Would "YOU" like to learn to take Coin Photos to post here?

If the want/need is out there, I will do a short series of journals to help out... Greetings Collectors, This Fall will be a year ago when I posted a "plea" that I needed help in learning how to take "basic" coin photos. Ones that were good enough to post here at the Collectors Society in journals and also to have photos of my many coin sets that I am so proud of. I am fairly certain there are those of you that post journals from time to time that would love to share a picture with the rest

A "Gorgeous" site to behold...

My "faith" in NGC may be somewhat restored...a little... Greeting Collectors, I just came back from the Post Office a little while ago with my last 4-coin submission from NGC. In a previous post I kinda let them have it with "both barrels" for a very bad job they did on some pre-1908 Gold. While I still think the results on those 4 coins were as wrong as wrong can be, I feel somewhat better getting these 4 "modern" gold coins back from them today. My construction business has been sufferin

California Gold Miner Tokens - You Gotta Love Them !!

These small California gold tokens made by Herman Brand in 1883 and 1884 are great to collect.... Howdy Again- Just like I said in my last journal, some California Gold tokens like the "Arms of California" pieces have not been restruck or copied in modern times. The "miner" tokens made by Herman Brand of San Francisco in 1883 and 1884 are pretty unique. Brand was trying to get the US Secret Service off his case for making "counterfeit" gold coins, so he changed his designs completely

"Arms of California" Gold Tokens

Not all California Gold Tokens are created equal... Back Again: California Gold Tokens are not all the same. I like collecting the pieces called "Arms of California" tokens because the obverse looks like the California State Seal. Well, sort of. There is a seated figure of Minerva (although some of these tokens make her look like the Wicked Witch of the West). There are usually some mountains in the background, with ocean, boats, and usually a miner in the near background. There is

California Gold Tokens: The Good; The Bad; and The Ugly

California Gold "Tokens" are tough to figure out. It's kind of like panning for gold and knowing what to keep in the pan and what to dump out. The big nuggets are pretty obvious, but the smaller pieces are sometimes difficult to see... Howdy: Been collecting California Gold Tokens for about seven years or so. They are pretty cool but you have got to know a little bit about them before you reach into your wallet (or purse). There are a lot of replicas floating around; just look at eb

Rarity X two in "Triplicate"

I really need to get a life...other than Franklin halves & silver bars. Greetings Collectors, There is nothing like working in the yard all afternoon and then coming in and winning a coin you have been searching for years for. Lately I have had a couple of good sources for FBL Franklins and actually the ones pictured here are from a source I bought around a dozen coins from over a 10 day period. All were auction buys and I have never seen such an abundance of ultra high quality NGC FBL c

Re: When do you release a coin sold

So when is the correct time to release a coin from your registry? From "Just Coins" journal: So when is the correct time to release a coin from your registry? You should release the coin when you no longer own the coin. The cases cited in the original journal post: 1. Once I sold a coin on eBay and the new owner decided to list it in his registry right away. He didnt even pay for it! My response: You still own the coin until you receive payment. 2. Another time a guy who bought the

"Brown" or "Red & Brown"???

Where is the "cut off"? Greetings Collectors, Years ago while my parents and I were cleaning out the attic of my grandparents house to ready it for sale a few years after my "Me Ma" died we came across an old trunk that was filled with lots of old, mainly worthless items. But in the bottom was an old cigar box and inside was found a small "mini hoard" of coins. My great grandfather was a small time coin collector and I do beleive some of these items were his because the dates would have been

every week we should list the worst.... I think every week we all should list a photo of the worst coin we have seen graded. Sorta of like the oops the graders made a mistake with this one! So I will start with a coin I saw on Heritage auction for a Roosevelt dime. This one is a MS67FB coin, dated 1998-D. The same auction shows several others that are MS67's, but this one some how slipped through the process. Tell me what you think and let's have some fun showing some really bad coins!

Conditionally Back...

It's been a while. I managed to make myself seriously busy the last few months. I obtained the B.S. in Chemical Engineering but I won't be starting work on a Ph.D until the Fall. I decided that I needed something to keep me occupied and I almost did the job too well. I've gotten to continue my part-time job for the University (at a 7% raise since I'm no longer a student) and just for fun I decided to take art classes at the local community college just for fun. It looks like I'll be able to

A Crying Shame....

but an old story I was talking with a patient of mine about a month ago ( who has since been discharged so no ethical issues involved) and the subject of coin collecting came up. As has happened to me dozens of times, he mentioned that he had a bunch of old coins. I told him that once he was no longer in my care that I'd love to take a look and let him know what he had. So he pops into the office a few days ago with a shoebox. We sat and talked a bit and then I perused the contents..... As

Pair of "Late Night" eBay Snags...

I have a hard time passing up a good deal on a coin or a silver bar... Greetings Collectors, I just picked up another example of a scarce Full Bell Line Franklin and while I already owned this same coin in 64, this very brilliant "blast white" P-mint was for sale rather than auction and I was able to get a great deal on it. The 1960-P is the easiest P-mint from the 60's to aquire but when they reach MS-65 and coupled with bold bell lines, common is a term that is way more than estranged. In

To grade....or Not to grade

A "VAM" hard decision to make. I recently received a box full of Morgan Dollars from an estate sale I went to. I list some of the coins I did not need for sets on Ebay, which did not sell. The highest bidder just missed the reserve price, but contacted me to find out the price. This particular coin is a 1921 P VAM 3T. (Thanks to the high bidder for identifying for me) I am not very familiar with the whole VAM system but I looked up the coin of VAM World and found this information: 3T IV 1 ?

Too Good to be True

The things kids do.... This one is toooo good not to pass on. I was just looking through my Indian Head Cents, and remembered a funny story. I work out of town alot and have never had a lock on my home office door. Didn't think I needed on right? WRONG! I had just been to the big Money Show in Houston and had my wares scattered all over my desk when my wife calls me from the grocery store. She says "I just got a funny looking penny like the ones you are always showing me...(my wife has no appr

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

My day at the Central States Numismatic Society convention. I had a wonderful time at the Central States Numismatic Society convention last Friday. I arrived with a 1908 Austrian 100 Corona gold coin in an old NCS holder to cross over to a purple holder and 2 coins with which to barter. The bartering coins were an uncirculated details 1906-D Half Eagle and a MS-69 1989 Russian Ballet 25 ruble palladium coin. The moment I got there, the first place I went was NGC?s table. "Talk About RARE"...

The number of modern coins rarer than this one can be counted on just a few fingers of "one hand". Greetings Collectors, Modern coins are not a passion of mine. Silver Eagles in mint state & proof once were but no longer. I don't dislike them. It's just that none of them can be considered rare or even "scarce" for that matter. It's pretty much the same with 97% of the gold issues as well. But the one modern issue that has some truely "very rare" pieces is in the Platinum Eagle series.

Sure wish I looked this good at "My Age"

A "Cameo Proof" from my birth year... Greetings Collectors, I was just fumbling through a few coins when I came across this one. I actually own two examples of this date, and both are 67-Cameos by NGC. Now this is a series that those "in the know" would much rather have a PCGS coin because it's widely known they are "more strict" when it comes to grading cameos in general. If I were to send this exact coin to PCGS it's doubtful it would "cross". (For those of you that don't know, that means
