modern business strikes

Slabbing coins whose base cost is face plus gas to the bank It's unrealistic to judge the recession from collector journals, or even coin collecting as a whole ... BUT I'm not the only one here whose income is worse now than a couple years ago. And that's without even losing a job or having ongoing medical costs. And I'm not the only one who's collecting differently because of that. So, I continue to have lots of fun with modern business strikes. Sure, ten rolls of nickels from the bank

Computer Problem

Led to NGC Website Problem Last night was not much fun, as I had 5 new coins to enter into my collection on the website. In addition, I had finished taking and editing pictures to once again bring my pictures to 100% on the website. However, when I tried to log into the website, my computer was dragging and not loading the pages. Ironically enough, it was only doing this with NGC's website! It was very frustrating. I felt like a kid who had received his allowance and raced down to the ca

Reflections on Collections...Problems...Addictions...etc

I really don't know why I do what I do... Greetings Collectors, I just rolled back into town after a short trip to the country with my two boys 12 & 14. We went out to my dads for a few days and took a pile of firearms and literally "shot" a couple hundred dollars in various types of ammo. They had a bunch of fun but my mind was on my coins. The 38,44,45 & 30-30 shells were a small part of a very large hoard left over from my dads pawn shops but I still could not keep from thinking o

10th Anniversary Eagle set certified

Satisfied yes, overjoyed no... As mentioned in an earlier post, I submitted six old proof sets, my 2009 UHR, and my 10th anniversary eagle set for NGC certification at the last Baltimore show. The coins arrived "home" a week ago. The one that I cared most about was the UHR. I was going to be more than disappointed with less than MS 70. The coin was ordered about an hour after the Mint's website started accepting orders (despite starting the process at the start...), and was received in time

COLOR CODING COPPER COINAGE

When does BN become RB; become RED? Over the years, I've become fairly comfortable with my grading skills. This confidence has generally been confirmed by results from certification or sale. Reliance on TPG's has made me a bit lazy and my grading skills a bit "rusty". But, one issue that has always given me a degree of discomfort is assessing the color designation of copper coinage. Sure, solid BROWN and bright RED are easy, but when does BN transition to RB? And what is the demarcation

It is difficult

when you aren't adding to your collections Greetings once again. Well, it had been sometime since I last added anything to my collections so I fed the monster that resides inside all of us and purchased this 1921 Morgan. Nothing monumental but a nice "gem" Morgan that filled an open slot. Guess my honey-do list just grew some................ best to all Moondoggy

A Tale of Two Auctions

Two very different E-Bay auctions. The purpose of this post is not to comment on the merits of E-Bay, but to describe two recent positive auction experiences. Many of you know of, and participate in the E-Bay Bucks program. With a fresh grant of E-Bay Bucks in July, I?m sure that many of you, like myself, went shopping for new coins. Two coins that caught my attention were an 1832 MS-61 Classic Head ? Cent and an 1837 XF-40 Capped Bust Half-Dollar. Both coins would have filled empty slots in ?

Slab-Renew

Who Knew? learned a lesson today that I really was surprised to find out. I was polishing one of my NGC certified slabbed coins and low and behold Slab Renew removes the Hologram from the slab. Yes part of the hologram on my 20th Anniversary PF70 Silver Eagle is gone along with some of the scratches. So to all who use slab renew DO NOT get it on the hologram or it will not be there long. First Spouse Gold

The Hidden Long Term Value The true value of the First Spouse program will become apparent gradually over time as political clout of American women grows. I make my living studying political and social trends. When the FS program was announced, Hillary Clinton still had a decent shot at becoming the first female president. This introduced the prospect of 'his and hers' Clinton presidential and FS coins...with the added bonus of the first male first spouse coin. I'm not arguing that the FS pr

Die Clash?

Please give me your opinions. Good afternoon, everyone. I am looking to start a weekend of relaxation and catching up on my numismatic reading. However, I finally got around to taking a good picture of a particular coin. I believe that this is a die clash. You can notice a partial impression of the Lincoln Memorial on the backside of President Lincoln's head. That is my opinion, but the joy of this website is that I get to pick the brains of those more experienced than I. Please let me

I never will stop collecting!!!

