Raw Coins

...a journal entry I said I would write. Finally, I have some time to sit down and write an entry. I've been busy scanning my graded and raw currency to send to a the software company whose program I use to keep track of my coins & currency. I'm also finishing up some photos of my coins, but I'm still having some issues with my proof Sac dollars. Oh well, guess I'm learning something every day. In an earlier entry, I said I was going to write a couple of entries about my raw coins and se

Finished A Set !!

finally broke down and filled the last slot.. I remember reading some advice in a book once. It was written by a highly respected, giant of our hobby. He wrote in his book, "buy the key dates of a series you're building first. They are the coins that will continue to gain or hold in price, while the easier dates rise much slower or often go up AND down." At the time I thought this was a no-brainer. I was sure that I would have figured that bit of logic out on my own, after all, it doesn't ta

What?? Another Buying BINGE That's All

BUYING,BUYING, the only way to stop is not to look!!!!!!! Dear Journal: I lucked into a couple of pretty good buys this weekend past. I picked up a 2010 Presidential proof set NGC PF70 took pictures wrote descriptions and added to my registry set. Now I?m back tied for first and holding down the last slot on page # 1. They cost me $1 for every 28 points. I also got a MS66 first day of issue 2010p Millard Fillmore for less than $8 that?s a whopping 48 points per dollar.

A Penny and My Thoughts

Finding a small numismatic treasure in pocket change is where the real thrill of collecting is found....or is it the story it would tell if it could.... I found a 1917 Lincoln Cent in pocket change today and I have to confess my first thoughts were...dang!!....I wish I could tell without a glass if it was one of those fabled Double Die cents of the same year , unlikely as that might be !! However my thoughts quickly changed as I considered this particular coin's journey and the 93 years it too

This year goal is to go from the 900's to the 700's

I am ranked in the 900's and i want to see if I can make it to the 700's I just started with the First Spouse and this will help me get to where I want to get (if the price is right) And I am mostly focusing on what I have in finances. I was trying to acquire I multiple coins set. Which would be the easiest way but that fell threw So I am out looking for another Multi NGC/PCGS set to help get to my goal the easy way. It is a challenge since I am somewhat new to this. And learning everyday whic

The Red Chinese Continue to Flood Our Coin Markets

With no civil rights and basic freedoms the Red Chinese sell in our numismatic community with impunity. This is not the first time and I am sad to say it will probably not be the last time I write to you about the Red Chinese. How can NGC allow Red Chinese coins into the Registry, knowing the deplorable human rights and outright murder that occurred in obtaining the very gold and silver to strike the coins, with the euphuistic name of, "Pandas". Why does NGC feel that this is a non-issue?

An Army of Eyes Looking for Coins

Kids will do the strangest things At last, I have the weekend mornings to myself. I think it?s been about a month since I have been able to sit down on both Saturday and Sunday morning and enjoy some quiet time. Well, I haven?t added much to my registry sets this month, another thin month for financial resources. I did add a 2009D LP4 to MS66 Lincoln Cent set. For the life of me I sure cannot see why people are driving the price of this one coin into the $15-$20 range. At that price, it is

Duke in the Hizzy!

Finally! Well, I finally received my first Washington D.C. Duke Ellington Quarter in change today, 2009-D. I was at the mall getting change for a kiddy ride, put my dollar in the machine, and got my prize. I have now officially collected four of the 6 quarter from circulation. I have yet to find Northern Marianas or Samoa in circulation. Soon, hopefully soon I will have the whole set. I shudder to think how long it will take to get both Philadelphia and Denver examples of each. Here in C

Putting UHR back in my set.. but what grade and type ?

I don't think it will be MS70PL I hope to have MS70 I just sent 3 coins to NGC. I believe one is a dead set MS70 The other two have dark fields, one I think should make PL for sure ! looking forward to it. The other is a maybe.. but having read the post on the forum from NGC about these coins, I guess my other one is one of the "looks like PL but isn't quite" It does have some reflectivity both sides. The other one is just better I guess its better to be 70, ALMOST PL, than getting a

A New Found Love

Affordable bits of history and a premise. As most of you probably know I'm trying to collect Mint Sets for the birth years of my ancestors. A daunting project to say the least, but I was elated to discover that many of the coins I need are readily available if I lower my expectations a tad. Case in point, I bought this 1829 half for less than $500 and it is a beaut! Sure it would be nice to have a MS-63 or so but with a wishlist still hovering around 500 coins, I would run out of moola way

Tattoo Tale

Or How I Managed to Turn A Visit to A Tattoo Studio into Coins. Every year, around the time of my birthday, I get another tattoo. Sometimes I use the available flash, sometimes I use my own design. This year, I had my own design and had gone to two separate studios and gotten quotes of 180 and 200. For that reason, I had accumulated 300 dollars to easily cover the tattoo and a 20 dollar tip. On a lark, I went to a third studio in downtown Oceanside and got a quote of 120. WOW, I couldn't b

