Thrill of the hunt
Many things that an average coin collector receives that a corporation and deep pockets can't.
That thrill going thru rolls of coins you just got from your local bank. That anticipation of finding that unique error or that near perfect strike. I recently purchased a original bank wrapped 1954 S quarter roll. That excitement knowing you were the first one ever to lay eyes on those coins in over 55 years. The awe and wonder of those coins of the luster and shine. Findin
I did very well
Hello everyone!
Just a note of thanks to friends and foes alike. Here's to the people that made my sets what they are. Some won an award......some didn't. I will try to maintain the standards of collecting and improve in 2010.
Thanks to Sam,Todd,Don,and Rene for input and support. Dean too....sorry!
Thanks to NGC for doing this, and recognizing Society members for their achievements last year.
My certificates made me realize how lucky I really am to be a part of this.
A dream come true
Ever since I started the hobby at age ten, I wanted to own a killer MS or PF Barber Half. I have finally purchased the one of my dreams. I will add it to the registry in a few days.
Happy as a Clam!!!
Congrats to all who competed in the Registry Awards!!! Some really awesome sets out there in NGC land!!! Way to go, folks!!!
While I didn't win any big awards, my certificates came today for the sets I had completed. Really made my day! Work has been brutal this last month, and I finally had something to smile about today!!!!
Thanks to NGC for making this guy really happy!!!!!!! Thanks to all of you for keeping this fun!!!!!

Really sharp 1987
Greetings all;
Today I received my 1987 Kennedy PF70UC which is an upgrade coin for my set. It is really a nice addition.
Am looking forward to adding more "upgrades" as I can in the coming days.....

out of 21 coins sent in, 9 top pops!
Well after writing on how I try and protect my coins when I want to send them in for grading, I had to say.....
Out of 21 coins sent in to PCGS, mostly 2009 satin finish coins, I scored 9 top or ties population coins.
The population broke down like this,
1 of 52 coins, 09-d Presidency cent SMS, SF69
1 of 86 coins, 09-d dime SMS with full bands, SF69FB
1 of 204 coins, 09-p nickel SMS with full steps, SF68FS, note no coins are yet graded in 69!

The man w/ the gold makes the rules!
Well collectors,as much as i agree with the wealthy influence in the competitive sets as being an up hill struggle- like mt everest, see murphy's law- THE MAN WITH THE GOLD MAKES THE RULES.I also am a little guy with a small collecting budget. The reality is the grading companies wealth comes from the big dealers and wealthy collectors with hundreds if not thousands of submissions every year from each.I look at the point structure for modern coins compared to
Do you have your eye on a special coin
Ok, everybody admit it. You want to get just ONE "Special" coin with your return money, right !!!! Don't know if you can pull the trigger and get it. Well I am in the same boat. It would be an upgrade coin (if I can find it)
I must admit it would be hard NOT to attempt to get it if I came across it.
If it happens, I will let everyone know.
Anyway, good luck to all who will attempt to get at least one coin with their return money.

and a glimpse into my busy life....
Greetings folks!!
Well, it has been a little while since my last post (I have been starting my journals out this way frequently) and I hope you have all been well and are all finding the coins you want and need.
I pre-ordered 2 MS 70 ER 2010 SAE's a couple of months back and I finally got those coins last Saturday. Looks like only about 5500 of these exist in ER and in MS 70, about 3000 less than the 2009's. This should be a worthy coin to have. The
my 3 submission's....
In one of the coin publications I read an article about a coin dealer who sends in coins to be graded. He talked about using gloves, white cotton I think, so you would not get the oils from your fingers on the edge of the coins.
He also wore a face mask, the plain white one's, so the air that you breath, when it leaves your body, has a certain level of moisture in it. This air will fall onto the surface of your coin and can ruin the surface.

