An Old Favor Pays Off

sometimes even the good things you do come back to you.. We've all heard the old theme said in lots of different ways--"What you do comes back to you" or "what goes around comes around" or to borrow a verse from the Good Book, "As you sow, so shall you reap". No matter how it's said, I've found it true in life that the things that we do, do indeed come back around full circle. The good things as well as the bad. Coincidentally I had 3 events this week that came up. I've shared before that I'

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A CORRECTION...

There's nothing like feeling you've gotten a bargain... Greetings Collectors, The mailman was good to me today. I have met a real nice guy through eBay who has tons of Kennedy halves. He is a "Kennedy man" from the word go. He just sent me a full pristine roll of each 40% Kennedy less the "S" mint marks for the entire 1960's run. What makes these halves so nice is that each was from a "broken-up" SMS "special mint sets". All the coins at 1st glance look as nice as any "non cameo" proof in a

Was Dazed and Confused Now Humbled but Complaining Still !!

Adding a non-NGC/PCGS coin to a Custom Set begs the question ..... Why bother at all ?First...a big thank you to GHERRMANN44 for his help explaining that while you can add any coin to a CUSTOM set the kicker as he put it is that the coin and the information about it will not display ( kudos for his clever way of getting his to show though ).Thats very disappointing to say the least . What REALLY irritates me is that even the owner of the coin can not easily look at / access the addition to the

Am I really THAT DUMB ??

Adding a coin to an Existing Custom Set today made me feel like I wasn't too smart ........... Being on vacation yet again gave me a chance on a lazy Sunday afternoon to poke around in my better organized collection ( thanks to that LAST vacation 4 weeks ago ) and make some decisions . One was to add an ANACS graded coin to my sole existing custom set .I had actually kinda forgotten I even had this coin to be honest . But there I found it today right in front of a large stack of ANACS coins wi

ELVIS is in the HOUSE!

This pass summer we celebrated Elvis's 75th Birthday. This $2 bill is one of the items that I purchased! I know some people think it is wrong to color dollar bills! But it has been done, and they will have to live with it. Also, some think it is a waste of money! I'm a COLLECTOR and follow one rule: Collect only what you like! Elvis is someone I like and have a small collection of. I didn't purchase it thinking of a profit or loss. Just some I found appealing. To see old comments for

Walking a Tight Rope

Purchasing coins on a strict budget and the balance between registry points, grade, and eye appeal. Greetings all, buying coins for my New Orleans, Morgan Dollar registry set, ?Born on the Bayou? has been a challenge. In the past, whether I could reasonably afford a particular coin or not, if I liked the coin, I bought it. All too often, to buy the coin I wanted, I pushed back other priorities. The problem with pushing back other priorities though is that they eventually come back to nip you i

How much is a Coin Worth when there is no Known Previous Sale?

There is rare and then there is RARE! Presented here is a photo of a business strike of a 1977 Rhodesian ? cent. There were only 10 proofs struck while numerous business strikes were produced. However, all the business strikes were ordered to be melted down before any were released for circulation. But just like with our 1873 ?Open 3 No Arrows? half dollar some of the 1977 Rhodesian business strike half cents escaped the melting pot. For decades the Standard Catalogue of World Coins from 1

Newest arrival 2 Zlote

Animals of the world series continues. My somewhat small collection of NGC graded 2Zlote Polish coins just received a newest addition, 1998 2z, Toad. I tried to keep this one brief but.. well see for Yourself. I hope You like it. Larger photo is available from set view (200KB limit there, 75KB here). In my last journal I have shown the 2001 2Zlote Butterfly, today a few words about the series. Since 1996 aside standard circulation 2Zlote coins, there are issued semi-circulation 2 Zl

ASE Error

Mint made a goof I'm sure everyone received an e-mail from the U.S. Mint stating that their order for the 2010 ASE Proof Coin was sold out and their order was cancelled. I just got off the phone with the Mint and this was a computer generated error. So disregard and let out that sigh of relief,   moondoggy To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 3 BEAUTIFUL INDIAN HEAD PENNIES

These coins take me back to my collecting "roots"... Left to Right & Bottom: 1901, 1906 & 1907 Greetings Collectors, Taking a trip down "memory lane". These coins are some of the first coins I collected back in the "mid-60's". These, some Buffalo nickels, and some Mercury dimes, along with a few silver dollars, assorted Walkers, of of course, the "center-piece" of my collection, my 1810/09 Classic Head large cent. Wow, what memories. I think I use to get as excited, if not more so wh

