ASE

Another Idea I personally don't bother with getting MS ASE coins graded as many of them have contact marks. I only concentrate my effort to the Proof coins. The problem in my opinion lies with businesses and the way they are package by the mint. When jammed in rolls and boxes the contact marks are practically unavoidable. If the mint were to adopt an idea such as the plastic holders like Australian coins are shipped in then I think many more would deserve the 70 label.

My replacement NGC MS-70 ASE is poorly graded AGAIN - far from the MS70 it claims to be!!

I returned my 25th Ann. MS70 ASE due to a huge gouge on an MS70 grade and what I received, although better, was overgraded again. I am sure at one time or another you have all seen that NGC MS70 graded American Silver Eagle with those obvious contact marks. Those annoying small shiny spots where the coins have obviously struck each other, probably while in the rolls. Unlike the true perfection seen on an actual coin that deserves the 70 grade, these coins are far from being perfect. If we c

Steve's Coin Collection

Just Started collecting: Own a 1955 DDO#4/DDR#4 ANACS PF-67 Red Proof Lincoln Penny; 1891 $10 Gold Eagle PCGS MS-62 I'm VERY new to Nurismatics, but have learned alot from experts in the field (as well as not-so-expert in the field). I plan on continuing to collect hard to find coins at the lowest price possible and either turn them around for a profit or keep them for enjoyment.

Ebay... again....

Ebay.. trials and tribulations Why is it that sellers will list a high value coin for low prices and then ignore the buyer when they win. I recently won (and paid for) a beautiful coin on ebay for way below book value. I had tried to contact the seller several times asking if everything was ok and never recieved a response. I know that I just sucked the egg on this deal. Im writing this journal in response to all those who swear by Ebay. Let me tell you, Ive been burnt on Ebay more times than

REGISTRY-belongs to someone else!

When I buy from a major dealer-usually I don't have a problem! It seems that when I buy from a small dealer, or individual I have this problem more often than I use to! It's dishearting when you receive your coin, try to put it in my Registry & it belongs to someone else! It almost brings tears! I guess it's the time we live in, peoople don't care about any body but SELF!

ANA Show

What an experience! I recently attended the ANA Money Show in Ft Worth. First, I have to say that it was great having it held in my backyard. I have not seen any attendance reports yet. Hopefully, they will be included in my next publication. I am hoping that the attendance will be high enough that the ANA will come back soon. My first thought was awe at the sheer size of the convention hall. I have been to a few coin shows in my short time of collecting, but nothing of this magnitude.

My Lincoln Rolls From Southern Coin

Still Haven't Arrived I called today about the status of my Lincoln B.U rolls I ordered last month. They said that a couple of rolls were not at the facility, and they were supposed to be mailed out as soon as they found some. They said the order has been sitting since the 23rd. They will mail what they have, and back-order the rest. Finally, some coins coming my way.

The Raw Purchases

Didn't think I would do it again. Friends, Yea I went out on a limb last night and purchased around 40 Morgan & Peace Dollars. I am in hopes they will grade at least MS62 but I will have a better opinion when I receive them. The graded coins are getting pretty high bids so I have decided to try one shot at some raw coins to keep me busy for a while with the grading companies. I do have a set waiting for me that is 108 Morgans but do not have the finances yet. Maybe another month and the

Lincoln Shield Cents

Thank You McDonald's I took my daughter to the local McDonald's today and when i received my change, I had 4 very bright shiny cents in my hand. I eagerly turned them over and found I had scored my first, in circulation, examples of the 2010 cent. They look great, much better than the Lincoln Memorial and certainly attractive on a small coin like the cent. Let's see, I will be 101 when they change the reverse again for the 250th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, or will the Cent, in any form,

Collecting Interests

Sometimes, the only constant is change. I have found during my few years of collecting, that starting a collection doesnt always mean that you will finish that colletion first. Sometimes, the obstacle is finances, while other times, it is finding something new that you are interested in. That is one of the reasons I love this hobby so much. There are so many great coins out there that you can be in love with one type today and another type the next. I started off working on Lincolns in MS

State Quarters Are Pretty Easy To Find I also collect the Lincolns, we plan to eventually have as many complete (our version of complete) sets as possible in the next few years. The State quarters were pretty easy to get in proof condition, as we buy multiple proof sets each year. We have sent in a couple 1999 proof sets to get slabbed, and most came back PF 69 U.C. A few 70's so far. We have sent in a few other proof sets for certification, and have gotten back a few 70's, but nothing under a

More Conders

Need to send these in to NGC Just picked up a couple more Conders for the Registry set. I'll have to send them in for grading as they are raw. This was a nice little pick up from Tony Fein at VCOINS.

