Numismatic Potpourri

A number of collecting irons in my fire. Greetings everyone, I pray that summer is going well for you as you plug away at your collecting goals. For me the summer of 2010 is a decidedly slower one than 2009. For the fun of it, I applied several filters to my collecting spreadsheet to discover a few eye-opening statistics. From May 1, 2009 to August 15, 2009, I bought a whopping 36 coins. During the same period this year, I bought 6 coins spending 42% less than last year. Sticking with my 2010

A nice copper upgrade from Boston

And I "saved" enough for a second nice coin! I had my eye on several coins in Heritage's recently completed auction in Boston. I had put low internet proxy bids on them to facilitate monitoring them via the My Bids feature of their website. And "low" is a relative term here, meaning that I didn't expect any of them to have any chance of winning. But they totaled well into 5 figures - far more than I can afford. Anyway, as the auction approached, I decided what my priorities would be, and ent

Surprise!

Won....lost....won I checked my e-mail this afternoon and had a big surprise waiting. I had placed several low-ball bids in a recent Heritage auction, confident that all would be outbid either during the Internet bidding or the "Live" phase. Sure enough, I started receiving "outbid" notices. By the end of the Internet bidding, I had the high bid on only two coins. The "Live" auction (several hundred lots) went well into the night, and I signed off before my two lots came up. I checked th

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH???

The "path" I have taken in my collections/sets needs to be re-thought... Greetings Collectors, I have watched a great deal of movies in my life and have some personal favorites. I remember "quotes" by the different actors as many of these stand out in my mind and I have used/borrowed them on many occasions. I have used several in my posts here at the Collectors Society. A few that I remember are ones that I use most often. In the movie "Cool Hand Luke" with Paul Newman, has a classic quote m

Coins on a $50 a Month Budget

Taking bottom fishing to a new level My budget for buying graded coins is $50 a month. During the summer, June through August, it is $0. I blew the budget this summer and bought three graded coins all of them PF70UC. I spent less then $50 total including shipping, handling and transaction fees. (Let?s face it going 3 months without adding to my collection is pure torture!) I add a 2008S Clad PF70U DC Quarter, a 2008S Clad PF70UC Roosevelt Dime, and a 2007S Clad PF70UC Kennedy Half to my collec

Franklin Half Set Goals, Final Grading Results

and a dilemma on the 1953S Franklin. Finally, my last batch of coins are coming home. Mixed results on the 2 coins of mine. Well I should admit on my final 5 coin submission, 2 were mine (a 1918 Buffalo Nickel and an 1883CC Morgan) and 3 were my brother's. I told him I was curious on one of his coins, as to grade, and would split the cost with him so I could meet the 5 coin minimum on the economy grading tier. So the mixed results on mine were this. My nickel was purchased raw as an AU piece

TO "SLAB" OR NOT TO "SLAB"?

Is sending in "raw recruits" a feasible, economic alternative, to purchasing "slabbed dates"??? Greetings Collectors, I have been watching as I am sure most of you have as well, the price of the "metals" slowly inching higher. This of course, due to the fact that our economy, like the rest of the world, continues to weaken, even with all the massive spending. This is, as I have said before, a "double edged sword". If you are selling, this is a good thing. (the rising price of gold & silv

Bits & Pieces

Late as usual. Some new additions to the collection. I'm firming up the criteria for the collection. I had intended to make this a weekly entry, but as usual I've already missed a week. Typical of me as my blog went the same way. However, since I'll be on this site more often then maybe just maybe I'll be able to do better this time. I've added some new coins during the past two weeks and actually reached the top ten for one year (1957). However, this scatter shot method I've been using h

Over Extending

Sacagawea Dollars I am always worried about overextending myself and my collection. I am now debating on whether or not to get the Sacagawea dollars. The big pro is that it is not an expensive set and in PF69, I could be up to date for around $150 dollars. At that point, it would just be a matter of updating every year. The big con is that it would be another set that I am actively working. This would be in addition to the PF 70 Presidential Dollars, PF69 State Quarters and PF69 Kennedy H

Taking Good Photos

Does'nt anybody use a scanner?? All this talk of exposures and tripods and what not. Too complicated.... All the coins in my collection were scanned into the various sets. I've used a HP 4200C flat bed scanner for a long time. It's a no-brainer, you just lay the coin on the bed. Push a button or two and presto a great photo comes out. Perfectly exposed, no shaking hands, nothing. It also will scan at up to 3200DPI. Which is better than any digital camera I'm aware of today. I usually scan @ 40

ENJOYNG THAT WHICH I ALREADY OWN...