I never will stop collecting!!! This has just forced me to re-evaluate my collection and its future. So recently if you have read my previous journals I stated that I have significantly downsized my collection due to hard times. This being said I have also adjusted my sets to reflect my coins that I no longer own, which saddens me. I am undetered in my collecting however. Instead of procuring new coins, graded or ungraded, I am going to adjust my strategy. I currently have quite a few co

1964 Jefferson Nickel NGC MS66*

Obtained a 1964 Jefferson Nickel NGC MS66* from Bowers & Merena for $98 on 6/18/10. I already own an MS67 but that coin has a worse strike and much less eye appeal than this coin. The auction was won using a max bid of $150. Bowers & Merena Auctions The June 2010 Baltimore Auction Paddle Number: 9025 Lot #: 1703 Description: Iridescent multicolored toning is most vivid along the upper-obverse border. A gorgeous Gem that really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. NGC

Sacagawea Question

Big price difference between NGC Graded Sacagawea and PCGS graded. I have a question for you pros out there. I have a PCGS MS67 Goodacre Presentation Sacagawea dollar. PCGS lists this coin, in my registry, for $700. When i added it to my NGC Registry it was given a value of $18.75. Why the BIG difference? MS67 population is low and very few are graded higher. Heck, only 5000 of these dolls were made. Any thoughts? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be ad

Received first coin

I just received my first coin today. It finally came in the mail and I was stoked to get my hands on it. What a beautiful coin. The case seems like it was tampered with though. I need to get that checked out. I have contacted the seller about the issue and have contact NGC about the, what seems to be, cracked case. We'll see. I hope I don't get screwed on my first purchase. Waiting Game Ends, & Starts Again...

I think coins must be like a "narcotic fix"... Greetings Collectors, Today was a busy one for me. Several errands and two doctor appointments. The day started off not so good as I was informed I have cancer. It's skin cancer from having been cooked on most every island within a thousand miles of here for the last 30+ years. I have a place on my arm that has gotten considerably worse and another below my left sholder blade. I have had a feeling that this was what it was but didn't want to acc

"Don't Get RIPPED OFF"!!!

I am hearing more and more of this... Greetings Collectors, I had to have my computer picked up and taken to the shop as it was just getting way too slow with all the "sludge" that builds up. Before Alpha left I had him hook up a Sony Vio that had belonged to my daughter before she went away to school. I have Vista on mine and she has Windows XP. Going to stop using Ebay/PayPal

This monopoly has jerked me over for the last time. I remember when Ebay and PayPal were seperate companies. Both of the companies treated you fairly, because they wanted your continued business. Now, they are a combined company and they have gotten so large now they can screw over anybody they want, and they don't care. Case and point. On June 6, one of my auctions ended, final selling price, a whopping 6 bucks and change. 3 bucks to ship (because paypal/ebay require proof of shipping),

Just back from the F.U.N Show in Orlando again

Eye candy of the 3rd kind.. Hello again: Just back from the Orlando FUN exibit. This is a local club, not as big as the main show in January,or the one coming up in Boston in August but I had a lot of fun and learned a bit with my short available time there. I met with PCGS people, very nice, but seems I can get precisely what I want with staying with NGC and it is less paperwork too. I accept into my orphanage, for now, only NGC and PCGS, although, I guess some of the other grading comp

Customer or victim? Client or dupe? Collector or mark? Investor or fool?

Am I a product of a good home, trusting or just plain stupid? Have any of you folks been 'taken' by your trusted coin dealer? What did you do? What can someone do.I sure would like some feedback here. Some of my collection has been obained, I think, from con men who scammed me into thinking certain coins were worth much more than they were. Dropping by

It has been awhile since I was last here Greetings my fellow numismatists. Well it has been some time since I've last posted a journal and sometime since I have acquired a coin for my collections. As most of you know I moved this Spring and it has taken some time and funds to get settled into the new "digs". My attention has been on designing and building my "Home Theatre". I almost have it complete. I am using a new InFocus projector, with a 92" diag. screen. Controlled lighting, etc.