The Turn of the Screw

Screw Press, that is... Picking up in the middle of my last post... At the Baltimore show on Thursday, during my journey across the bourse, I noted several coins I would consider buying. After the 1828 cent previously mentioned, an MS66 1853 no arrows half dime and an MS67/CAC 1945-D walker struck my fancy. They rose to the top of the list after checking recent auction results and price guides. There were several other nice coins, but the asking prices were just too high. I was ready to ent

THE 1942 DENVER - PRE-WAR COPPER JEFFERSON

AMAZING HISTORY OF THE 1942-D JEFFERSON: This Date being the Last-year minted,(Before the War nickels came out). Ive found that this has a Very Interesting History-Value to it,than a Monetary one. The 1942-D nickel is not a silver nickel. That year the Denver mint only struck this type that was .750 copper and .250 nickel. Imagine, being back in that Time/Era all this attenton was diverted when the US-Mint announced and spread the news about the New Silver Jeffersons being struck! Silver

Tough Find

Another very tough addition to my collection! I just added a great and very rare new piece to my Belgian Congo collection. It is a 1917 (H) 5 Centimes in Proof. It is graded NGC SP65 and super rare. I have been looking for one for the past decade and this is the first I have seen for sale and was lucky enough to buy it. I almost missed it somehow, as I did not notice it for sale in the World Coin News and almost recycled my paper but relooked for some reason and bam!, right there in an add

Mis-Adventures at the Baltimore Show

what a strange odyssey I hope that my collecting friend "Electric Peak" forgives my play on his title. I also attended the Baltimore Show this weekend (Saturday) yet my story starts a few days prior to that. You see, about a week ago, while browsing a few more of the obscure coin sites on my "Favorites" page--I came across a 1939-S Walker graded MS67 that really caught my eye. The price was substantial for my modest collecting habits so I thought I'd solicit some opinions from other collecto

Ahhhhhhhhhh

Everything back to normal Received an e-mail this morning from Dena stating she was having the software engineers looking into the value changes. Just checked and ALL values are "Back in Black" (sorry couldn't help myself - AC/DC) and back to the values where they belong. I knew moderns couldn't have devalued like that. moondoggy To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

An Error!

Unfortunately not in the ?Mint Error? variety, but in the understanding of coins expending money sort? this one truly is my insufficiently_thoughtful_person novice error? I was minding my own business, surfing the internet auction sites when the opportunity to purchase some graded coins with no reserve and no buyer?s premium appeared. I should have known to be careful, do some research? just don?t bid! Alas my clicking fingers got the better of me. What I didn?t really understand was that ?

Adventures at the Baltimore Show

You didn't think I'd miss it, did you? Yes, I attended the latest Baltimore show, and had another minor misadventure along the way. This time, I could manage only two days: Thursday and Saturday. There is simply too much going on at work for me to have taken Friday off as well. On Thursday, I arrived shortly after 10 AM, when lot viewing for the Bowers & Merena auction opened for the day. I was considering a handful of coins in the auction, and always enjoy looking at lots of nice coin

I Did Not Get The Coin!

But I did get a partner in crime? Well, the coin on which I wanted to splurge, an MS66 1971D Ike did not happen. Sadly, it was the budget that got in the way. Such is the life of a bottom fisher even when going out on a splurge. And while there was the bite of disappointment, it did not last. I have come to learn that everything happens for a reason and in its own time. So, all I can only say is that it wasn?t the right time. (This wonderful piece of wisdom is a precious gift from my wife.) A

SHOULD WE BE HAPPY .. or.. NOT???

Truly a "Double Edged" Sword that can "defend" from, or contribute to, our own "demise"... Greetings Collectors, I have been doing a lot of reading lately which leads to a great deal of thinking. My thoughts, while for the most part are positive, but at the same time, nostalgic and actually quite sad. We as collectors get interested in a certain coin series and most of us begin the quest and the chore of acquiring the pieces for those respective sets. The vast majority of sets require the sp

Inspired to make Dedication Set 1925 Mint Set

For who you wonder? After reading some best presented stories and a post by a fellow collector, i was inspired to create not just a "Best Presented" but a "Best In Category" for Mint Set 1925 in Memory of my Grandfather who started this road for me. I hopefully over time will gather all of these coins. i will update the journal in parts as i acquire these coins 1 by 1. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.
