ALEXANDER WESTERFALL COLLECTION

Two of the "top five" of favorites in my collection... Greetings Collectors, And fellow "silver lovers". I went to the bank today to drop off some Kennedy halves and decided to pick up a couple of my silver bars to bring home and "play with". (does anyone else have a problem like this?) Everything stays locked up and out of reach so it's only seldom that I get to spend any time doing such as this. I had just picked up the "ultra scarce" 20.41 ounce bar at auction from Alexander Westerfall Sm

A Couple More Beauties on the Way to NGC for a Fresh Look

These two registry quality coins are sorely needed in my set ...as I get closer to the finish line ........Here are the last two slabbed quarters I have dug up to send off to NGC along with the aforementioned 1932-P . The coin on the left is a 1939-D 25 cent graded MS-70 by SGS ( no that's not a joke but it could be ) the coin on the right a 1942-S MS-65 by ANACS . Looking both coins over together I am going to " place my bets " that the 39-D will come back as an MS-64 ( it's borderline MS-65 t

Some Modern 50c Commemoratives

upcoming coins and a finished project...FINALLY!! Hello and good day to everybody, I wanted to share a few coins that I purchased over the last few days...1991 Mt Rushmore 50c and 1995 Olympics/Baseball 50c commemoratives grade MS-69. The 50c comms are very inexpensive at this grade and very easy to find. It leaves me with only 8 more coins to go to finish this set. I was also very happy to hear the the Mint will be issuing the 2010 Proof SAEs in a few weeks. I forgot that I still had a su

Last One

The final piece of my VF+ early Walket set.. I just added a 1921-D Walker, NCG VF-25 to my set. With this last piece in place, my set now meets my original goal of VF or better in the 1916 through 1933 dates (most are AU through MS-64; the 1919's and 1921's in AU are way out of reach) and MS-64 or better for the 1934 through 1947 dates (most are MS-66 or MS-67). The upgrades keep getting more expensive; it will cost close to four figures to upgrade anything in the set now, but I'll keep look

Picked up a 1/10 2002 Panda 8 years ago, lost for a while and found a few weeks back...

$86 well spent - in 2002... In 2002 I purchased two 1/10 Gold Chinese Panda(s) for one to eventually be given to my wife as jewelry for a bracelet - never got around to it and misplaced the coins. Eight years later I re-found the two Panda(s) still in the mint packaging and knowing the population of 30 I decided to send in the coins to NGC. One came back MS 70 - 1 of 1 in the population of 32 and the other came back MS 69. A super nice little find and I'm sure I'll have to make it up to the

An Old Beauty Headed to NGC for a Fresh Look

This high grade quarter lacks only a re-certification from NGC to be entered into it's registry final slot !!I am not sure how many of you readers may have had experiance with an old company called PCI , but I for one was generally pleased with the quality of grading services from them over the years and I still have numerous examples . In particular is one 1932-P Washington Quarter MS-67 ( PCI ) . This heavily toned gem is being packaged up this month along with some others so that I can get

Sometimes it seems as if I am One-Dimensional

While I am currently concentrating on Morgan Dollars, I have not lost sight of my other goals. Greetings all, three of six of my last posts highlighted my latest rage, primarily New Orleans minted Morgan Dollars. With my enthusiasm focused singularly on one registry set, it seems that my other sets were overshadowed. However, it would be wrong to confuse overshadowing with inactivity. With an eye towards all my sets, whenever I have had the opportunity to add to my collection in accordance wit

Spent a Lazy Sunday Organizing some Collecting Chaos And .....

Found a few forgotten treasures !!! I spent my first full day of vacation today trying to bring order to a disorderly collection mess . After several wretched hours of grueling work , I was pleased to have it all finished . Yes , it really WAS alot of hard work but truth be told I found some real thrills as I re-discovered some forgotten treasures like these AU/BU Mercury Dimes that had sat in an envelope in a box for 4 years . And there was the bag of Silver Canadian Halves . And the VG 189

Way To Go Idaho!