Medical expenses taking a priority over new purchases "Newps" Greetings Collectors, I have had to temporarily suspend purchases of additional coins for all of my much "needing & wanting" sets. I have really been trying as of late, to fill holes in my 3-4 mint sets I have been concentrating on, that being the 1853, 1892, the 1901 and the last being the 1923. I have been successful in filling some holes in all four but after reflecting back on the grade of the pieces added, I have thought

Taking Pictures

I can't STAND to take pictures of my coins... at least till now. I think most of the collectors here have taken pics of their coins. Do you use a full-sized or a desktop tripod? Ever tried to hold the camera by hand? It's a PAIN. The tripods are clumsy (maybe it's me). My hand isn't that steady. The equipment's limitations make my pictures turn out lousy. I use a lamp on an adjustable arm to search coins. I recently found a magnifying lens with the same arm. The arm allows me to place the l

JUST A PHOTO WITH NO JOURNAL...

I'm pretty much OK with everything, and for once, have little to say. Miracle??, I doubt it. Just a little common sense for a change... Greetings Collectors, I finally got to the post office before they closed at 5 and picked up the last package I have been expecting. In this package was this really nice, "1st year of issue" Barber quarter and my 1960-D Franklin from Teletrade. I love the "old holder" AU-50 Barber and the FBL-ms-65 half. I will add pics of both to their respective places thi

How Lucky I Am

About Uncirculated--but only almost. Finally posted complete competitive Double Eagle Type 1 and 2 sets that I've collected over past two years. How lucky I am to literally own a golden history that only special Americans left their touch, those who suffered a Civil War that has maintained a Union that we enjoy from later dyes and their issues. Time For A New Set of Goals

My annual collecting cycle starts on Labor Day As summer winds down, the excitement of once again being solvent has elevated my anticipation of my annual collecting cycle. Summers are spent living on budgeted savings. There is only enough money to get by and acquiring coins is put on the back burner in favor of the mortgage, bills and food. In fact, I very often sell the extra coins I get during the year to help the budget. This year has been particularly good for selling coins. My bottom fish

"MY TWO CENTS" cont

I've been reading my COIN WORLD this past week! Then it hit me! The Collection Manager reads "You'll now be able to organize your entire collection, monitor purchases and sales, establish goals and more". In other works forget the "Old Registry" and start learning the "NEW ONE". I still don't understand the "NEW" but I'll learn! Here's my newest purchase! Is It Just Me???

Can't make it work right! ARRGH I worked for 2 hours this morning, updating my raw & graded Lincoln cent custom set. When I try to view it from the publics viewpoint. It says I have 67 items and 31 images, all good so far. However.... When I click on the set itself only the graded coins and the coins on my want list show up.(no raw coins or images showup) Which is barely half of the listed 67 items and 31 images??? Anybody else have this problem? OR IS IT JUST ME!

THERE'S NO JOY LIKE THIS JOY!!!

Bringing some of my "babies" home for "weekend visitation" is a "Joy" only exceeded by... possibly the birth of another "baby"...then another, and of course yet another... and another and so on and so on...The Bible refers to babies as "Happiness is the man with a "quiver full" as in many babies. Just don't feel he (God) would be happy with me using this quote in reference to coins. Sorry... Greetings Collectors, Today was the one day I was not home when the mailman came by. Evidently the

Final Chapter of "Well This Is New"

Predictable outcome you might say Greetings once again all; Well much has transpired since my last post. I did file a formal complaint as I stated. After that, the individual who used "my coin" cert. number in his listing wrote and threatened to sue me for slander. Honest to God I kid you not. His message went on to state how he had won all these numerous lawsuits etc. Oh it gets better... So I talked to E-Bay for the second time last night and the lady from E-bay said she would expe

Collecting With A 13 Year Old

Summer magic through the eyes of youth It has been a while since I posted a journal entry. My two youngest sons spent the summer (two months) with me so needless to say the summer has been wild. Both, unfortunately, have returned to my ex a 1000 miles away, literally. Now there is just silence in the house and my time is once again mine. Having very little disposable income during the summer months slows my collecting down but does not stop it. In fact, my youngest son and I were able to make