Postal and more
In response to those upset about big money do like I do, yet another little guy, I collect for me to see what I can get by the luck of the draw. Check my Kookaburra collection "Coo Coo for Kookaburras" for example. These are the ones I received from the Perth Mint directly not a coin dealer.
My good news of the day is that the USPS did in fact find both of my packages after curing the cranialrectumitis problem they determined they weren't really lost just behind schedule. Th
a 1933-d and a 1914-s Lincoln penny coins
I sent in a 1933-d SEGS MS-65 red coin to be graded by PCGS. I was sure I had a chance at a MS-66. When I am going to buy a coin for my 1909 to 1933 set, I look at as many online auction houses for recent sales and prices the coin sold for. My coin I thought had a small chance at the MS-66 grade, when I looked at the others I see online.
I also sent in a 1914-s Lincoln cent to be graded. While the coin had a wonderful full strike and barely a mark i
...I agree.
I'm in agreement with 9sec931x. Having just started (within the last 6 weeks) mint sets in tribute to my parents, I would appreciate a NO GOLD option. I have always said in my journals that I am on a limited coin budget. While right now I have 2 pieces of gold, I would prefer the no gold option. I guess this is my 2 cents worth. Attached is a 1921D Morgan, 1921 being my mom's birth year.
For us without deep pockets!
I really love the idea of collectors starting tribute sets for their parents/grandparents/children etc. birth years. My request is this could NGC please allow us to start Mint sets/proof sets no gold. Like they do for type sets. It would give us collectors without the silver spoon in our mouths. At least a fighting chance of completing them some day.My parents were born in the 20's and my grandparents were born in the 1880's + 90's. Tough enough as it is without ad
Finially somewhere where creative thinking counts!
I have been reading all the complaints about dealers and deep pockets on the competive side of the isle, and I want to tell you, I too have competative sets, but the most fun I get out of this society is that it gives me a chance to show off important events in history through coins. I am puting together this year, a set of the last coins minted by the Russian Imperial Mints from 1916 - 1917. The Russian revolution affected the destiny of ma
...and an update.
If you have been following the continuing saga of my registry sets, you've probably noticed I put the full set of Morgans back. I just couldn't do it, the one per year set, and leave out the Philadelphia issues. If a rule were made that we could only collect one series of coins, the Morgans would be mine. I know there are prettier coins (Walking Liberty halves and the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles), but to me, the Morgans are right up there too. Besides, whenever I look at one,
A corporation does not get to the top by being HONEST
Friends, Yep I too have seen the light, being a carpenter and not having any work last year my set crashed. However the admiration I have for my Morgan Dollars keeps a small log in the fire for a full set that someday will be complete.
If the Society talked NGC into splitting up Dealers sets and Collectors sets do you think the big dealers or fancy corporations would be honest and not set up a dummy account? They would put their sets in
Best PF69 set out there. You'll see once I get my pictures up.
It was late spring of 2009 that I bought my first coin. Then within a few more weeks I picked up 3 more. After that I became an Ebay junkie in my search for these. Along the way I mistakenly bought a couple of MS-69s ,PF-70 and a 1993, ICG MS-69. Can't show the ICG or enter it as NGC doesn't recognize that company. Getting back to the NGC ASEs, I ended up getting a deal on the 2005, 3 coin 25th Anniversary set. It was only a few mo
I have my grades
Separate shipping meant I should have been given my grades on 2 submissions. Lisa kindly gave them to me and will ship those coins back to me soon

As much as I sometimes hate to admit it, collectors with deep pockets are a necessary part of the registry.
I have read all the recent postings on the issue of dealers and persons with deep pockets, and I understand where they are coming from. However, I feel that people with more money to spend have an integral and necessary part in the registry. I?m not sure what advantage a dealer has in maintaining a registry, unless he or she is a collector also. The title dealer by its very nature sugges
I found the picture of the third Conder token.
I found the picture of the third Conder token as I mentioned in my last journal that it was lost. See my other journals to see the whole story.
Doing it for fun and relaxation
Of late, there seems to be a lot of discussion on the nature of competition in collecting registry sets. Bear in mind I am incredibly competitive and live by the credo that if you are not keeping score, it?s only practice. But I also recognize the reality of life. There is no way, I as a small time collector, will ever compete with the power collectors of the world. I collect coins for fun and relaxation. And as strange as this may sound, even to me, it does not
