What Do You Do about those Must Have Coins in Your Collection?

Two coins I absolutely had to have at any price. What do you do when you have been hunting for a coin for over a year, and it finally comes up for sale on E-Bay? Does that coin become a ?must win? that you are willing to pay almost anything to acquire? This situation presented itself to me twice in the last month and in both cases, I paid whatever it took to acquire the coins. On the surface this may seem like lunacy, but when the coins are rarely available for sale, and fit perfectly into my

January in Review

A very good month!! Hello Everybody, I just wanted to update everyone on what went on with my collection this month. One of the first things I did was split my modern commemorative set into 2 seperate sets. One is Proof and MS half dollars and the other is Proof and MS Silver Dollars. This month I purchased raw the 1986 50c Statue of Liberty and the 1982 50c Washington commemoratives. I have had some luck getting the 70s grade for 50c comms in the past. So when I get a few more I will send

searching circulated Memorial bank rolls

no profitmaking via NGC grades, but decent BU and variety finds For Christmas 2008, my father-in-law gave my toddler a whiskey jar he'd filled in the 1980's with pennies from his spare change. Well, that reawakened the coin collector in me - two months later, I joined NGC and began submitting some of the pennies. (My daughter's enjoying the action. She wants EVERY hole in her penny albums filled regardless of date, and she's excited about going to the bank to start a savings account with a

Report on the 2010 Mint State Silver Eagles

I have processed 5000 coins After processing 5000 Mint State coins my finding are as follows. I recommend you pre buy as many MS70 at a presale price. I have only found 4 MS70s per 1000 coins. I have never seen so much junk in my life coming from the West Point Mint before. Normal numbers should be 30 to 60 MS70 per thousand. Not in any of my lots. It looks with my early finding that MS70s will fall in to the high price range. I think well above $150 range. Nomal is $85 to $90. If you have fou

My Newest Acquisition- My First Classic Head Gold

An 1836 -script 8 Quarter Eagle Today I recieved the below coin. It's an 1836 -script 8 variety graded by NGC XF45. It's my first ever Classic Head Gold coin. Under the loupe, it is rather marked up. But for XF45, this is not unacceptable. The reverse is better than the obverse. 547,986 minted and of that number, it is unknown how many were -script 8 vs. Block 8. Of course, the images in the gallery are far better than the one below.

My Presidential Beauty

An Error Coin I haven't seen before I have a Thomas Jefferson Proof Dollar with an extra wisp of hair on his left side, if you are facing the coin. It appears to be an extra hair-like scrap of metal that protrudes from the area where his left ear is, and curls around to form an almost perfect one-half of a figure '8' lying sideways. I will try to post a pic, but have not figured out how to edit the ones I have yet, hence the detailed description. The dollar is still encased in the complete pro

A Nice Start to 2010

Or how to collect coins on a budget From a money standpoint January is always a thin month. Between a teacher?s salary and the cost of Christmas, there is usually very little money left for anything other than rent, bills and groceries in January. This year was no different. My darling wife cheerfully allows me to indulge in collecting coins with just a few rules. 1) Do not spend money we do not have, 2) do not dip into our summer savings and 3) do not use any credit cards. Given the fact that

1968 S PF 69* CAMEO Nickel

I got this one for a song! Sometimes you just get lucky on Ebay. There was very little action on this 1968 S PF 69* CAMEO Nickel. The seller never even mentioned it was a Star Designated but it clearly was in the picture. So I crossed my fingers and bid on it hoping it was a Star. When it was all over with..I purchased it for a mere $20. I am real surprised though that it doesn't have more registry points. Only 5 exists in that grade with a Star. Does anyone know what the true value might

NGC MS67 1977D Lincoln Memorial

And a touching tribute Hi everyone. Here is a picture of my latest addition to my Lincoln Memorial Set. Point value is not that great towards my registry set but with a low population of 9 at this level by NGC and none graded higher hopefully that will change over time. Also I would like to take a moment and say that a recent post from Bammer paying tribute to his parents was very touching and appropriate. I think there are a lot of us collectors out there who can thank our parents for ins

A Hard Journal Entry To Write

I learned some hard lessons. This is a hard journal entry for me to write, but it does need to be written. Before I go any further I must state something right up front. I'm not writing this for any sympathy or condolences, but to record some feelings, and a hard lesson learned. I have one brother, who also collects coins. They're mostly raw, for example, he's putting together a raw Walking Liberty set (as most of you know, the early years of this set can be quite pricy in higher grades). He

The Outlaws Live

The Outlaws grow by one Hi collectors,I just wanted to share photos of my recent purchase that will be added to my small but growing [ OUTLAWS OF THE SOCIETY ] signature set. This is a 1913 copper ger.3M BAV. PN-16 PF 63. One problem though, the cert.# doesnt match up to the coin description and it has no color designation.I guess it is going back into NGC to correct these two things and possibly get regraded as I and the previous owner think it is undergraded. 2010 Off to a Good Start.

Patience, patience, patience; but I really want it now! Just returned from my local coin shop and picked up a couple of additions for my Mint Sets but that is just part of the story. I had visited the website before I went in and had a particular coin in mind to buy, however, it was going to stretch my already over-stretched budget so I opted for choices two and three instead. It never fails, I settle for quick additions rather than setting the money aside until I have enough for the one 'sp

My First Multi-coin Holder submission

Multi-coin holders are a great way to present coin sets that have sentimental meaning. Several years ago, I thought to buy proof sets to mark my children?s birth years. As a result, I purchased a 1984 set corresponding to my daughter?s birth year and a 1988 set for my son. As far as cost, I do not remember how much I spent for the sets, but it could not have been more than $15.00 each. However, to get them into the NGC registry, I would need to submit them for grading. When I started submit

My coin for this Month

My first "Star Coin" Each month I try to build my sets by adding one nice piece. I found this Morgan and knew it would fit my collection perfectly. I am usually a fan of blast white silver coins but the tone on this 1886 Morgan caught my eye. It is graded by NGC MS 64* Let me know what you think.

The Auctions are doing great for the sellers

I am glad not to be buying right now Friends, As you know I sent most of my set to Heritage. The auctions did well except for 6 high dollar coins ( one of which I already sold and the other 5 PQ Dollars is looking to purchase). I don't need the 5 high value coins in my set since I have downgraded the set and they just don't fit anymore. I will probably try to trade for a bunch of lower grade coins to fill the new holes in the set. I was surprised on the amount of coins that sold for mor

How Do We Get The Best Photos?

I don't know the way to shoot my coins to proudly display them. I am displaying two fo my brother's Double Eagles because he would like to sell them. We tried to photograph them for excellant display, but they came out lousy. I tried to shoot them with the highest resolution possible on my digital camera, then compress (or decompress?) them to 120K to upload, but that didn't work. The pics came out unusable. I tried to shoot for e-mail, and that didn't work. They came out fuzzy. So... How do I

National Money Show

March 25 - 27th I was very excited to read in one of my coin publications that the ANA will be holding a show in Ft. Worth, TX. Living in Dallas, this will be an easy show for me to get to. I can't wait until a listing of exhibits and seminars is put up on the ANA's website! Happy Collecting! Marcus
