, the selection committee chose wisely. With the events of the day in the back of my mind, I got home, went grocery shopping, mad

Do I Look Like I Was Born Yesterday

Don't be a chump Hi everyone. Was looking on Ebay today trying to add some Lincolns to my registry set when I came across listing number 200331820150. It is for a 2005D NGC MS69 Red Lincoln memorial. I made an offer for $95.00 which is a little over list and was rejected. I then realized the seller was asking $995.00 for this coin. Are you #%*@^+% kidding me. I ask the seller if I had misread the list price and his response was that this is a Business Strike coin and not a SMS coin. I

Cash back on 2010 purchases nets a great coin! After reading a journal posted by WKF last October (great tip by the way-thanks) I checked out the eBay bucks cash back program and decided to enroll. Just received my first cash back coupon for Xmas shopping and coin purchases on eBay during the last quarter of 2010. I have until February to redeem the coupon so I started trolling for something suitable thinking I could double the coupon and upgrade something. Last weekend I found an auction f

Musings Of My Sets

...an explanation! Well, probably everyone has noticed the wholesale (to a point) deletion of sets. I know I've touched on this in a few journal articles over the past year or so. Well, I've finally took some action. I really had to ask myself what my main interests are and how to achieve them on a limited budget. Well, the answer was to delete some sets so I could concentrate on my currency and what's really important to me. For example, while I like the clad Commemorative halves, the key w

1999 Wide Am Lincoln Memorial Upgrade NGC MS65 Red

Filling in the blanks and upgraded I recently added this NGC MS65 1999 Red Wide AM Lincoln Memorial too my set. I upgraded from a PCGS MS64 Red 1999 Wide AM. There are some nicer examples out there which are harder too find so I am pleased for now. The registry point values on these Wide AM coins is very high. 1333 points in this grade. AS always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

A "GOLD" SWISS MAIDEN AGE 76

There is some very "ornate" art in foreign gold. Hello again, The "obverse" features "Vreneli" or "Vrenelli", the Swiss Miss of Swiss lore. The lady with the plated (braided?) hair is facing left. She wears a garland of flowers (Edelweiss?) and appears against the background of the Swiss Alps. Above her head appears the word "Helvetia" which is why the coin is known as a Helvetia. The model for the portrait was Francoise Engli and looks quite attractive in her elegant floral gown and looks

Obscuring Collection - 2

DFJ I agree with Jay Ramsey only 50%. Privecy and Security only. However, if a collector wishes to be competitive you should reveal your coins. How can one compete if one does not know his competition goal? Competition means challenging your opponet, I can't challenge you if I don't know what you have. Suggestion: Maybe NGC can come up with a method once competitors get within the top 3 slots access to view obscure sets would be available to those competitors only. If your share the #1 spot

VINTAGE SWISS GOLD

I get very weak whenever I see "art" surrounded by yellow metal. Greetings Collectors, I trust everyone had a great new year weekend and that returning to work was not too much of a shock. I know I really didn't want to go in today. But I did. This was a piece I justified because I had a pretty fair weekend on "The Bay". I own a couple of 20-Franc French gold coins but this is my 1st Swiss piece. It was a "melt" buy but appears uncleaned and is "solid" 1/3rd up the "mint state" ladder. A few

2010 was a very good year

What in store for 2011? As I reflect on 2010 despite the fact the county was in the tank with the econony It was a very good year in collecting coins for me. The best year ever I got some quality coins. I started 2 NGC sets, got caught up on My Proof ASE, and worked on my Canadian S$5 coins. So I ended up purchase 17 coins and 4 sets. So My goal in 2011 is to work on my NGC 69 AES,and of course my weekly visits to the Pawn Shop just to see if they have anything new. So Iam hoping that this y

First Journal Of 2011

...not many mother mint coins in my collection. Hello all, First, happy new year to everyone!!! I certainly hope 2011 is a great year for everyone. It's starting out OK for me. I have a Canadian nickel on the way for my Canadian Nickel set. Purchases have been slow lately, for a few reasons. Of course, Christmas time always leaves me a little short of cash. Secondly, there are 2 Stack's auctions coming up this month and as always, I have some watched items in both of them. So I need to wat

