Illness provides time for reflection

What got me started collecting? I?m stuck at home sick and have been using the time to get back to my coins and it occurred to me it?s December 7th. This date has significance to my family and as I pondered that thought I decided it would be a worthy entry to my journal.   I was exploring the bios of other members thinking of getting one together for myself. After reading a few I could see that these collectors have incredible stories of what got them started collecting and posed the quest

Nice Score !!

best "bullion" buy I've made in a long while I love to write at this time of year in my journal. I'm always hesitant to write too often during most of the year since I don't want to give the impression that I'm pushing for any award considerations. I remember a few years ago that one CS registry member actually wrote some kind of post every day for about the last 2 months before the awards. Most of the posts had nothing to do with coins and I don't even think the person bought a coin that whol

2011 Signature Set award category

As a way to allow those of us with limited means to compete meaningfully for a trophy next year, I propose the following award categories via our "Signature Sets." (1) BEST TONED MODERN YEAR SET. Minimum grade on all coins - MS 65. Exclude SMS in SMS years, since toning on those coins shouldn't really be competing with bank bags, rolls and other environmental hazards. (2) BEST MODERN TYPE SET ACQUIRED RAW (all slabs self-slabbed). Possible subcategories could include (a) acquired raw only

Discovering the Fun of Circulated Coins

some trial and error Well I've reached an impasse in my Walker collecting. The remaining slots in my mid-date set cost 4 figures+ in the grades I want. I don't have the continual funds to be shelling out whenever a hole-filler arrives and at the same time I don't want to keep buying lower grades which eventually get replaced in the future. I've decided to take a more "relaxed" approach to my interests for a while. My Barber Half set is the perfect medium for this. You see, I actually like th

An Amazing Sequence of Events!

Starting with my journal post of two days ago, follow the amazing events leading to the completion of ?Born on the Bayou?. Greetings all, it?s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here as I woke up to several inches of fresh snow! Not in any hurry to shovel snow, this cold winter morning offers me a great opportunity to sit with a hot cup of coffee and reminisce on the events of the past week. Two days ago in a journal post, I wrote about the difficulty I had in buying a MS-61 1892-

My Icelandic Kingdom Era Set

Only 10 slots to fill Well I finally completed adding all the coins in my set, with only 10 slots to filled. Out of the 10 slots, I have seven of them in unc that need to be graded and one, The 1933 25 Aurar that would properly grade a low end AU which would leave only the 1940 Proof 1 Krona and 2 Kronur. Only by a act of God would I ever acquire such coins. The Royal mint in England only produced the 1Eyrir to the 25 Aurar in proof and the King Norton Mint (ICI Imperial Chemical Industries ) m

and a few 50c commemoratives added! Hello all, Yesterday was a fine day...very quite at the station with no calls and I was able to get some paper work done. But what was exciting is that my daughter texted me to let me know that my SAEs arrived from the Mint! I ordered 3 of them and they all look awesome! After the bad news from the Mint that no proofs for 2009...then the great news that they will be minted for 2010...then the e-mail problems the Mint had..."sorry to say your order has been

Back to the Small Silver

Do I have the 'buy silver' thing down yet? After getting all the photographing done and posting about my new 1828 cent, I almost forgot to share my other new purchase, an 1853 no arrows half dime. Those of you following the prices of gold and silver - and reading the journals! - know that the price ratio recently fell below 50. Prior to 1850, the ratio had been 15 1/2. But all the new gold from California upset things, effectively raising the price of silver. As a result, silver coins were

Another Year Almost Gone

How did my goals do? Hi everyone, Well, my main goal for the year was to finish my FBL Franklin set. At the start of the year, I needed to upgrade 5 coins and purchase 20 more. Well, the upgrades were easy. All 5 are now at least 64's, and the coins I upgraded are now residing in a more or less ungraded set. As for the 20 I still needed, I purchased 14 of them. I knew the 53-S would be the major stumbling block, as it turned out all of them seem to be. Except for the 53-S, I saw the coins I

One More to Go

25 coins after I started ?Born on the Bayou? on August 29, 2010, I have one more coin to go. Greetings everyone, three months ago, on a whim, I started a complete set of Morgan Dollars based on the New Orleans Mint, and now I stand within one coin of completing my set. With a strict budget of $200/coin, the last coin, the 1892-O, is proving to be quite a challenge to obtain in MS condition. Since I only get three points for an AU example, I am targeting this coin for MS-61 and 265 points. Curr

NEW ISSUES AT YOUR LOCAL "RETAILER"?

