NGC Journals

May 4 2010

It starts..... So starts the journal entries of yet another lonely numismatist just poking these keys down one at a time trying to find a clever way to shre my thoughts. A few years back I thought turning 40 would be no big deal. Boy was I wrong.....Two more days and I join the "more seasoned" crowd. I've been collecting coins and stuff on and off for the better part of 20 years now. I am starting to see the value and challenge of collecting complete graded sets now. I have finally completed m

Personalizing a Registry Set One Step Further

Dedicating a collection and a Registry effort to someone special really makes it personal .... Last night I added a short little line at the end of my set's desciption to dedicate my particular set to someone very close that I lost last year ....someone who truly shared my interest and love of coins and someone who would be cheering me on to get my set completed....if they were still here . All possible thanks to the unique set of tools NGC has provided each of us to describe and show our regi

I have been wondering about if I should put coins into... I have been wondering about if I should put coins into the one coin per date or the full set. I have collected several coins lately, and wondered which is the better way to go. I have some pretty bad dates, such as AU 58, then I have some average dates such as MS 66, with everything inbetween. My collection isn't spectacular, but I am proud of it. Sooooo, which way to go? Both with the best in the One per Date, or just the one I have no

In search of high grade SBA's

Would you believe a MS67 from a US Mint set? One would think that all the 79'-81' Mint Sets have been searched over and sold and searched over again. It was just by chance I picked a Ebay seller with low Feedback numbers as one that doesn't sell that much or is fairly new at Ebay. I only paid $8.00 plus shipping. As soon as I looked thru my 16x piece, I suspected the 1981D was a MS67. I even thought the 1981S was a MS66. I was half right, the 1981D is a MS67. Just got the results back fr

The Raw Purchases are adding up

I still need 60 coins (30 easy and 30 tough) Hey Friends, I have started a new set of morgans now with 2 nice 10 coin purchases. Trying to buy the high grade easy coins first and then go for MS or lower on the finals. Good picks grabbed a 1894-O MS64 last night for 150. The good part of starting over with my Morgan set is that I decided to venture into all MS dollar sets and will very slowly be adding new sets to my registry. I will get the raw coins graded after I have acquired 100 or more

RE: Kids & the Collector Society

Sportyperson is on to something. I think most of us can agree that the grand and glorious hobby of Numimatics needs young people to become interested in the hobby. When I was growing up (Pre Cable TV, Pre Video Games, ETC.) every 5 and 10 cent store sold coin collecting supplies and every major department store had a coin and stamp section. Those days are long over and to attract the young kids, we need to come up with something that will stimulate interest and foster healthy competition.

FBL's and grading

which is better! in response to WKF and the wisdom he is trying to share with us! LISTEN AND LEARN! Read his Journal and then read it again and learn! WKF, well a few years ago I noticed in a magazine that the coins sold by a very well known dealer seem to be off. Off meaning that the coins in the NGC holders were more money the the exact same ones in the PCGS holder. Yes we are talking about the FBL's halves, that you and I love so much. If you bought a full set of FBL's except the

A very "Handsome Pair" from the 2nd best graders

A "questionable fact" to some but "downright true" when it comes to this series. Greetings Collectors, First off I would like to thank all of you who emailed me with their thoughts on the "possibe" 11-D Indian. I have answered a few of you but having received 24 emails thus far and being the slow typer/pecker I am, I beleive a "blanket" thank you is in order. In our hobby I am sure that the vast majority of you are aware that coins that are graded by PCGS on the average, bring more money a

Kids & the Collector Society

To join the Collector Society, the minimum age is 14, a raging teenager...... To join the Collector Society, the minimum age is 14. By that time your kid has hormones kicked in and is a raging teenager. To get them to do something with you is a miracle, much less to sit down at the computer and/or discuss coins. My question is this; Can we as a society get the age lowered to age 4? 6? or 8? If so, we have several years to get them into working with and/or performing with coin activities,

Questionable Grade

Judge for yourselves, 70 or something less. NGC defines MS or PF-70 as having no post-production imperfections at 5-X magnification. I understand what imperfections at 5-X means, but I have always had a question as to what post-production means. By this definition, it seems that most any coin should be a 70 when it first comes off the dies and that imperfections come in the form of contact marks and hairlines as the coins are bagged and rolled. I also understand that collector coins receive sp

not going to the graders

Error coins - what are the odds? My latest bank circulated roll find - (presumably) a fully split Jefferson nickel planchet. I got the reverse with a D mintmark, and the coin weighs 4.3 grams. The obverse is totally naked. Pretty amazing for only missing 0.7 grams. It's clearly circulated. We're all collectors - can any of us imagine holding that coin and not noticing something awry? And yet every other person who touched that coin for at least the past 46 years spent their $.05 instead

A $10,000 Question???