Waiting for my Lincoln rolls from Southern Coin Investments

My first order with them I am waiting for my first order of some Lincoln B.U Cent rolls to come from Southern Coin Investments. I was just curious if anyone out there has dealt with them, and if they had a favorable/not favorable experience? I plan to put together at least 20 more Lincoln cent sets, and wonder if this is a good company to deal with. They seem to be 'pro' customer service. I called them about the postage on the amount of rolls on the first order, as the order form is not very s

Bulk vs Single

I do try. I try and shy away from bulk graded coins. My reasoning is not just the grade and quality factors but it also has to do with prices. Bulk submissions are done by dealers. (shocking huh) Dealers are rightfully out to make money and they tend to price their items higher than individual investors that submit single coins.

Bulk grading vs. single coin grading?

Another try at this..... I sent out a 2009 SMS nickel to PCGS and got a SP68 grade on it. Top population at the time I received it. I wanted to see if a coin sent in one at a time for grading would grade differently than a bulk submission coin(s) sent in for grading at the same company. So I bought 4 additional coins from PCGS in the same grade, SP68 but all the coins I bought online were with the Satin Finish label, which means the coins were sent in under a bulk submission. Now I have 5 c

A Good Coin at a Great Price!

If you settle for Proof 69, you can get our latest commemorative for a great price! Today I received a NGC PFUC-69, 2010-W Disabled Veterans Commemorative Dollar in the mail that I bought from a dealer for $50.00 postage paid. At $50.00, the cost was much less than I could expect to pay had I bought the coin from the mint and sent it to NGC. Let me explain, to buy the coin from the mint will cost you $44.90 with postage. Then to have the coin graded will cost you $12.50 for a total of $57.40.

Poorly Graded Coins. What Next????

A new service to add value to CAC coins Dear Journal: I am going to start a new company that is going to affix a little red oval label to your CAC labeled coins to verify that I agree that CAC agrees with the agency that certified the coin. The label will have the letters SITYS on it, which stands for See I Told You SO sound ridiculous WELL IT IS!!!!!! When someone sends in a bulk order to be graded, say 200 coins, they usually get to specify that they don?t want anything under a certain

Response to Poorly graded coins

Quality Control starts with every Submitter!!! I, too, agree that there are far too many modern coins with First Day Issue that should not have been graded that well. Most dealers that send in bulk to NGC & PCGS never see the coins until they come back graded and even then never look at them let alone inspect the grade given. I have, on more than one occassion, returned a coin to a dealer because it does not meet the grading standards. I need to be proud of the coins I possess and knowi

I beleive both NGC and PCGS both offer a warranty on their grading service. The time has come for everyone out there to grab a 5x magnification device (as used by the grading companies)and inspect all our coins. Everyone that owns a less than perfect 70 or a 69 that shouldn't come close. We band together and collect on the warranty only this will bring about the necessary change. The following was my response to someone who wrote me complaining about a 69 graded coin that "literally looked l

Just received a 25th anniversary label ASE MS70 (VERY DISSAPOINTING)!!!

Just wrote a controversial journal comparing NGC to PCGS a couple days ago. Today I received an MS70 Silver Eagle should be an MS68 at best. See for yourself I have always respected NGC although my preference has tilted towards PCGS as of late. I figured I would add the 2010 25th anniversary ASE to my complete eagles set, as in all eagles it is far from complete and my MS ASE set. You can imagine the sour taste left in my mouth when my son who has just recently started to show an interest i

U.S. Regular Series Coins - One Man's Opinion. I was thinking about this on the train ride home today: 10. Sacagawea Dollar (just a really sweet portrait of Mom and Baby) 9. Jefferson Nickel (but that reverse is awful) 8. U.S. Trade Dollar (Seated Liberty with more Gravitas) 7 Walking Liberty Half (Could have easily been in the top 3) 6. Lincoln Cent - Pre 1959 (The Best Presidential Portrait) 5. Flowing Hair Dollar (Simple but still strong) 4. Buffalo Nickel (the perfect

Recent Purchases and Other Musings

Cool coins that enhance my collection! By limiting my coin collection to type collecting, themes, select series, and upgrades, I have found purchasing and selling coins to be systematic and focused. Conscience of my collecting goals, I made several purchases over the last couple of weeks. With one of my purchases I upgraded a 1913 Netherlands Queen Wilhelmina 10 Gulden gold coin from MS-63 to MS-64. Graded coins in this series are scarce, therefore even a meager step in my quest for a MS-65 or