Who wudda thunk it??? Greetings Collectors, I was up early this morning to be at a local retailer for some huge electronic bargains for a couple of Xmas gifts for my two teenage boys. They opened at 8am and I was out front at 7:15 to be 1st in line. I had my latest issue of Coin World to keep me company which is an issue I would recommend to all. It touches on all of the "highlights" of the past decade with in depth articles on everything from the State quarters to all of the coins that have

Wheaties Galore

Looked thru a bunch of Lincoln Wheaties! Well, my Lincoln wheat penny albums are a little fuller tonight. My project for this week, as I'm on vacation after having some dental surgery yesterday, was to look thru close to 10 rolls of wheat cents. Some things surprised me. I thought I would find more D and S mints than I did. However, the most common coin I found was the 1957-D, which doesn't surprise me since I live west of the Missippi River, but other than those, some 56's and 58's, I didn'

2010 In Review

It was a fun year. I would like to take a few minutes to jot down some thoughts about my collecting this year. I count myself blessed that in a tumultuous economy, I was able to continue collecting, albeit in a diminished capacity. I had set a goal at the beginning of the year to amass 20,000 registry points. It appears I will fall a little short of that goal, but I made great strides. It's a lot of fun to compete against other collectors pursuing their love of the hobby. I anticipate b

Where to hide your valuable coins ?

It has to to be a (SAFE) place for me Like many coin collectors in this great registry, I realized where to keep my coins a long time ago. A lot of collectors asked me where do I keep my collection. The answer is " a gun safe " .I went to my local sporting good store and purchased a 3 foot deep and 6 foot high gun safe for my coins. I had a choice of a dial or digital mechanism to open the safe. I perfer the digital, because it is a little easier to remember the numbers and it beeps of over a w

It?s All About Passion!

The definition of passion is, ?The object of somebody?s intense interest or enthusiasm?, and suitably applies to my love for coin collecting among other things. Greetings all, my father always told me, ?If something is worth doing, to do it right the first time.? Consequently, whenever I put my mind to do something, I do it with passion. This applies to all areas of my life, up to, and including coin collecting. How else can I explain the expenditures and time I spend on this hobby? As an extr

Would you like a FREE Mercury Dime?

Not too many things for free out there, but this is one that is! Greetings Collectors, I've been selling some silver bars lately... unfortunately... But that's the reason I listed them. It's just always hard to part with something "tangible". I also have a few coins I am watching and kinda trying to build up the reserves before I start "pulling the trigger. Silver has been back and forth of late and any significant "pullbacks is a great buying opportunity. I have also been fine tuning a few

Howdy to all

Just left Morgan Heaven Friends, Sitting around checking out Chat boards. Clicked on U S coins and found a thread on Morgan Dollars (WOW!!!). The thread surely inspires a coin nut (like me) to run out and purchase at least one for their collection. You guys sure have some great pics. Things are good in this neck of the woods, I am slowly adding to my sets. HAPPY COIN COLLECTING

It?s the Little Things That Make This Hobby Great!

Or how a simple MS66RD penny reminded me of my youth. The mail came yesterday afternoon and expecting nothing more than the usual barrage of holiday sales flyers, the short walk down to the end of the driveway started out as nothing more than the daily ritual. With the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in full swing, I did not expect any of my recent acquisitions to arrive until early next week. My wife and I had just finished decorating the Christmas tree and we had begun our usual transformation