A boy and his toys (proverbially speaking) I once heard that he who dies with the most toys wins. Given that condition, I doubt I will ever win. But my coins are, in a very round about way, my toys. Usually, I feel very happy to pick up one or two very nice graded coins and/or fill a couple of holes or upgrade a few coins in my albums over the course of a month. But October has been an unusual month so far for me and we are only about half way through it. I must, by necessity refrain from chas

A New Direction

Staring on Certified coins Well now that I am all caught up on Proof and UNC Silver Eagles. I am now on the hunt for the Certified Silver Eagles. But I have a question? I dont want to be taken advantage price wise. and beside getting some help from the Shop I frequent, any suggestion would be helpful. I never started collecting to make a profit I do it for a hobby and like everyone else has a limited about of spending money on coins. It like baby steps one at a time. Iam thinking about grades

PASSIONS, How best to describe them?

Passions are many for some & few for others... Greetings Collectors, The passions I have had in my life are not that many, but yet I have never really thought about it, as far as counting how many I have or have had. Besides the three "F's" which are Faith, Family & Friends, I branch off into natural & tangible. Many of you know a great deal about my life, my up-bringing and my current state of affairs. With the health issues I have, and those I am facing, I've been doing a lot o

Newest Washington Silver State Quarter Proof Addition

Assembling This Modern Set has been a BLAST !!! Today I received one PF-70 UC Nevada Silver State Quarter to add to my Registry Set . I know I am a quarter-nut ( my first Journal Post tries to explain that ) but I really am at a loss as to why more people on the NGC Registry have opted out of collecting this terrific series , which has personal meaning for practically anyone as we have all literally lived in one state or another at some time unless we reside in a US Territory ( yep and there's

A big assist today

A really nice postal clerk Spent the better part of last evening going through the coins I was getting ready to submit to NGC for grading. Got em all packaged up and called it a night knowing I would take them to the P.O. tomorrow (today). To my surprise when I arrived at the P.O. on this side of town it wasn't busy (unusual) so I went right up to one of the service stations to send off my box. A lady clerk was waiting on me and when I told her how much I wanted to insure for and with posta

FIRST YEAR WALKER OF THE MIDDLE SET

I really think the detail on this coin exceeds MS-64. If it were sent back in, I'm confidant it would at least get a + if not a full grade bump to gem-65 Hello, Just wanted to share an obverse of my new Walker half, filling that very 1st slot in the "middle set. I think it's a "beaut". Happy Collecting all!

A "WONDERFULL" SITE TO COME HOME TO...

There is nothing like coming home and having some new "goodies" to spend the weekend with... Greetings Collectors, When I pulled into my drive this afternoon, there was a couple of the "big keys" missing from the large boxes at our mail kiosk. And when I opened my personal box, there lay one of those keys. My last barrage of buying earlier this week had arrived for the most part. I still am expecting a couple more parcels and they should arrive tomorrow, or at the latest, Monday. I traded a

I Would Like To Thank NCS And NGC

My 1925 2 Kronur Well after nearly 8 years of searching for a Ex-Fine or better gradable Icelandic 1925 2 Kronur coin with a mintage of only 126,000 coins, My search has finally come to an end with much more then I ever expected result from my NCS/NGC submission. I obtained this coin from a Icelandic coin club auction back in early September. My friend in Iceland went to the auction on my behalf to bid on this coin for me but what was more interesting about this was that the coin was graded at

WHAT CAN/SHOULD AN INVESTOR/COLLECTOR DO???

Do not fear what you may think as a bubble. It just "AIN"T so... Greetings Collectors, All of us have been following the meteoric rise in the materials our "beloved" coins are made of. This has me, as I'm sure, most of you, in a questionable position. I can say that of all the investments I have made over the years, that which I never really classified as an investment, has turned out to be the "most profitable" investment, at least on paper. I have tried to recall just what was my "mindset"

Did someone say Silver?

A sweet little purchase Although my primary numismatic interest is those grand old large cents, those of you who read my posts know I also have an interest in anything with "half" in the denomination, especially half dimes. I picked up another from Heritage's Long Beach auction a few weeks ago. When I was nearing completion of my initial collecting goal (the late date large cents, one per date), I started on another goal, a set of proof half dimes (1858-1873). That seemed like another achie

WILL THESE COINS "EVER" BE WORTH ANYTHING?

I was "caught up" in the frenzy like many of you,...but... Greetings Collectors, I can remember very clearly the year was 1999. The State Quarters were about to begin. I had been buying "mint products" for at least 10 years and not just one, but several of each. My "mindset" was I had to have 3 of everything so that my three children would each be able to have one after I was gone. I ended up waiting too long to buy the proof sets in both silver & clad, and they had "sold out" for that v