Should I, or Shouldn't I??? Only God knows for sure...Dam I hate when I have to make a decision such as this...Puts a whole new meaning to "the other side of the coin". Greetings Collectors, Pictured here is a ring I bought off eBay and ironicly it is from the same very large seller of whom I bought the 5 silver eagles from, for a total of less than $150. In my previous post a "Lottery win on eBay", one of those "raw" silver eagles turned out being the "so-called" rare 2008-W with the revers

NOT GENUINE I UNDERSTAND...

HAVE YOU EVER GOTTEN THIS BACK AS A GRADE? I am looking at the "Grades" on line for two 1916 5 kopek coins with the following grades: invoice number 2759098   "QUESTIONABLE AUTHENTICITY" & "AUTHENTICITY UNVERIFIABLE" from those "Expert" graders at NGC. What am I suppose to do with these remarks? They are not grades, they are not "Not Genuine", what do I say to the company that sold them to me? NGC says they can't tell if the coins are real or not, fake or not, gunine or not and I h

A"Lottery" win on eBay

Things like this are very "uncommon" in my life... Greetings Collectors, Understanding there is more to "numismatics" than FBL Franklin halves, I have decided to share with you all something that happened to me in the last couple months. I have shared this story with a few of you so for you guys, forgive me for being redundant. Since my construction business is only doing about $.25 on the dollar from what I have been accustomed to, I decided to start a business on eBay. I buy and sell jew

1829 $2.5 Gold...

Hello: want to sell ungraded Capped Head mintage 3403 Hello: Interested in selling 1829 (mintage 3403) $2.5 Quarter Eagle in likely AU-50 or 55 condition. Understand, I am a new collector going on only two years knowledge. I use a grading book and compared to other coins I own of various grades and determine this would grade out at AU50-55. I feel very strongly. My friend who owns it seems to want to grade it, but I feel perhaps we should sell it as is. Will entertain any offers. Than

Three little "Rarities" I really "Own"

It takes "all kinds" to make a world! Greetings Collectors, I have been reading the journals of late in regards to those who list coins in the registry they do not own. It has to be that those guilty parties are the same ones who would copy off others "test papers" in grade school. It's also just like the guy who has a huge spoiler installed on the rear of his three year old 4 cylinder "Focus". Or like the person next to you at the light with his stereo pumping out enough "base" to spill you

I Had An Awesome Day!!!

free at last... What a day!!!! I got a lot of errands finished this morning, then had a 12:30 appointment with my lawyer to finish up my last debt. We had been quibbling on the amount owed for over 2 months, well, it was paid off today!!!!!!!! Then I did some other banking and post office business, it was a good day here today to do all this, as it has been drizzling and rainy all day and evening. So, after my errands were completed, I decided a rainy day would be a perfect time to drive dow

2c and 3c may be undervalued

Old obsoletes offer value I did not set out to complete my obsolete cent type set so quickly, but the lore of the registry pulled me in. My shield was a raw acquisition about three years ago for about a c-note. It came back MS-63 so I was pleased. I do expect to upgrade this specimen in the near future. My trime set started with a nice, MS64, die clash error type two in a PCGS holder. I was able to pick this one up just slightly over bid (at the time). I just added a very nicely contra

re-entry listing

This was not pointless!!!!Ha. My hats off to Amy Lorenzo once again. Sent some of my proof shield nickels in for star designation review and got four back as such. But when I tried and tried to relist them they would not show up with the star designation. Sent an email to Amy Monday night with all the information and by 8:15 AM the next morning she had it fixed and listed in my set. We as human beings tend to talk a lot more these days about what is bad and overlook people and things that are

I just thought about something from my last post..

New thought on Kamakazy's post. Kamakazy recommended that if you dont post a picture with your registry entry, it shouldnt be added. I responded that the terds would then save the pictures from Ebay and post them. Who in Ebay could we engage to ask about watermarking pictures. For example, if you are selling something and add pictures of your item, Ebay would then watermark the picture with EBAY going across it. That way the terds would not be able to right click and "save picture as". Or Ebay

I will not reveal my source (WHY NOT, EXPOSURE SOMETIMES IS THE CURE), however I have been told that there are a number of farces on this registry. It was brought to my attention after I purchased a coin on EBAY and someone else had it in thier registry (I JUST EXPERIENCED THE SAME SITUATION).
