Looking for info

Any experience with cross over with NES coins? Good evening Everyone, I recently picked up a coin graded by NES and will send it to NGC for re-grading. It was a 1931S AU58. I don't think it will get a 58 from NGC, but you never know. at any rate it didn't cost a bunch, so it will work out. If anyone has had previous cross-overs with NES I would appreciate any input. Thanks and Be Well, Todd

1984 NGC MS68 Double Die Obverse Lincoln Memorial

Nice NGC close up picture-Population of 41 Hi everyone. After I registered this coin and posted pictures that the seller provided NGC posted this close up picture into my set that they had on file for this coin. Nice close details of the doubling of the ears. Just added a few more coins in the last couple of days. As always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting

Caesar's Commem Gold

Gold, Gold, Gold!!!! Here we go again!!! After much prodding from Caesar, we are embarking (heh heh) on another gold qwest. Our commem golds are complete in NGC PF-70, and we are down to one needed coin in $5.00 gold eagles. Working on $10 gold eagles, but will not go into the higher denominations due to cost. Way more gold Buffalos out there than expected, and old gold way out of our budget. What other gold to collect Caesar asked? Well, I said, lets do the commem gold in MS-70 and see

Nothing can replace the sentimental value of stolen set. Except, I can afford better second time around.

My first set began when I was 8 yrs. old and grew substantially and I was proud of what I had and one day the unthinkable, after 24 yrs. of collecting my set was stolen. I still remember walking down the old dirt road in Oklahoma while visiting my aunt. I found what said was 1 cent but I had never seen anything like it and at 8 yrs. of age I was able to learn about the indian head penny. That day a collector was born. I started looking at everything. Soon I had wheats and silver quarters,

A Life Long Coin Collecting Journey and a Washington Quarter Registry Set

Most of us have reasons why we collect what we do ...and love what we collect ....in this Journal I share mine .... In the summer of 1965 my father added a couple lines to a letter that my Mom had written to me while I spent a few weeks at my cousin Jimmy's farm on Maryland's beautiful Eastern Shore . He wrote " when you get back home ..I have something I want to give you " . Of course as an 8 year old boy my mind raced with visions of candy canes and sugar plums and I couldn't wait to get hom

Buying & Selling in Baltimore

Buying comes easier than selling... The latest Whitman Expo in Baltimore is now "history". As usual, I took Thursday and Friday off work to attend the show. Well, actually I did go to work on Thursday, since the show didn't open to the public until 2PM, and there wasn't anything calling for my money in the B&M auction to get me to spend the morning viewing lots. Thus, the company got some free labor. Ever since the Goldbergs' sale of the Naftzger middle date large cents in February 2009,

My big Morgans will leave tomarrow.

AND THE NEW SET BEGINS Friends, The last 5 nice Morgans in my set will go tomorrow or Tuesday to Steve Twitty of P-Q Dollars. The only high grade morgan left belongs to Audrop (Dan),after over 8 weeks we are still waiting on the mail for that purchase. 3 to 5 more weeks and he can get another cashiers check and we will try it again. I have used different resources and think I have figured out a way to build a full set without breaking the bank this time. And of course the economy didn't hel

Franklin Halves Upgraded

Thanks to EbaY. I have upgraded my Franklin Half set to all MS coins, I just added the NGC 1949 MS62 FBL, NGC 1950 MS64, PCGS 1950-D MS64 FBL, and NGC 1952-D MS64 FBL. All were purchased on EBAY so are yet to actually arrive. It will be very nice to replace the AUs with these new MSs. As is my normal policy, I tried very hard to keep all the coins NGC but ended up buying one PCGS coin. That is pretty much in keeping with my ratio of about 2.5 to 1 NGC to PCGS. Woo Hoo, my Hana is going to

We Need More Mediocre Galleries!

Check out my nice close-up of MS 64 Memorial cent This is only my second year working with slabs. Grading above MS 60 remains a challenge for me. Grading manuals don't seem to help, either. The ANA manual is fantastic for below MS 60, but then pictures and descriptions in the UNC range are all vague ... and identical. I don't know about you all, but I have a hard time comparing MS 64 cents with silver dollars. Identical descriptions in grading books don't mean identical grades in slabs,

Bulk grading vs. single coin grading?

