Making Progress!!!

on many fronts; photos, adding coins, and grading submissions. The last 14 days or so has seen a lot of progress for me on the coin front. As I mentioned in an earlier entry, I bought a digital SLR camera; since that time I've been experimenting with it, reading the manual, and FINALLY I'm starting to get some better pictures. My biggest stumbling blocks have been WHITE BALANCE and light coverage. Well, I feel I'm making a lot of headway on the white balance. Personally, I hate photos with a t

Coin Photography Made Simple (Part Three)

re-ducing the file size of your photos. Greetings Collectors & Photographers, I apologize once again for being tardy in my continued posts of this very tedious art of coin "picture taking". Before I start I want to say that while there are many of you who have their own personal tips on "how they do it", for those of you who are as new to this task as I was last fall, with all due respect, try to ignore, just for the time being, urges to get too fancy too quickly. Again I can only speak

Unavoidable coins...

For some reason, I have to have "her" I recently commented on a new members journal about being a "newbie". I gave him some friendly advice to try and collect something that inspires you and not to go after everything under the sun, even if it as a good price. I have been doing good lately and have decide to only purchase MS 70 and PF 70 UC, specifically Silver coins. One of my purchases was my 1st gold piece, 2006 W 1/10 $5 Eagle, MS 70 (see pic). Then I did something that goes against what I

Coin Shots are GREAT

Keep it up and you will all be online photography specialist. A great HELO to all, I have been quite busy working and not much time to hit the computer. My admiration goes out to those that are sending the great coin shots. I guess about 1 year ago I needed to see everyones coins (since I cuold not afford any), and I will say that the club as a whole has done a wonderful job at perfecting and submitting thier coin pics with thier journals. I do have a few bids out there for some new coins next

"BRITANNIA"

Returns back from NGC. The Great Britain series of BRITANNIA Silver 2 Pounds coins are currently my favorite. Unlike the American Silver Eagle, the design on the Britannia changes each year. I wonder if the design change, is why it's hard to get great grades in both Proof and MS? One on the things I like about the Proof Britannia it is a limited series. Now if NGC would provide a slot for the smaller demontaions. A 20Pence, a 50Pence and a 1Pound are also put out in Proof. To see old

Toning Question ?

1998 American Eagle I have this 1998 American Eagle coin that I have had for sometime put away in a drawer, and when I got it out the other day to consider sending it in to be graded just to add to the collection I noticed that it was really toned, and as I am somewhat a Nubie, my question is does this affect the grading or is this prefered? I know is probably a matter of taste, but just looking for some info on toned coins if anyone out there has any input it would be appreciated. Thanks

A Couple of Recent Weird Happenings....

2-first time events.... I am still active in my collecting, for those wondering where IU've gotten to...just working on my Barber Half raw set and keeping my eyes open for any additions to my Walker Mid-date set (really nice 1936-S CBC, by the way). Nothing has really come up for auction that has jumped out at me so I am being patient. I did find a 1945-S MS66 that was really nice so now my entire 20 coin set from 1941 through 1947 is now MS66 or MS67..... Okay, enough of the boring stuff...

When do you release a coin from your Registry inventory?

Once again..... I tried to add my latest acquisition to my Registry set, and received the dreaded "registered to another user" message. The last time this happened it took about a month to get the coin released. I bought this coin through a Heritage auction. I recently dropped to #11 on the Walking Liberty list; I'll never get to #1 (or even #8) but I'm trying to get back into the Top Ten. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. GETTING BETTER!