And So The New Year Is Upon Us

The adventure in collecting continues The excitement of Christmas has passed and I find myself sitting here on a quite morning with my coffee and my coins about me. I got my new Lincoln Cents Albums, both the 2010 Mint and 2010 Uncirculated sets, and a 2011 Red Book. More than I could have asked. My 24 year old son was most pleased with the 1923 Large Note Silver Certificate we got him and he has been pouring through the Standard Catalog of United States Currencies he found under the tree. Another Year, Another Set

With the coming of a new year comes a new set of Morgan Dollars! Happy New Year everyone, this time of the year is a good time for contemplation and planning; contemplation of the past year?s highlights and low lights, and planning for the new year. Overall, last year was a good year for me as measured by the goals I set for myself. I have upgraded and/or added coins to my 19th Century type, first-spouse, Inspirational Ladies, and Britannia sets. A few of my goals, however, are longer term goa

WHAT DOES 2011 HOLD FOR OUR COINS?

Higher prices and after that... even higher prices. Greetings Collectors, The dawn of a new year and a new decade will be a "double edged" sword. I have followed prices closely on several different popular series through the course of this year and have come to the somewhat disappointing conclusion that all of the lacking spots in my sets are becoming more and more expensive. I have watched dozens of worthy specimens be bid far in excess of what I was willing to pay based on past auctions of

A Great Year Ending...

and another beginning... It has been a great year for me and my collection. I added only ten coins this year, but I'm very happy with every one of them. Because I'm "done" with the late date Large Cents, and nearly done with the middle dates, there wasn't too much activity there: I bought one upgrade in each of those sets, plus the 1828. Nevertheless, large cents are still my favorites. And there is still some excitement coming: The final installment of the Dan Holmes collection (late dates)

Tired of Me Yet?

This economy is great....or is it? I read Hunter's Gold post and wondered if the individual from whom he purchased the set was a friend of mine from right here in the Collectors Society home. I strongly suspect he was. Hunter, was to honor one of our fellow collectors by posting such a nice piece. I think it is true of pretty much everyone on the board that we collect for many reasons, only one of which is preservation of history. Nice job mate! Speaking of history, as some of you know I

Last coin in the mailbox for 2010

On my way out to ring in the New Year, Thought I had all my coins tucked away for the year an this Morgan showed up today. Just wanted to wish you all a Safe & Happy New Year! This 1892 O XF40 Morgan won't make the grade for my competitive set but she's well, "Extra Fine" and a certified example of a raw coin in my collection. All the best Collector's, See ya next year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Out of one year and off to the next. Hello everyone, It's been a hectic year for me. I spend as much time in the hospital as I do with my coins. I have, however, added a few upgrades, and just tonight finished my #1 2007 Complete Proof set. I wish everyone a prosperous coming year. I will try to keep my competetive sets at the top, even if they are for sale. Have a great evening, and hope to see you all here, and writing in the journal, for a long time to come. Best Wishes, John

RIP MY FRIEND

Thank you Bill Hello Collector Society. I posted my previous journal this morning thanking a fellow collector for entrusting me to purchase a large portion of his Lincoln Memorial Set. His mother called me about an hour ago to inform me that he had passed away yesterday. I knew he had been ill but this caught me completely off guard. So I would like to take this opportunity to express my sympathies for his family and friends loss and tonight Bill, as the New Year rolls in I will raise my g

End of the Year Blessings

Passing on a collection from one collector to another First off I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year. I would like to take a moment to thank a collector who I was very blessed to do business with this year. I won't mention him by name because I am not sure if he would want me too, but due to circumstances this collector placed his trust in me to buy the majority of his Lincoln Memorial collection. All I can say is how honored I am to give these coins a new home and how bl

LAST DAY OF THE YEAR

A coin addicted view for my New Year's Resolution Friends and Society, Well I do have some bad habits that need some psychotic evaluations and mental readjusting. But that will have to wait until a later time. Going through my sets that I started this year I have collected a little over 10,000 points. Spending a lot of time on auctions that I don't even end up purchasing a coin due to over price bidding. This year I have purchased some nice coins from 25% to 60% of value and having th

every once in a while you gotta go for the home run My most recent submission has reached quality control. Originally I was going to send a mix of things including my 2010 proof ASE's..but in the end I thought I'd take my 5 submission coupon and go for a long-shot with a potential big return. I sent 5 of my Walker MS66's in for regrade, hoping to get either an MS67, an MS66+ or an MS66*. You may ask what the big deal would be in getting an MS66+ from my MS66?..well I'll give you an example.