Details, Details, Details

There sure was a lot of cleaning back then. I recently submitted three commemorative half dollars for grading. All three had been purchased at least 25 years ago when 3rd party grading didn't exist and Photograde was the best resource on the market. I believe all three were purchased by mail order although it has been too long to have a true recollection. The coins were an Oregon Trail, a Sesquicentennial, and a Grant. All three came back UNC Details/Improperly Cleaned. I just sent, this

Upgraded

Sometimes it is worth it to buy coins raw. As I looked through my collection for some coins to send into NGC for grading I decided to send in some raw gold... I sent in a 1913 Quarter Eagle, A type three $1 dollar, A 1913 Half Eagle and two 1oz Buffalo. After I carefully put each coin into 2x2 flips then wrapped them safe for their trip, I knew I would have to wait to find out how the coins grade. Four of the five coins graded how I expected them to and one really caught me sleeping. I

What are the odds

PLEASE UNREGISTER those coins when sold I purchased and received 3 really nice coins today. (2) PF70UC Kennedy's and a really nice MS65 Morgan and wouldn't you know, when I tried to register them I got the equivalent of the Micosoft's "blue screen of death" on ALL three !!!!! Yes, registered to someone else. I mean I've hit it before on one (very rarely) but on three What are the odds of that happening? When I asked the sellers they responded that they hadn't registered them. They bough

A "Pocket Coin"

for a raw set In my journals I usually talk about my Walking Liberty collecting, sometimes I talk about my High Seas sailing ship themed set/s, and since I finished my Mercury dimes..not so much on them anymore. I don't seem to write about some of my "sideline" collections very much. One of these collections is Barber Halves in F-VF quality. I collect these raw, although one or two have been crackouts when the price is about even to that of a raw coin. I'm not super picky with these. I bel

Breaking Up is Hard to Do!

To sell, not to sell, or trade is one of the toughest decisions a collector can make. For me, decisions about buying coins are relatively easy, since there are few coins I see that I do not want. However, financial constraints more often than not take those decisions out of my hands. The real decision comes when I have the resources, and I have to decide on whether a coin fits into my collection, and whether it is worth what the seller is asking. Furthermore, it is always exciting to add new c

The Money Show

Jon returns from the Money Show, Gold $3 in hand! This is my first journal entry, but we'll jump into the middle. After months of planning, researching, and saving up, I went in looking for a $3 towards my twelve coin basic gold type set, as it and the type 2 $1 were the only ones missing. I went in with a budget close to $3k, plus a trade-in coin in hand in case I found something just a little more than I could get. The challenge before me was principally one of whether to get an AU better

Quarter Eagle Collecting

The coin for everyone. The quarter eagle is in many ways a great coin for any collector. I only wish I had started to collect them sooner. Both the Liberty Head and the Indian head $2.50 gold coins are beautifully designed. Both coins have many ways to collect them; date sets, short sets and mint mark sets. Both coins have affordable and expensive options for collecting them. I started to buy raw Indian head and liberty head quarter eagles by chance. I was in a coin shop and they had a few

Submission Hopes

Or how I hope to close out my Winged Liberty Head (WLH) date set. I sent 8 coins to NGC yesterday for grading. Three of them were WLH dimes intended to complete my year set. The three dimes, 1918 (AU), 1921 (VG), and 1925 (AU) have been very elusive at a decent price and condition on both Teletrade and Ebay. They are either overpriced or overbid, everytime one appears. So, I decided to go raw and take my chances with the fine NGC grading staff. The other coins I submitted yesterday are:
