THOSE "STOPPER" COINS WHEN BUILDING SETS

Every set has at least one or two... My 4 mint sets have a dozen or better... Greetings Collectors, I have cut way back on mt coin purchases and during that time I have had more time to dwell on scarcity, rarity & the costs associated in those "harder to acquire" pieces. I know that every set has a few of these stoppers but having been trying to build a few mint sets, every single one of these has the "stoppers" to beat all "stoppers". I have these 4 sets that are the most important to m

My first journal in ages. MELBOURNE CUP COINS ?

Should I slab ! I feel I must.. I'm thinking I'll send my beautiful 150th Running of the Melbourne Cup gold plated 50c sets in for grading. 12 coins total yes 6 full sets. These are hot, 5000 mintage and I expect them to go up plenty more yet. Why not, I mean how gorgeous are they !! see below. They are PROOFS with an obverse the same as the proof set, Queen Elizabeth II So here's the plan.. send all 12 coins and ask for PF70 matched sets only. So if 5 of one coin grade 70 but only 4 of th

The low mintage odyssey. Way back in the seventies when I first started to really collect coins I had a subscription to Coins Magizine. In one of the issues there was a column about a really interesting way to collect coins. The author said he looked for issues with mintages of 500,000 or less. The catch was the coin had to be priced less than $100.00. The object was to come up with a coin that was rarer than a 1909 S VDB cent at a fraction of the cost. I'm attempting to do this and its a

200 YEAR OLD LARGE CENT WITH XF- DETAILS

1810 over 9 Classic Head My first coin of any significance. I acquired it in 1963-64. Greetings Collectors, This is a coin my "Uncle Bill" gave me when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. He worked for the railroad and he found this coin laying between the two rails outside the little south east Georgia town of Kingsland. It was by far the "oldest coin I owned then and it's still my oldest coin I own now. I can't tell you how many times I have held this coin in my hand and wondered how, why and w

Completed a 1950-1964 Washington Quarter Proof Set :)

Finished a bit ahead of schedule and WAY under budget . Just a note to myself that I managed to complete a 1950-64 Washington Quarter Proof Registry Set with the addition today of the final coin ....a 1950 . I still need to add a final picture of the last coin and sometime this fall I will be re-slabbing the 1952 for very possibly a higher grade and definately an attribution for the SUPER BIRD variety on the slab which it presently lacks . Upgraded one more

It was a very good year.... Greetings all; I am fortunate to be able to upgrade another one of my Kennedy's. This time around it was the 1983. This was a very good month for me as I added or upgraded a number of coins. Now that the funds are dry, (choke, choke) It's off to work we go...... NUMISMATIC HEAVEN ON EARTH...

There's nothing like having an entire afternoon & evening "wrapped up" in coins! Greetings Collectors, I took the day off to have surgery on my left arm today having a nasty place on my left forearm removed and then decided to go by the bank and get my silver eagle rolls just to make sure what I had written on paper, via inventory, was indeed reality. And I'm happy to say it is. All that I am technically waiting on is #4 1996 silver eagles to arrive and it will be official. When I was

The Point System

How accurate is the point system? A recent post by Kerry about the low point value received for a coin got me wondering. After all my last post was about developing a price/point ratio for purchases. I decided that a little basic statistics work was required. Using the data available (admittedly as small and limited sample of MS66 quarters from 1949-1960) the results were encouraging. Sample Size: 38 Mean: 254 Median: 234 Standard Deviation: 78 (rounded to a whole number) 95% Con

2010 P Sacagawea Great Law of Peace NGC MS67

There is an error on the reverse but what kind is it? I had a couple fo these with errors graded and both came back as MS67 from NGC. I did not indicate they were error coins though. Now I know the grade, I need some advice from all you experts. Is this a gradeable error by NGC and what type is it? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Coin Collecting at It's Very Best !!!

Finding a treasure where none was seen before is definately the ultimate thrill for this collector !!! I was sorting and packing away some slabbed proof quarters earlier this evening when something told me to stop and examine one 1952 Proof Quarter in an old PCGS green holder . I flipped the holder over and yanked out my 10x glass and to my utter bewilderment and joy there sat as plain as day a SUPERBIRD variety waiting to be discovered !!!! Granted the coin which IS currently registered in

LOOK AT GOLD & SILVER GO & GO!

It's definitely NOT "too late" to get on board! in coins or scrap! Greetings Collectors, Gold punched through $1300 "inter day" this last Friday but with almost a $12 gain today, it's well above that mark. (just a while ago I checked and gold was $1310.30 & silver was $21.77) I predict that gold at under $1200 may never be seen again. Those of you that have some, buying now, is "NOT" an unwise move. Those of you that don't have any but want some, wait and you may get a correction around

It May Be Time to Get Out of the Golden Rat Race

I think I lost the desire to keep up with the First Spouse gold coins. Greetings all, many of you are aware that I have been collecting First Spouse gold coins. In the past, I have opined in my journals on strategies for collecting the entire series in PF-70 condition. The fact that these coins are gold, and they sprang out of a passion for my ?Inspirational Ladies? custom set has kept me buying these expensive coins. Although I did not buy these coins as an investment or hedge against inflati

A 14-YEAR GOAL FINALLY COMPLETED, AT LAST!

Today I received the "final" piece to the 25 part puzzle. Greetings Collectors, Today I finally was able to hold in my hand, the last roll needed to be able to always put together #20 complete sets of United States Silver Eagles. This is a quest that began in 1996. This was the year I bought my very first "mint roll" with the green top of what may be America's most widely collected silver coin. Of course this last part of the statement may be one that could be argued against. The Morgan Doll

Business Practices for Collecting?

The question is are basic business practices applicable to the casual collector. Late again, but I was out of town the week before last and didn't really have anything to say last week. Since I didn't have internet access while I was gone, it gave me time to think about my collection. Was I being smart about my coin purchases? Was I following basic business practices? I can truthfully say that I couldn't say yes to either question. When I got back I turned to my database only to find it

It Doesn?t Take a Rocket Scientist

To figure out that you can?t get a real MS70 for $2.00 As a rule, I stick to NGC or PCGS when buying graded coins. I prefer NGC for appearance but it is the coin on which I ultimately make my decision. For recently minted coins, I almost exclusively buy NGC. After having looked at several coins and compared them side by side, I cannot see the difference between a NGC and PCGS PF70UC/DCam and I cannot, in my mind, justify the premium that PCGS seems to command. I am somewhat dubious of all othe

My Highest Graded GSA Soft Pack - MS66 Monster!

These were sold as circulated coins by the government in the 70's for $3 each. I just made my first MS66 Morgan Silver Dollar in the GSA Soft Pack holder! How sweet it is! This 1883-O is a rather common date in the GSA Soft Packs, but this is the only 66 for the date. I bought this ungraded and thought it had a shot at 66. It is very clean with a touch of rim toning. As of this writing, the GSA soft pack population report shows this new MS66 as 1 of only 3 graded MS66 for all dates (1878

Strange coin dont know what it is.

Anyone know what this might be? I have a very strange coin in my collection. It's a 1957, and its legend says : confoederatio helvetica. The portrait is of Liberty (assumed) right-facing.Inscribed in her tiara is LIBERTAS On the reverse is a wreath of what appears to be grapes? (im not sure here) but the wreath is held together with a bow at the bottom, and the wreath completely surrounds the coins face value of 5. Can anyone tell me what this coin is, and which country of origin it be

THE MOROTORIUM HAS ENDED...

Very In-expensive coins are very hard to pass on... Greetings Collectors, With several items being watched/followed on eBay, this is a coin that was up for auction that no-one made the starting bid on. I actually would have done so but it ended while I was out of town and away from the computer. I emailed the seller and asked if the coin was still available and if so I would offer "X". It took sometime for him to get back to me and after writing him for the second time, he responded in the a
