The Start of my collection

This journal describes how my collection started and how it relates to my life growing up. As a boy I remember collecting coins with my dad and brothers. It was then that I became fascinated with the coins, the history and the time I spent with my Dad looking through the small collection we had and looking for new coins. It's like looking for pieces to a puzzle but each piece has a unique story and symbolizes a short time in our nations history. I shared the love of coin collecting with my

Started Collecting Coins Again,

and I am happy to be back. Two years ago the bad economy forced me to halt my passion of collecting coins. Not only did I have to stop collecting, I was forced to sell most of my collection. Now my situation is turning around and better times have arrived. I started building a Franklin Half MS Set, added several pieces to my Roosevelt Dime Proof Set, and added a 2010 MS-70 Silver Eagle to complete that set for at least a couple more days. Again, I am happy to be able to be collecting again

As a new year approaches...

What are your plan...? RUN, JUMP, SPRINT, OR WALK THE WALK AND TALK THE TALK... Hello to the Numismatic World, Year 2009... buy the book(s) before the coin(s). Year 2010... having a coin mentor, you heard "Talk the Talk" of the numismatic hobby (world). Going to show after show (talk the talk) for the past 12 months, it finally sinked in. I got stuff. Common stuffs. The mint made millions of them. Now I decided to clear the stale of the stuffs. It's called "Clean House". Except for some nice

The Incredible 1918 Mercury Dime

Is this the rarest dime of all??? One of my favorite coins is the Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) dime and I am currently working on a one-a-year registry set of Mercury Dimes. It is complete except for the 1918 dime which is currently a placeholder Details graded coin. I have been using Teletrade and EBAY for many months now to find a Mercury to add that is within my budget, say less than 150.00. A 1918-S in AU58 appeared on Ebay a few days ago and I kind of noticed it was attracting a gr

DELAWARE COMMEMORATIVE- COME FORWARD!

Football and Coins Once More The University of Delaware is once again playing for the 1AA National Football Championship this year! Just as in 2007, I have placed my Delaware 50 Cent in a place of prominence on my desk. On January 7th, I'll be in front of the TV clutching my half dollar. Thank goodness for plastic encasement. Your holders are "sweaty palm proof", aren't they NGC? GO BLUE HENS!!! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added belo

PAST COLLECTIONS "REWIND"

It's pretty cool going through all of the coins that we have picked up down through the years. Talk about "memories".... Greetings Collectors, For the kids it down to "clock watching" time and all are just counting off the minutes 'til they can open their stuff. I think I have heard somewhere that there will come a time when "ONE GIFT" will suffice from one loved one to another??? Is there like an "age cut off" when this is supposed to happen?? Anyway I'm just happy that I have all three kid

The End of the Year: A Review

Seven months already! How time flies. How is it that a website can become so addicting? Little did I realize when I started making some entries into the registry sets back at the start of June that I'd become so much of an addict. My original purpose was just to create an inventory of the few certified coins collected in the past. Then I became an addict. The first hit is always free (this site.) Addiction soon sets in and you establish your first tenuous goal. Mine was a complete MS66 set

AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM...

ME TO ME! Please don't take this as me being greedy because I'm not. This represents probably 90% of the dollars spent on dear old dad and they were spent by "yours truly". Greetings Collectors, As we approach this very happy time where most of the world does not celebrate this coming day for the real reason, I just want to say that the birth of Christ has got to be the single most important date in the history of the world. I for one am glad I know him in a personal way. Aside from this VIP

Another addition but NOT by me!!

More points!! Hi, First, let start off with my very best wishes for a joyous holiday season to everyone!! Now, on point (no pun intended), Just checked out my homepage and for the second time in 2 weeks I have free points!! 2,091 more than I had before noon! Not that I mind the change in score but, I looked at the coin that got the most change in points. I am by no means "up" on gold coins as they are out of reach for me right now, the $5 Gold Eagle 2009 MS70ER is not a rare coin. Acco

What Can You Do With $100?

If you are patient, you might just be surprised! Christmas break has finally come. With no school until after the New Year, the next 10 days or so are mine. Five of my six kids are already home for the holidays and my oldest daughter and her guy will be arriving Friday for the Christmas festivities on Saturday. Need I say that chaos reigns supreme in my house right now? My youngest son and I have already started pouring over coins to fill the holes in his albums and I have been on the hunt for

My last coins for 2010

2010 Eagle finally arrives with company. I've been waiting for my 2010 Eagle PF70UC coin to arrive and she had company, a 1958 Franklin PF66CAM and a 1904 O Morgan MS64. These are my last additions for 2010, unless I get a stocking stuffer, and also completes my first year as a member of this great community of collectors. It's been great fun! I am looking forward to the new year and all the great coins that are waiting for me. Happy and Safe holiday to you all, Merlin8* To see o

Viewpoint: Gradeflation Hurts Coin Collectors

Some longtime collectors, who remember the days before coins were professionally graded or slabbed, have never been thrilled with the service... From Numismaster Definition: grade inflation is the loosening of grading standards for the purpose of grading coins at a higher number on the 70 point ANA grading scale. Some longtime collectors, who remember the days before coins were professionally graded or slabbed, have never been thrilled with the service. We have always suspected that the ho

Last minute gift idea

Here's a great way to spend the holiday week with your kid - but hurry! A couple weeks ago, I ordered a box of half dollars (1000 x $.50 = $500) from the bank. I'd had my Whitman folders of half dollars for years, but obviously it wasn't going to get filled from circulation anymore. From that one box of coins, I was able to fill virtually my entire album. Okay, every slot after silver, except 1978-D, 1987-P, 1987-D, 2001-P, and 2003-D. You could buy a couple albums, fill every slot, and

Milestones & Competition

Reaching an important milestone for my collection and the coin that put me over the top. Greetings all, just three short months ago I wrote about possibly discontinuing my first-spouse collection. Now three months later I have a new perspective even though the price of gold has not significantly changed. First, I have a lot invested in this series already, and if I have the money to continue, I should. Next, I want to continue to add gold to my portfolio and these coins are a great way of doin

The year is almost over

Some last minute thoughts and goals for the coming year .... Holiday greetings all; As the year draws to a close I sit here and reflect on the past year and where my collections were at the start of the year and where they ended up as the year closes. I was fortunate enough to not only complete my Kennedy collection, but advance it with upgrades of numerous acquisitions. My goal for the coming year with this collection is to continue upgrading the Kennedy's as I can.... Another good
