Slow Week

Minor additions to 1957 set. This has been a slow week. I've added one new coin to the 1957 mint set and have another on order as an upgrade. Like a lot of others here on the site, I've cut back and don't look to add anything unless I can add to the 1957 set. Other than that I'm going to stop purchases until after the election and a new Congress is sworn in after the New Year. This economy can only be described as bull excrement. Much the same can be said for the current administration.

A few New Additions

And God Bless the 343 who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 so others may live on. I am very happy to say that I have been able to add 5 more commemoratives to my slowing growing collection. 1993 1991-1995 WWII 50c MS69 1993 James Madison Bill of Rights 50c MS69 1995 Civil war 50c MS70 I have been going after the 50c comms more then the $1 lately and I have about 10 more to go to finish that collection. I should have that done in about a years time. I think it's a great way for y

This Too Shall Pass

There is more to this hobby than paying through the nose for new coins. Well, it looks like the economy is raising hell in the metal markets again. Gold is at an all time high and silver is not much further behind. Of course this translates to some people paying outrageous prices for coins, raw and graded, because they see it as a safe haven. You just have to love John Q. Public! Now is definitely not the time for me to be chasing coins on the auction sites or trying to negotiate lower prices

Errors Everywhere!

Sometimes you don't mind when things go wrong... Next weekend, the Goldbergs will be starting their pre-Long Beach show auction. On Sunday, 9/19/10, there will be a special session devoted to two collections of early copper errors. The Davy collection of half cent errors has 368 lots. The Holmes collection of large cent errors brings the total to 635 lots of errors. (Actually, some of the items are electotypes, altered coins, etc., but you get the idea.) Nearly all dates of half and large cent

Crack Out Results (Photo)!!!

George Made it Home... ...just wanted to add a photo of the Washington that came back as 67+*! The dark spot to the right of Washington's bust is actually a shiny spot on the coin. It looks much better than my photos (as usual)... Thanks for looking! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

"WINE, WOMEN, and SONG!

I agree with Kerry its time to cut back on buying coins! During the time I was sick and before, I was buying raw coins. BUT didn't have the engery to submit them for grading! Now I've been submitting them and saving for for more important things! Like WINE(oh I forgot we don't drink wine, it will have to be coca cola), WOMEN (My Wife she is having a birthday this month and next month we will be married 47 years! So she deserves to be treated nice), SONG ( I can't carry a tune in a bucket. B

Replacing The Expence of "BUYING" with the Fun in "LOOKING"...

Have you ever really contemplated the loss of one of your "major senses"? Such as being able to see??? Greetings Collectors, I want to thank all who have written me of late. I never tire from hearing from a fellow collector. I have a real passion for this hobby as I'm sure most of you do. In fact, it's such a passion, rarely a day goes by that I don't pull out a past issue of Coin World or Numismatic News or the many other monthly publications and read or re-read an article. I will also some

BACK TO THE HOBBY OF "COIN COLLECTING"

There sure are some beautiful coins to be had for those that have the $. Greetings Collectors, Forgive me for my last post (I have followed suit of the C.S. member in question, and deleted my post as well) but what was said was way too much to keep my mouth shut about. But now, I'm over it for the most part and just want to say "Gary" don't change a thing. Keep the excellent posts coming. You didn't make "Journal Author" for 2009 for nothing. I have stopped my buying for the most part due

Morgans

Just pawing around in my junk silver box. I don't know about every collector, but I suspect many have a junk silver box. Mine is filled with an assortment of coins from many sources. Some are from my change. Yes, I look at my change and about once a year find a silver coin. Foreign coins make up about a quarter of the contents. I've only taken the time to identify that they have silver content. Most are circulated and some like an 1871 Canadian Dime are nearly impossible to identify. Ab

A New Addition

A great looking coin for a modest price Greetings once again, Well as luck would have it, I acquired this 1979 Type 1 Kennedy in PF70UC on the first of the month. I say luck because it was one of those things that you bid an opening bid on and no-one else made a bid. I was in total shock when I received an e-mail informing me I was the winning bid. I couldn't get it paid for fast enough. It arrived in today's mail. This acquisition really made my month. Hope everyone had a great Labo