Do NGC and PCGS grade the bulk coins differently from the single coins sent in for grading? Do NGC and PCGS grade the bulk coins differently from the single coins sent in for grading? I know for a fact that you can send into PCGS a large number of the same date and or mint mark coins, and they give you a special label and grade the coins in bulk. But I am not sure about the NGC rules for bulk submissions. Maybe another member will comment on that here. Have you ever looked at the specia

1984 NGC MS68 Double Die Obverse Lincoln Memorial Finally, ownership has been transferred on my latest Lincoln Memorial purchase. Here it is. A very nice example of this particular Lincoln error date coin. I was able to pick this one up for $400 below list. This temporarily places me in the top 10 for 1959-Present Lincoln Memorial sets. That was one of goals for this year was to finish with this set in the top 10 at the end of the year. I have a couple of sleeper coins that I will be kee

One of the (few) frustrations as a collector..

Buyers ? So I go through the agony of finally deciding to part with some precious sovereigns Keen buyer and I meet and talk a lot. There is a deal set to go down. I wait a couple of months, for him to sell some stuff and gather the funds.. including a month while the guy is away. As we nail out the final details, I tell him that PayPal transactions can be 1% for personal transfers, and would save (him) on fees Next day buyer says things are too complicated and he spent the money on somethi

1872 and 1880 proof sets continues to grow

The building of two classic proof sets takes two steps forward... This coin story started in 1/18/2010 (see below). Fast forward to 3/6/2010...Ding! Dong! Goes the door bell. "Letter Carrier with a package that need a signature". In the middle of some chores... Can't stop to open the package. One hour later... Finished with the chores. Trying to open package...Ouch! Cut myself with the box cutter (saw it coming...not smart). Must be the high/rush or something...like a birthday present. Kid in

I Can Dream About You

Not Dan Hartman's Hit Hi everyone. I just recently purchased the newest coin for my Lincoln Memorial Set. And yes, you guessed it, I got the dreaded message saying the coin is already registered and the previous owner has 1 week and then the coin will be transferred. Now normally I would patiently wait, but in this case I am so excited I can't stand it. The Lincoln I bought is not the most expensive in my set nor does it have the lowest population but it does have the highest point value of

How the Fires of Collecting Rekindled

I owe all of my friends here a real journal A quick apology to everyone who likes to read my entries. I broke one of my standards and subverted NGC's journal intent with my last post--it won't happen again. So in response-- a special journal with a little about me and how I got back into collecting coins. Like many, my fascination with coin collecting started early in life with the "thumbuster" albums. Collecting pennies and nickels from change and if I had a little money from lawn mowing or

Off to the show!

Local coin show today! Today I'm off to the Port St Lucie Community Center, for a Stamp, Coin and Postcard show. I found the listing for the show in the events calendar of my latest issue of Coin World Special Edition. Coin shows are few and far between now a days. Especially in our humble little burg. The show is being put on by the Port St Lucie Stamp Club. But I'm hoping (hopeful ?) that there's enough coin dealers there, so I can score the BIG FIND! Wish me luck. At least it looks like

I should of never asked a simple question.....

Here is the skinny (facts) Didn't know when I asked a simple question about E-Bay it was gonna put a knot in some peoples shorts but wow seems I hit a nerve with a few professional E-Bayers.   Folks, here is the skinny and the links to back up what I say. It doesn't cost $4.95 to ship a coin, period. Sure you can pay that for the flat rate box, but "if" we want to practice good business sense, then why not ship it first class in a bubble padded manilla envelope. I switched to this last y

RE: My Year End Review For 2009

Result's of The NCS/NGC Submission of Icelandic Proofs 1958 to 1962 First i would like to share my lose of my mother on January 31 of 2010 from cancer. We had a beautiful funeral for her with so many people attending that i didn't have a clue to who some of them were. I felt the need to share this in my journal because it was my mother who first sparked a interest in coins by giving me a old silver standing liberty quarter back in the mid-60's. She was born in Iceland on December 11, 1934 and

Foreign Coin Luck

What's up with that I have finally narrowed my colleting tastes down to just a few sets and have received my lastest submissions to NGC back. It seems that all of my US coins I submit seem to do real well. For example my last submission resulted in four out of five coins reaching 70UC while my ASE received a 69. My Australian Kookaburras and Koalas however not one has yet to reach the 70 plateau. I have decided I'm pefectly happy with the Kookaburra collection where it's at even with two of

Journal Posting 101

I may not make any friends, but I feel this needs to be said. According to NGC, when they judge the journal posts for their annual awards, they judge them according to the following criteria: 1. Writing talent 2. Creativity 3. Enthusiasm 4. Numismatic Knowledge 5. ?..and most importantly, the sharing of a personal sense of the collecting journey. Of lately it seems that the journal postings have veered off from what NGC has intended for their use. The intention of NGC as described
