PCGS Lawsuit against big names in the industry! the real "big one"

Well i thought the "big one" wasnt that big...but this lawsuit that PCGS has just announced is going to make a lot of people unhappy....get ready to check your coins! Below is the original story regarding the PCGS lkawsuit against a number of coin doctors, the real "big one"! I for one am very pleased with this announcement but when i read the names of who is involved i started to get worried! These are big names in the industry, especially when it comes to buying and selling coins to coll

Holmes Middle Date Shutout

I got a few hits, but no runs. As I write, the Goldberg's sale of the Dan Holmes middle date large cents is winding down. I had in mind to obtain a nice 1828 cent and/or a nice 1829 for my registry set, and perhaps some decent circulated pieces for my old Whitman album. No luck... During the past week, I decided to call the auctioneers to ask to be a phone bidder. Even though I had no trouble on-line last fall during the Naftzger late dates sale, I recalled that some folks did have difficult

Just a pic of the Reverse "UP CLOSE"

What a coin, to say the least...Does this look AU-58??? Sorry for "hogging" the journals but I promise to "give it a rest" 'til the next post on photography. But I just had to share this "flip side" of this 05-S. Actually I may sleep with this coin tonight... but then again, maybe not. I fear the "coin fairy" may steal it and give it to a more worthy recipiant... I hope every one enjoys what weekend you have left. Me, I have to work tomorrow. Until next time, Happy Collecting! The "FINEST" AU-58 I've ever seen!

This coin is absolutely "Amazing" Greetings, I am just sitting here in "awe" over this $10 I got today. For the last hour and a half I have been comparing the Obverse & the Reverse to over 30 different coins on Teletrade, eBay, & Heritage. Also I looked at the few $10's I have pics of here at the CS registry. None of the mint state 61's or 62's I own even come close. This 58 is "hands down" far superior to all of my $10 Libertys. The PCGS grader had to have seen something to give

Coin Show Gold Purchases

Anual Greater Jacksonville Coin Show Greetings Collectors, I just got home a few minutes ago and wanted to share the only two purchases I made at the show. The two coins pictured is the "reverse only", and were two of the nicest coins for the grade that I found today. I was busy with work yesterday and was not able to make it down to the show until today. This was actually the first Saturday of this yearly show I have ever missed. To try and make myself feel a little better, I thought that m

Correcting A Mistake

I should say THANKS W.K.F. Sorry W.K.F. my fingers typed faster than my brain is moving today. I transposed the letters. So to everyone who just read my previous journal entry. Thanks to W.K.F. for his journal entries. Also, you can see a larger image of my 1956 Franklin in my galler, I notice the galler will accept a larger file size than the journals. Making Headway

Franklin Half pic shows I'm getting there. Hi all, Yes, I'm still working on my photos. I am to the point where I was getting some good pictures with my point & shoot digital camera, but am not happy with the detail. Thus, my purchase of a digital SLR. Before I go any further, I want to commend WFK for his just started group of journal entries about photography. I've always felt more heads are better than one, so I've been reading his journal entries in hopes of picking up some tips &a

Morgan Point Loss

WOW, the Morgan's took a hit recently. I noticed when I logged in this morning that my Morgan's lost some points. Then I took a peek at the Top 10 and WOW, did they take a hit. What happened? Did somebody discover a long lost hoard of Morgan Dollars? Well, gotta get those points back. Time to dispatch the wife on a mission. Have a great Memorial Day!!! Collector?s Society members are the best! Many of you know that I collect Britannia?s, the United Kingdom?s version of the Silver American Eagle with a goal to collect the entire series in MS-69 or 70. The biggest problem I have in collecting this series is that Britannia?s in MS-69 are rare and almost unheard of in MS-70. Additionally, the United Kingdom limits the mintage to 100,000 Britannia?s annually, meaning the supply of coins is significantly lower than with ASE?s. Currently, I lack fi

A Couple additional Tips...