Had surgey last Wednesday to repair the hole in my neck where I've had a Trek for two years! Starting to feel a lot better, able to work on my coin collection more. I've purchased a lot of raw coins this past two years and have started to get them graded. Made myself promise not to start any new series until I've completed what I started. Here a poor picture of my latest purchase: EL CORTEZ CASINO, Morgan Dollar. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can

My Own Photography Experiments

Absolutely nothing takes the place of good pictures on the front end. First, I want to give kudos to W.K.F. on all his hard work in documenting his photographic experiences. Then I want to thank Bammer for the tip that will yield sharper, neater, more consistent coinage images in my registry sets. I have spent countless hours trying to take perfect pictures of my coins, getting somewhat better along the way, but never entirely satisfied. One of the things that annoy me most about my picture

...more coins and more photos. This past couple of weeks have been really good for me. I just made my 2010 IRA contribution (which is always nice), I received 5 more coins in the mail today (which is even nicer) and I'm making progress on the photo front. First off, the coins! I added 3 silver commems to my commemorative set, Two were 69 Ultra Cameos (Edison and Smithsonian) and 1 gorgeous 70 Ultra Cameo (Disabled Veterans). Plus, I added a MS64RB 1920 1 Centavo to my Mexican 1 Centavo set,

As I try to learn that collecting is a journey not a destination

Another "Problem Coin" Here is another "problem coin". I think that the picture is worth a thousand details or adjectives. If I had an unlimited budget I would buy all mint state and ultra cameo coins. But if reality was not an issue I would just go back in time and get one from Mr Rittenhouse at the mint hot off the screw press. Since neither of these is going to happen I like my problem coins and have some fun wondering about just where they have been and what they have done to get in to

Coin Photography Made Simple (Part Two)

Cropping/Editing your Photo Greetings Collectors, Sorry for the delay in getting to part two. I wanted to get this done Friday night, as I am sure most of you are very busy during the week, and the weekends probably give you a little more free time. As I continue this series I plan on doing one post per week and would like to have it done by Fri. eve. Saturday at the very latest. Some of you have your own brand of software you like to use when editing your photos so bear in mind that these

1877 Proof Set Almost Done - 20 Cent Piece Added Today

It Took Me Four Years to Find This One! My 1877 early proof set is made up of cameo proofs graded 63 or 64. I have been looking for a 20 cent piece that fits this criteria for almost 4 years. One PF 63 Cameo finally came available and I had to have it. Who knows when another might come along. So I bid strong and got it. The irony is that, after waiting 4 years for one to show up, 2 more came to auction within the next 3 months after I bought this. One was graded 64 cameo and the other 63

Coins of Summer

Coins, Kids, and the Lack of Funds Wow, it seems like it has been forever since the last time I?ve had a quiet Saturday morning to play with my coins. There is only a week left to school, baseball season is over, and I have extricated my two youngest sons from my ex-wife in Louisiana and they are here for the summer. I even managed to get a decent night of sleep last night. Money or rather the lack of money has brought most of my collecting activities to a painfully grinding crawl. My regis

2010 OBWs

More than two years after the Great Recession's onset, I've gotten my first unopened OBW from my local bank branch. The Great Recession supposedly didn't hit my nook of the Midwest that hard, but newer change has been hard to come by via my bank. I've enjoyed searching mostly pennies and nickels, but on a lark I asked for ten rolls of dimes on my last withdrawal. I just finished searching my third roll - all 2010D! At least half would rate FT. Some typically scarred fields can be very cl

Another Coin for My 1856 Mint Set

Also fits my Liberty Half Eagle set I recently purchased this 1856 AU55 NGC Liberty Half Eagle for less than half of the value of an AU58 version of the coin. So I decided it was worth the buy. Overall, a decent coin given its age and that it has circulated. Larger images are in the sets.

1987 P Jefferson Nickel MS67 NGC MS 67 6FS - TOP POP!!

You just never know when it will happen! Here is another example of fishing for one and finding another instead. I bid on two Mint sets on Ebay a few weeks back and really was just interested in the 1981 Mint Set for the SBA's. The other set was a 1987. I went okay.....some more change for the bank later... I was disappointed with the 1981 set and I glanced at the 1987 and you just know when you find a six full step nickel and having it be a MS67 is a miracle. The observe does have a Proo

1948-S Jefferson Nickel PCGS MS66 FS

Obtained a 1948-S Jefferson Nickel PCGS MS66 FS from David Lawrence Rare Coins for $184 and 59 registry points. The auction was won using a bid of $200. David Lawrence Rare Coin Auctions 7158: Thursday - Internet Auction # 483 This coin was part of the Monticello Collection offered by DLRC.