A Sentimental Journey

In a story that has all the elements of a good drama; follow the journey of my lowly 20-cent piece from the time I purchased it until its crowning glory! To lay a little groundwork to this story, misfit coins have always intrigued me. You know the type, the half-cent, two-cent, three-cent, and 20 cent pieces. Moreover, coins minted at out of date branch mints such as New Orleans, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and Carson City captivates my imagination. At my very first coin show as a youth in the mid

RE: I Finally Found A Icelandic 1925 2 Kronur

What A Disappointment But All Good Things Comes To Those Who Wait About two weeks ago I received my auction lot I won on August 15th which had a 1925 2 Kronur in it, Which looked really nice and I thought it would grade an AU but when I held the coin in hand it looked horrible to say the least. I guess the auction house must have used some kind of scanner that left a lot of the detail out of the surface of the coin that made it look so much better then it was,,,I was really amazed at the diffe

2010 Buchanan Business Strike President

Could this be the key date/President for the series??? With the NGC census updated today, I am quite surprised with the low population that was graded for this president. Has some dealers stopped grading the presidents already? Has the collector walked away from the series this soon? I believe it is just a lull before Lincoln dollar is released then watch everyone's brother hop on board if they never collect another president. I will make my prediction now and say that the Buchanan dolla

The SAE Mystery Continues

Will they or won't they ? Placed a call to the Mint tonight to straighten out a shipping problem and during my conversation, I asked about the ship date of Silver American Eagles (Proof) The customer service rep whom I was talking to laughed (she then said, "excuse me I forgot to push the mute button") and told me she too is a collector of these fantastic coins. I then asked if there was STILL a shortage of Silver for the program and she said YES !!! My next question was when will the "Offi

Well Trying Again

It is so nice to jump back in, although only half a pinkie toe deep Nice to see the same faces around with the same dedication to their lifelong pursuit. I have recently purchased a couple of NGC Lincolns (2009) only MS-66 which rankles the heck out of me BUT it is better than nothing which is the alternative. Who knows where the wind might next blow but for now, I remain an avid, although mostly inactive. Great job to all of you who continue your pursuit in your passion. I hope to be able

Here I Go Again!

Is there any cure for this disease? I hope not! Just the other night, while I was reading the owner description on my 1907-O Barber Quarter, I thought (thinking can be dangerous) wouldn?t it be nice to start a complete set of Morgan Dollars based on the New Orleans Mint? There has always been an attraction for me in the New Orleans mint ever since I learned of its history. Discovering that the New Orleans Mint may not have reopened after the Civil War had it not been for the Bland-Allison Act

A New Member to The Family

Actually, a couple of new members Payday has come and gone, everyone is still asleep, the coffee is hot and the morning is cool. It?s the weekend and a long weekend on top of that. I?ve been up for a couple of hours and I?m immersed in my coins once again. With the first payday of the school year comes my re-entrance into active acquisition of coins for my sets. So far, my budget is still good. Let?s just say the budget of $50 a month is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. This ye

Crack Out Results!

Success finally... This is my first Journal entry so be kind in your replies (if any). My favorite journals have always been the ones where members tell of their successes (or failures) when cracking out coins and resubmitting to NGC. I've tried the "crossover" track several times with limited success but wanted to share my first experience with cracking out the coins. On a a couple of recent submittals, I cracked out four coins as follows: (1) 1964 Japan 100 Yen Olympics, NNC, MS67, (2)

Back In the Top 10

Temporarily, at least Today's mail brought the 1942-S Walker I was surprised to win in last month's Heritage auction. I replaced the MS-65 I had in my Walker sets with the MS-66 that arrived today, and th epoint difference was just enough to get my full (1916 - 47) set back to #10. This probably won't last long, but at least for now I am in the Top Ten in all Walking Liberty categories - #10 in the full set, #10 in the Short (1941 - 47) set, and #9 in the "Other" (1934 - 47) set. Platinum coin hype

I believe the 2010 platinum coins sold out because the mint is starving the public with the lack of minting decent collectable coins. Why should we buy a 2010 Platinum coin which has a total population of 10,000.00? You can buy the 2006, 2007 or 2008 Platinums with a much lower population. The 2006 through 2008 platinum coins have a total mintage of less than 25% in comparison to the 2010 proof edition. Is the public following hype or basicly not doing their homework? The total population