For those of you without a tripod or copy stand... Greetings Photographers, I have had several of you write thanking me and looking forward to "round two". Thanks to all! One who wrote telling of a method he has used in the past without the use of a tri pod or copy stand. It actually reminded me of some of my "trial & error" days early on. I had alot of trouble keeping my camera still which now the tripod fixes that. I used 4 NGC 20-coin boxes. For closer shots I would stack them two h

Coin Photography Made Simple (Part One)

Well... here goes... Greetings Collectors, Roughly 7 months ago (actually Oct.17th) I posted a journal titled "I want to buy your help". I had been a CS member for almost 2 years (would have been 2 years that next month in Nov) and I had yet to post a pic with a journal. At the time I had some really crappy pics of my silver eagle collection (they still remain to this day as my thoughts are, once you have seen one MS-69 SE, you've seen them all) but my daughter had pretty much done them and

Lehmann's Park Set

Parks, Parks, Parks Today marked the start of another new set!!! The 2010 clad National Parks set was started!!! Really nifty!! I am looking forward to working on this beast. Added all 5 of the first bunch today!!! Silver proofs came out yesterday, I think, so will add them soon. Cool to work on a set that will go on for a while, and will also be more affordable than some of my other sets. Will be a blast to see all the Parks depicted on quarters!!!! Every one will be different, which

Stars or Plusses?

taking away the collector's role I've been thinking about the new + designation by NGC for a few days. I had an initial knee-jerk response when I saw several of my sets dropping registry points..however I wanted to consider a list of positives and negatives before I jumped the gun and/or made any journal posts about my sentiments..... Let's do some negatives first--and I'm sure others will have different ones I've missed-- 1. Coin costs..all new coins with the + will probably now sell for

Found a nickel!

In a bit of nostalgia, a 20-year-old hole in my coin folder is filled. Yesterday I received in change a rather worn-looking nickel, heavily circulated, its appearance indicative of having been in circulation a long time. I found its date to be 1951. To think, this coin was minted 59 years ago; back when segregation was legal and politicians actually used racist words in campaign speeches; when Poland and Russia were Communist and Germany split into pieces in the aftermath of World War II; and

It's Really Funny And Ironic!

Who would have thought proofs could be easy? Hi all, Yes, I'm still working with my digital cam! I know you probably are all getting sick of reading and looking at my pictures, but tonight I've been experimenting with lights and light angles. The coins I was having the most trouble with before, namely proofs, I'm not having near the troubles now. The only problem I am having is a color shift, and I feel I can find a light and learning to adjust my white balance to take care ot it. OK here'

Working On Photos

...I bought a copy stand. Hi all, On Monday, I bought a copy stand with light fixtures. I think I may have bought more than I need but it does make a difference. One big difference I noticed is the camera is steady as a rock. The big downside is I have to figure out what lights to use. I had been using a small flourescent tube fixture with my point & shoot camera, and had the white balance pretty well figured out. This stand has normal bulb fixtures, I bought some Reveal bulbs for it,

New Quarters

Got my quarters in the registry! Howdy, Just put my America the Beautiful Clad quarters in my set! For a very short time I will be #1! I think this set will be a very nice collection of coins. Maybe it will inspire people to visit the N.P.'s that are minted. Happy collecting to all and see you in the rankings!!! Todd

New slide show option

Best of the best I just spent a very enjoyable time enjoying the new slide show feature in the registry. About all I can say is that this is absolutely the best addition to this site that I have ever seen. Sad to say it just points out how bad my photographic skills are and how bad I need to follow closely our fellow members' offer to teach us (me) how to get good photos. I know it will take time but I promise I will improve.

What a day of loading coins.

What else is there to do on a Saturday in Spring? Somehow I end up working on my coins instead of yard work. With a month and a week away from retirement from my job, and some decisions to make as to what to do next, instead of being proactive and getting my paperwork in, I chose to spend it organizing my collection. So the garden will have to wait for another day to get started. Lucky for me that we have a pretty good growing season, and good soil. So I can make up for all the procrastination
